Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

So the Big Red punch their ticket to Minneapolis next weekend with their 6-2 win over Harvard. They will take on the winner of Mercyhurst and BU.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

Congrats Matt -- are you coming to the Frozen Four?

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

The Big Red have had some trouble holding leads -- is this one safe?:)

Totally. This is college hockey's most under-rated team with a win against college hockey's most over-rated team. Anyone who considers this to be an upset just hasn't been paying attention.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

We'll have to see how the opponents of opponents of Harvard do in the other games before we know for sure if a four-goal win is enough for Cornell to advance.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

IMO, this didn't look like a match between conference rivals accustomed to playing each other. Harvard didn't seem to show Cornell as much respect as you'd expect when playing a team that had already burned them defensively. Of course, I didn't see how the other games unfolded, so maybe the Crimson thought it was important to be the aggressor.

I agree Cornell has been underrated in the polls.

It's fair to say that Harvard was not the No. 4 team in the country without Kessler in net, and they would not have picked three points against Minnesota without her.

I thought they'd fade entirely once Kessler went down and not even make NCAAs, but they managed to do just barely enough to preserve that No. 4 rank. Their best wins with Bellamy were over borderline top 10 Northeastern and Providence, and they didn't beat any of the other top 5 ECAC teams in the 2nd half. But they did take care of business against weaker opponents, in a way that a lot of the top teams failed to do. So give them some credit.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

Let's call a spade a spade...the first 2 goals were extremely weak/slow shots even if her defense let her down...this was just terribly slow, confused and inept goaltending...and not just for those two goals...from what the commentators indicated earlier with respect to her previous play I expected to see something much different. Maybe she just caved to the pressure of a high profile dance card? Anybody know how she usually plays?

Is it just me or does this ice surface look small?

Bright has a bit smaller sheet.

I agree that Bellamy did not look good on the first two goals. That said, the way for a team to help support a freshman goalie is not to make her have to stop two breakaways on the first two shots she faces.

I don't think anyone is going to be able to find a point of comparison for "how she usually plays" because she's never been hung out to dry like that to start a game.

Well thankfully we have a tournament.

If you think conference regular season & playoff standings should be criterion in comparing teams from the same conference, go right a letter to the NCAA women's ice hockey committee. In the meantime, Harvard went 5-0-2 in nonconference play, Cornell went 1-6, and that's pretty much why they got to host. Have a nice day.

Statistical modeling I've seen indicates that Cornell will be required to return to Cambridge on Monday night and win by at least 6 goals before being allowed to advance.

Seriously, whether it's the best process or not it's the only way teams from different conferences can have any hope of being compared in any objective manner. Cornell just has to do a better job in the future...the whole season matters.

And Cornell handled it the best way that they could -- they ignored home ice and just went out and played.

I heard the since Harvard has statistically had more successful seasons than Cornell, the NCAA has decided to allow Harvard to advance regardless of the score.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

How had Bellamy been playing? Until tonight, Bellamy had a 1.35 GA in 17 games for the Crimson after being thrust into the starting role after Kessler's season-ending injury.

A freshman, she was an all-state first team selection playing for her high school team in Duluth, according to her bio.

All of the foregoing doesn't really prepare you to face two breakaways on your first two shots of the game.

I expect we'll see a lot of good things from Ms Bellamy over the next three years.

Re: Cornell at Harvard, Friday 7 p.m.

Also, Cornell fans, it's hardly like you got screwed by the objective criteria of the NCAA process (which many of you seem to be mocking) relative to human judgment. Most of the human beings had you rated below the numbers for most of the season. The USCHO poll had you 6th to close out the season.

The committee had you 5th, which I think might have been higher than any poll all season (or at least since December).

So why on earth are you whining about objective criteria to evaluate teams? Please.

Thanks...I just read her bio. I was also trying to find, from the Harvard news releases, when Kessler got injured...but no success...was it in January?...I read somewhere that it was a knee injury...is that correct?
