Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Kidding aside, considering where Cornell was when Derraugh took the helm from Mel Davidson, it begs me to ask, did the University made other changes or did the coaching change alone make that much difference?

I know it might not be readily apparent from the outside, but I've always been a believer in Ms. Davidson and thought she did a lot to lay the foundation to help get the program moving back in the right direction.

It is not apparent. Davidson was 14-64-7 during her three years at Cornell and her last season was her worst (2004-05, 3-22-3). That was five seasons ago so every player now playing for the Big Red (Rebecca Johnston included) came in under Derraugh.

No question Derraugh has had much more success on the recruiting front and as I said before he's done a fantastic job with the program. But I also think there was a number of things Davidson did a very well and the program is better now because of it. When people thought Canada was at a disadvantage because Davidson was the coach, I knew they would be in for a rude awakening.

Cornell up 2-0 on Colgate in the first. Fortino scored unassisted and Ogilvie got one from Martino.

2-0 after 1. Cornell has the shots on goal edge 8-5 and has pretty much controlled play. Very good solid start to the post season.

Still 2-0 after 2. Cornell leads the shot count 19-16. Cornell played great for the first half of the period and had an 8-1 shots advantage for the period than started running into penalty trouble. Fortunately, Mazzotta has been quite sharp. Can't say I love the refing this game.

Colgate scored on the PP to Make it 2-1 with about 13 minutes left in the third.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell scores a beautiful goal on their first PP at just over 7 minutes into the game. White from Rougeau.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell scores again to make it 3-0 with about 4 minutes left in the first. Danforth from Rougeau and Hughes.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Rougeau makes it 4-0 on the PP from Fortino and Overguard. she took a pass on the top of the circle and walked around the entire colgate team including their goaltender.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Rougeau scores another on the PP mid way through the 3rd to make it 5-0. Karpenko got the assist.

5-0 final score. Final shots were 35 to 19. Rougeau lead the way with 2 goals and 2 assists. White also notched 2. Mazzotta with another shutout.

I'm getting excited for next Friday now that I know who Cornell will be playing. It looks to be a great game!

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Hope your semifinal doesn't end up being 2 or 3 games. RPI seems to be capable of that. ;)

And as I said in the other thread, Cornell can put themselves in position for an at-large bid (barring a Hockey East or WCHA surprise winner) by winning this game. Of course your chances are best served by winning two games this weekend.

I agree with this. With all due respect to the previous coach, the program was in a downward spiral when Davidson took over. I'm not sure any coach would have turned it around in 3 seasons, and I think she did a fine job.

Derraugh's work at Cornell has been nothing short of amazing. The Big Red can advance to the NCAAs for the first time ever with two wins this weekend, and may be able to secure a bid with a win on Friday. As far as I know, this is also Cornell's first ECAC semifinal appearance. Winning the league crown will be tough - all four semi-finalists could conceivably win it, although RPI is probably the weakest contender.
