Awesome game at Baker tonight! Cornell came out hard and fast, totally dominating in the first period. Princeton turned it on in the second. They had a few good chances in both the 2nd and 3rd periods, but Mazzotta stood firm.
I agree - Weber looked very good. She did a great job to keep it a 1 goal game.
Cornell/Quinnipiac 1-1 after 1. White deflects a McGinty shot from the point to tie the game up. Shots on goal 12-4 Cornell. Hughes scores after blocking a clearing attempt by Mazzotta and putting the puck into a basically open net. The play resulted from a somewhat lackadaisical defense. Cornell looked a bit flat up until that point in the period, but turned it up a notch after that.
3-1 Cornell after 2. Karkpenko scores on the power play from Fortino. And Karlee Overguard scores short handed. Shots 22-6 Cornell. The Big Red played much much better that period.
A nice article on Cornell Sophomore defender Jess Martino. I'm surprised she wasn't much more heavily recruited. She's quick, a good passer, comfortable rushing the puck, sees the ice well and is very smart defensively. Definitely glad she chose to come to Cornell.
First game against Niagara is about to start. I would really like to see a sweep by Cornell this weekend. Niagara is playing much better under their new coach and battled MC tough last weekend so we'll have to show up for a full 120 minutes of hockey.
1-1 after two. Shots on goal 27-12 Cornell. White rung one off the Niagara post shortly before Niagara got the equalizer. Cornell's out playing Niagara for the most part but they're definitely a tough team.
Well, not a very enjoyable 1st period against Niagara this Sunday afternoon. Niagara gets a short handed goal on a break away and follows it up with even strength goal after a blatant trip of a Cornell D skating up with the puck just inside the Cornell blue line. Shots on goal 10-7 Cornell. We didn't play a terrible period and have had enough of our own chances. I'd say Niagara is playing a little better than they did yesterday as well.
Cornell lost 2-1. Karpenko scored on the PP from Zorn and Rougeau. Cornell definitely had the run of the third period out shooting Niagara 17-1 in the period and 38 to 22 for the game, but Bauer was very solid in net. An unfortunate first period and a ton of near misses did us in. Such is life.
Going to OT tied at 2. Cornell really turned it on in the third and finally scored with a couple of seconds left. Have to admit I wasn't thinking pleasant thoughts in the seconds leading up to our goal. Now its time to get the OT win.
