Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

As far as I know, this is also Cornell's first ECAC semifinal appearance.
Yup, it is. However, Cornell finished 3rd in the 1989-90 season with 14-4, but didn't compete in the ECAC tournament, while Harvard did at 10-9-1. I have absolutely no idea why things turned out this way that season.

But that was Cornell's only top 4 finish, regular season of playoff, since the ECAC tourney started in 1985. They had a number of 5th-place finishes and quarterfinal exits.

No, because the semis and finals are played on the same weekend, they are a single-game format.

Yes indeed. I think that dave1381 was alluding to the possibility of a single game being as long as two or three.

Hmmm... Quarters are best two of three, but Semi's are single game knockout ?....Interesting...Why not be consistent, one way or the other.?

The WCHA does it the same way. I suspect the reasoning there is that if you are going to have Ohio St or UND travel somewhere to play a quarterfinal, you may as well have it be at least two games rather than just one. The semis/final are played at a single site, and it really isn't feasible to play multiple best-of-three series in one weekend. You could expand the tournament to three weekends, but then a team could conceivably play 9 tournament games in three weeks and be worn out for the NCAAs. Plus the regular season would have to be shortened.

And perhaps the number one reason in the WCHA -- this is roughly what the men do, albeit with more teams.

The NCAA tournament as currently constituted is consistent. All games are single elimination games starting with the quarterfinals. Makes it a bit harder on the favored team because as we know, anything can happen in a one game playoff.

I often don't bother to read the pre-game notes on the CU site because they tend to be pretty basic... or so I thought. There's a lot of good info in here. Although, I do wonder if the author should lay off the Red Bull... :D

GO BIG RED!!!

LOL. That is by far the most comprehensive pre-game report this year. I kind of like it. Hopefully, the athletic depart continues to put out this kind of effort. Attendance last weekend was also much higher than normal. The second game against Colgate had 835 people in the stands, according the box score. I really hope that continues to build too!

Rougeau set White up on a partial break away to give Cornell a 1-0 lead 3 and 1/2 minutes in.

First period ends in a 1-1 tie. Cornell has the 6-5 shots edge. White almost scored another with about a minute left in the period but Van der Bleik was up to the challenge.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell takes the 2-1 lead early in the first on a goal from Danforth assisted by White and Rougeau.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell takes the 3-1 lead on a goal by Zorn on assists by Karpenko and Ogilvie.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell is now up 4-1. Goal by A. Overguard assisted by Danforth and K. Overguard. RPI called a time out following the goal.

Congrats to Cornell.

Only way they miss NCAAs now is either
(1) they blow this lead
or
(2) they lose the ECAC final and one of BU/Providence/Bemidji/OSU wins two games this weekend.

If form holds, they could be headed back to Mercyhurst, just like the season began.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Cornell had a PP goal waved off with a couple seconds left in the second as the refs deemed it was kicked in. Didn't see it clear enough to have an affirming or dissenting opinion.

Period ends 5-1. Shots on goal through two are 24 to 6.
