Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell up 3-0 after 2. Karpenko scored from Zorn and K. Overguard scored from Jue and Young. Cornell now leads in shots 25-16.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Hey Matt, this is the first time I've seen them play in a while. How does this compare to their last few games?

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

6-0 final score. Karpenko scored unassisted as did Zorn. Rougeau scored from A. Overguard. Final shots were 34 to 21 Cornell.

I'd say our play today was much better than last weekend, at least from an offensive stand point. The passing was definitely off against both SLU and Clarkson. I thought we played very well in the second game against Colgate (didn't see the first) two weekends ago and played well against Quinnipiac last night too.

EDIT: I would say we played a bit better today than last night. We had better lateral movement from the start of the game today, where as yesterday it took us until the third before we really started trying to get the goalie moving side-to-side more.

Great game. I thought Cornell looked a little sloppy in the first, but really picked up their game after that. You've gotta love thier speed. Kudos to Mazzotta on another shut out!

If I did my math right, Cornell will lock up the Ivy title with another win next weekend (preferably 2 wins next weekend).

Cornell has already clinched a share of the Ivy Title (there are no tiebreakers in Ivy League hockey), so a single point should be enough to take it outright.

If you love their speed this year, wait until next year.....They are adding some more......

1 ... Johnston Returning.
2 ... A Cornell recruit I saw up at the Winterlude tournament this weekend. Blazing Speed. Check this out.

Congrats to Mazzotta for being named the ECAC GOTW. She is now tied for first in the nation, along with Dahm of Clarkson, for the most shutouts this season at 8.

Cornell up 3-0 on Brown mid-way through the second period. I cannot get the video feed to work at this point. I only have audio.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell/Yale 0-0 after 1. Cornell with the shots edge 13-8. Overall, a pretty uneventful period.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

1-0 Cornell. Cornell scored on their first PP of the game with about 30 seconds left in the 2nd. Rougeau scored from White and Fortino. Cornell outshooting Yale 34-17.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell wins 1-0. Cornell led the final shots 47 to 19. Congrats to Cornell for going undefeated in the Ivy League this season and to Mazzotta on her 4th straight shutout and tenth on the season (). :D

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Congrats to Amanda Mazzotta for being named the ECAC GOTW again. She is now tied for the school ice hockey shutout record with former men's goalie David McKee at 10. She already broke the women's record when she hit 8.

Congratulations indeed, 4 in a row is a remarkable feat. Wow.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

In other news, it appears Cornell is tied for 9th in PWR despite a 1-6 non-conference record. I haven't looked at the comparisons, but if they can avoid losing to lower-ranked teams and win 1 game in the ECAC final four they might have a shot at an at-large bid to the NCAAs. Regardless of what happens, this has been a tremendous season for the Big Red, and it's a great boost in confidence and experience for next season when Johnston and co return.

It'll be really interesting to see how the league shakes out next year with the Olympians back in the mix, but for right now we should just enjoy the ride.

THIS ;) what an outstanding season for the Big Red going into the tournaments - should be a model for all those struggling programs - 3 years ago, we were underwhelmed to say the least when we watched a few Cornell games and now, well..what a difference a great recruiting class can make and the future looks even better with returning and incoming players next year!

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell up 1-0 after 1. Hughes scored from K. Overguard. Shots on goal are 5-3 Cornell. Defense was definitely the primary focus of both teams during the first period with not a bunch of offensive chances by either side. Cornell controlled play the first half of the period, but RPI started to pick it up as the period went on and will have 22 seconds of PP to start the second.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

1-1 after 2. Cornell has the shots on goal edge 16-10. We gave RPI a few too many chances for my liking in that period and they capitalized on one.
