D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

And the team in 4th spot gets two first place votes, while the teams in second and third get none. ....That is a clear reflection of the warp factor. :)

Well in the real poll the 5th place team got 1 first place and 2nd, 3rd, 4th got none. I'm surpised to see Gustavus so low, but then again...I'm not.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Wait! One of Elmira's D and one F had upper body injuries and one D had the flu, plus their bus driver had the trots. They outshoot Middlebury 29-15, 15-3 in the 3rd, give them a 5 on 3 in OT, win in a shootout and then go on to win the tourney, collect the MVP hardware and the Panthers move from 5th to 3rd in the polls and finish two spots ahead of EC?

Am I too late?

Edit: retains 3rd, my mistake.
...pure garbage hockey with that there 5 on 3, 5-4...most "foul-to-the-finish" display I have ever seen...you can't teach that...it must be in the water...

Ya that "delay of game" and phantom "interference" call were sure mean spirited.

Gez Phil, That's all you can come up with?

..give the old man a break...that was my first game...I have not honed my observational skills to mid-season form like you...but I know that when you cover the puck in the slot with your glove and you dropped to do it then it is pretty blatant. For the interference, perhaps you couldn't see below the dashers from your side or else that Mardi Gras feather boa that passes for a scarf occluded your view, but you could clearly hear the thud as an Elmira captain pinned a puck-less Panther to the boards, so mean-spirited, no, but unsportsmanlike, yes, since they were intentional fouls designed to delay and defuse with zero recourse (it sets a dangerous precedent).

There was plenty of rough physical play that I enjoyed and the Panthers certainly didn't leave a lot of Eagles standing around for rebounds on the crease, which caused a rabbit punch or two from the frustrated purples and golds, but that is understandable....I just don't think the last 15 seconds of the overtime showed well. Plattsburg played a physical game the following day and got so frustrated that they took a major and a few undisciplined penalties that Coach Houle actually apologized for in the third, and a lot of gals on all teams took a few dents this weekend as they found spirited and talented opponents.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Phil. Your first game? I believe that!
Covering the puck in the crease by a skater results in an automatic penalty shot and not a delay of game.
Rabbit punches? I think we all missed those.
The scarf that refer to is actually Laura Hurds scarf (I am assuming you have heard of her) which has been passed through the Elmira family to wear at each game. Nice comment!
Watch a few more games Phil then come back to us with all you've learned !

slot, honey bunny, not crease is what I said --
scarf --- is there only one? seems like between amherst and elmira there was a plethora ---
check the vid for rabbit punch (on both sides)...still good game --- I learn nothing, that's why I keep coming back here

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

The only covering of the puck was out by the blue line which is when EC drew the penalty.
Nice back pedal on the scarf and I ain't your honey.
Now back to your thesauras........we'll work with you on the hockey thing but you gotta keep it real ok?

As I remember it the play happened at about the hash marks and she took a slapper from the point in the gut which folded her up on the ice which in turn produced about three spears in a matter of seconds trying to dislodge the puck.

.....anyway I never take much stock in the penalty calling of officiating crews when they miss blatant offsides and icings to the point where thay have to drop the puck at center. Ya just never know what your going to get. Twas a good spirited match all the same as both teams were able to overcome the incompetancy of the referring.

Can`t open your link though Phil, when I click on it, it keeps sending me over to the Zapruder film link...

As a long time Panther backer I'm just happy to see that the physical play that they discovered late last year has continued. For a number of years the small speedy Panthers led the nation in fewest penalties, and were routinely pushed around by the bigger and badder girls from Platty and Elmira. Then, when Amherst got big they got pushed around by them as well. Now they have figured out how to push back and all of a sudden the purple and gold faithful are upset? I don't recall anyone affiliated with Elmira apologizing for any of Jamie Huntley's scud missile attacks on opposing goalies.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

to those who were at the tournament last wknd, im curious who you think was the best squad on the ice? We all know that any given game can go to either team on the ice, (at times) regardless of skill level. Was the top 10 showdown what it seemingly promised in 4 good match ups, or did any one team seem to stand out?

being an amherst supporter, im also curious as to how the girls looked after losing such a large senior class last year (from the box scores, it seems theyve recovered JUST fine :) but id love a first hand account

I'm not catching what your pitching here Spike. Ol' Phil leads with the term Garbage Hockey so he's going to get a push back. EC fans aren't upset, they love the physical aspect of the game...but if you disrespect the Laura Hurd scarf they will get in your face.

As for Jamie "Bam Bam" Huntley well thats just so...2009. Let it go Spike...Let it go.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

My take as a "neutral" Obserbear:

Plattsburgh-the goal gods were not smiling on the Cardinals (they had several posts before they got a shot to go in on Saturday); showed some life in coming back from 3 down against Amherst to make a game of it with the 2 quick goals in the 3rd, but became frustrated against Midd; goal play needs to be sharper with better D net presence to keep those pesky forwards from the juicy rebounds (there have been years when Plattsburgh D were so good I could have played goal for them). I am sure Coach Houle will have a dangerous squad on the ice by crunch time.

Elmira- has a nice mix of youth and experience in front of a gamer goalie; Charron makes you pay anytime you give her the space; the Soaring Eagles are back (and they play at home a lot in February)

Middlebury-we may have seen the dawn of the Annabelle era (53/54 is not too shabby a weekend's work); play the good team D and do not make mistakes; the offense by committee means you never know which one of their outstanding players will be the one to beat you; hope Styrbicki and Melberg are not out too long; the Annabelle era may just preclude Midd being included in the NESCAC "parity."

Amherst-lost some All-American size to graduation, but seem quicker than last season; I was impressed by their 1st years against Plattsburgh and then they played more like 1st years against Elmira, but clearly quality players in the Amherst '15 class; Lloyd is scary on offense; Clegg is a force and like Swiontowski has been under appreciated for years; and Salerno is a steady, heady D; note to self-be at Orr 1/13-1/14 for the series to determine the regular season NESCAC champ!

Well although it's a good bit of writing it certainly has a NESCACian edge to it. ;)

I think the most telling sentence is the final one and it sums up the conference in general. The NESCAC Champ will be decided in mid January.... :(
