D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

So now that the rosters for the USA and CAN 18s teams are out, any word on where some of the players are looking to go?

I've updated the Commits list to reflect those playing for the US and Canadian 18s.

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Hopefully this is just a rumor and not starting a trend. I guess it would not be surprising if a few early commits don't honor their commitment especially if we see more of the pre-Junior Yr committing. This will likely be the biggest decision they have made so far and some kids just aren't ready to make that kind of critical decision two years before the first day of class. You want the player to ultimately be happy and be in the right situation and players/coaches do not want a player in the program who doesn't want to be there so maybe it's a positive in those cases. I guess on the flip-side, because the early commits are usually the most coveted, it might put a team in a tough position because they may have passed on some like players who are now no longer available. Hopefully though we won't hear of too many others. I have always been intrigued by the "verbal commit" and it's integrity in womens hockey vs lets say Mens basketball. (See the Sports Illustrated article a few weeks back.) I have been watching this off and on over the last 10 years. Anyone have a good feel on how often players change their mind? Also, seems like more players are transferring this year. True?

A very good thing IMO that for women's hockey virtually all verbal commitments are kept and I would certainly hope that remains the case and there is no emerging trend towards what is typical for the big $$$ men's college sports. One difference, which I also hope remains a distinction...less "poaching" by opposing coaches among women's hockey staffs than you get with staffs of hoops and football teams for the men. Verbals mean nothing to many of those coaches. Or so I've heard. Little bit of that in D-I men's puck too. I'm actually impressed by these young women who know what they want early and set about achieving their goals with determination...and the fact they honor those verbal commitments at such a high pct. and proving they made an informed, careful decision and the right move for them. Nothing wrong with taking your time for such a big decision...but if you know in your heart where you want to be in two years prior to your junior season in HS, nothing wrong with that either. Didn't one of the Marvin girls commit to UND before her sophomore HS season? Now that's early! Sure some will have a change of heart after a verbal commitment is given. They're young...it's okay, they're entitled to change their mind. I don't see a big increase in, or trend towards not honoring a verbal commitment among the women...as long as the poaching doesn't become as common as it is for some of the men's athletics.

I guess on the flip-side, because the early commits are usually the most coveted, it might put a team in a tough position because they may have passed on some like players who are now no longer available.
Yeah...it happens. It has happened the same via a player delaying their commitment as well. Coaches usually if not always have their deadlines though when it comes to awaiting a yes or no...or so I've heard. :)

Re: D1 Commitments 2012-2013

Ok please excuse the newbie post here but why is Holy Cross in the D1 commitment discussion. I was under the impression they were an ECAC East DIII team. Did they move up to DI in 11 or 12?

Because they are D1 in all sports. They just happen to play a DIII schedule. I guess we are trying to will them into stepping up to the D1 plate. ;)
