D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

I'd say be interesting to see the Rankings after this weekend. !......RIT and Norwich are 1-2, but who is next. ?

You could make a case for both Middlebury and Elmira IMHO...Let's not forget Middlebury and Elmira is officially recorded as a tie regardless of Elmira's shootout victory. I'd say give the slight edge to Elmira since they outshot Middlebury by a healthy margin in their meeting against each other.

And of course the western fans will clamor for River Falls and Gustavus Adolphus as well.

There is a nice writeup of the tournament on the Plattsbugh Womens web site. A nice team photo of the Elmira Women and Lauren Sullivan was the tournament MVP.

Anyone know if there was an All-Tournament team or was there just an MVP?

Here's why I would beg to differ, Prez. The shots on goal were pretty much even until the third period, when Elmira had the only two PP opportunities, not to mention Midd losing its #1 D with a wrist injury. I would continue to rank Midd ahead of Elmira at least until we get some additional common opponent scores.

I'd agree with Prez.

Firstly: PP opportunities are part of the game, and presumably the PP are created, due to presure by the team being offended, and by the offending team taking away opportunities.

Secondly, adjusting rankings based on players getting or being hurt?. That is not how it works. Witness BU. They are missing their best player, losing to high end opponents and as a result dropping in the rankings.

Rankings are based on how a team performs. In this case Elmira outshot Middlebury and won in a shootout, and proceeded to win the Classic. While Middlebury ended up with the same record, they did finish third, not first.

Wait! One of Elmira's D and one F had upper body injuries and one D had the flu, plus their bus driver had the trots. They outshoot Middlebury 29-15, 15-3 in the 3rd, give them a 5 on 3 in OT, win in a shootout and then go on to win the tourney, collect the MVP hardware and the Panthers move from 5th to 3rd in the polls and finish two spots ahead of EC?

Am I too late?

Edit: retains 3rd, my mistake.

And the team in 4th spot gets two first place votes, while the teams in second and third get none. ....That is a clear reflection of the warp factor. :)

USCHO Poll in comparison.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

Maybe its too early. Give it time :D

OT not in the mix seems to be the difference. It should count; why play it then? They had to have a winner on Saturday to play on Sunday did they not? Do they play OT during the season? What happens if some team wins in OT in the playoffs; does that count? Without the OT, the poll is correct. The D3.com thing is whacked.

Elmira beat Midd 2-1 in a shootout to determine which team played for the Cardinal/Panther title on Sunday. The "official" result was Midd 0 Elmira 0 which goes in as a tie after the 5 minute OT failed to produce a goal.

Re: D3 Scores and Highlights - Let the season begin!

...If that 0-6 loss was "playing them tight" (cause I am going to discount the first game on the shot count alone), then I have to go with UMass in the Colby match-up, even at the Mules' barn -- 'cause the Beacons played the defending national champs tight too: 0-5. :D

plus, UMass has got a head of steam up now, and it's still early season for Colby.

UMass gave up 3 in first and 1 in each period. There is a good reason Norwich is ranked #2...

UMass-Boston & Colby knotted up at 1 each... UMass-Boston vs Castleton this Friday should be intresting...

That's what I was meaning to say....shootout, not OT. Was in a rush at the time...my bad. Like I said, the one poll may be correct when a tie is considered; Middlebury should not be penalized for a tie. Elmira did not play Plattsburgh but are much higher in the poll now than before; understandable. Elmira did not beat Middlebury, but one might argue in their favour if you consider the tournament win? I dunno. It's probably fair the way it is, but having won in a shootout, and appearing to dominate the play, Elmira might be getting the short end of the stick. Plenty of hockey to be played. :)

The Spartans are an improved lot and looking to keep that win streak alive....they may just light the Beacons up...
