Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

and Cornell pulls off the weekend sweep!!!! 4-3 Big Red. Karpenko scored on the PP from Zorn and White and Jue scored the goal ahead goal. Final shots were 26-19 Cornell. Cornell played MUCH better in the 3rd, but there were some tense moments in the end as Cornell got a penalty with 1 minute remaining. Congrats Cornell!!

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

. . . I was pretty impressed with Cornell in the opening weekend series against Mercyhurst. If Meryhurst is truly the best team in D1 women's hockey this year, Cornell should be right in the thick of things to challenge for home ice in the ECAC. Our defense is by far the best I've seen in the last 10 years. The addition of Rougeau and Fortino is huge. Coupled with McGinty, Young and Martino, we have significantly improved our defensive speed and agility top to bottom. We did much better job of moving the puck up ice than I've seen in prior years in the defense through neutral zones. We were also more affective at limiting Mercyhurst's scoring chances than I expected.

We did have trouble scoring against Mercyhurst. Certainly part of it was Mercyhurst has very solid defense and goaltending, but we also did not capitalize on our opportunities and hit a couple of posts. We also need to do better job of setting up players on the back door and getting the opposing goalie moving side to side. There are some nice guns up front, but we're missing the cannon. I'm hoping that the rest of the forwards are able to step it up and compensate for that absence.

I have no complaints with Mazzotta's performance in net. The goals Mercyhurst scored she really couldn't do anything about.

All in all I think Cornell is a better team than last year. We should give up fewer goals, but will also probably have more difficulty scoring as well (at least in the early going).

What should I expect to see from Dartmouth?

Had I seen this before the game I would have been beter prepared! ;) Was on the road, sorry I didn't get to return the favor.

I really enjoyed reading the above blog on Cornelll dual sport athlete Melanie Jue. She's always been a solid member of the Big Red, but I think she (along with the other seniors) has really stepped up her game in a big way this season. You'll have to scroll down to find the article on her.

Cornell is up 1-0 on RPI after 1. Fortino scored from Karpenko. Shots on goal are 14-1 Cornell.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

2-1 Cornell after 2. Hughes scores from Rougeau and Ogilvie. Unfortunately, Cornell fell asleep in the waning seconds of the period. The puck pops out to Gersten in the high slot unprotected and she rifles in a nice top shelf goal. Shots through two are 25-7 Cornell.

3-1 Cornell final score. White scored the only goal of the 3rd from Rougeau. Final shots were 29-19 Cornell.

Run out of rep. To answer your questions.

Can't answer the first question, top secret
Dunno the answer to the second question except to say one is a work in progress.

I guess I'll have to be patient. You know where to find me if anything changes. ;) :D

On to this weekend's games...I'm really looking forward to playing Clarkson on Friday. I've watched two of their games this season (@ SLU and @ Harvard). They are definitely a good team. They have good team play and are physically very imposing. With that said, based on what I've seen, Cornell looks to have more speed than Clarkson. I expect this to be a fairly low scoring affair. Here's to Cornell pulling off an upset.

IMHO, Off all the teams in the ECAC, Cornell has the best chance to knock of Clarkson. They have speed and a solid D core to manage the Clarkson forwards.

Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

This is a good one coming up. Cornell hasn't been a factor in Women's Hockey for many years. And actually start each year with high hopes, much hopeful talk. This year those hopes may have materialized. They now appear to be reversing their disappointments of the past. Even without Johnston and Jenner. Both teams on a roll. I'm thinking it might come down to goaltending and while Dahm has the edge with me, Cornell might just see this opportunity as superior even to knocking of Dartmouth and Harvard back to back. If so, and remember such things as Ken Dryden helping recruit such as Laura Fortino, many good things can happen at home.

To be fair, I think a lot of the hopeful talk was more of the "Cornell might not be terrible this year" variety, and less of the "Cornell could take home ice in the ECAC playoffs" sort. The last time the Big Red had even a decent shot at the ECAC tournament crown was 1998. The last time they had a realistic shot at home ice in the playoffs was. . . 1998. Heck, this is the first time in recent memory where *making* the playoffs isn't enough to call it a good season.

I do agree that this year could see Cornell in contention for home ice, and the Big Red are finally coming together as a strong contender in the ECAC. I think they're a year away from really making a push for the top of the league standings, but the next couple of seasons should be fun to watch. Big games against the North Country teams this weekend - both should be tough - and I think we'll know more about Cornell's chances for this year after the SLU/Clarkson games.

Another great win by Cornell yesterday. Defense remains strong. Mazzotta is playing lights out, and our offense is coming together nicely. We have lots of forwards stepping up big. Ogilvie and Hughes are playing with more confidence each time I see them. Ogilvie scored the first goal of the game yesterday, and has already surpassed her point total from her rookie campaign. Hughes had a very solid rookie season, but missed the second half of last season due to injury. It is great to see her back out there.

Looking forward to rooting them on against SLU this afternoon.

Cornell over SLU 1-0 after 1. White scored for Fortino and Danforth. Official shots are just 4-3 Cornell. That seems a little low to me, but there have been a number of shots wiffed and pucks bobbled. Not sure if the ice surface is bad or just one of those periods were things are a bit off.

Re: Cornell Big Red Women's hockey 2009-2010

2-1 Cornell after 2. McGinty scored from White and Jue. Shots 13-7 SLU after 2.

Ugg...Cornell lost 3-2. SLU's a good team. We played kind of sloppy at times today.

Cornell 1-0 after 1. White scores from Jue (I missed the goal as the video feed wasn't working for me at that point). Shots 12-1 Cornell.
