That can't be from an editor, right? I sure hope not, anyway.

What is a symbolic arrest and why is it sickening?

From my understanding from what I read, the protesters were agreeing to having a few of the leaders arrested, they would disperse, and then the arrested would be released the next day or similar. Basically a "Show of force" to appease people like me, and then upon release to appease the protesters.

Yes, I'm serious.

So an attempt to de-escalate? Ohsnoes!

Straight up arrest them. I am seeing the footage now. Over a dozen warnings to disperse, fireworks/etc being thrown at the police? Arrest. Period. That's not a protest, that's a riot.

If people break the law and nothing is done about it, that is not a good precedent to set. If they want to protest and shutdown roads, then they should go into it knowing they'll be arrested, because they should be arrested.

The tweet has been deleted. But I'm assuming somebody is getting thit canned tomorrow.

Saw the tweet posted here, and I couldn't run away from that one fast enough.

I've not said the cops shouldn't arrest law breakers - I'm saying I don't find the proposal disgusting. Misguided, but not disgusting. Dial it back a notch ferchrisakes. You're not the only one here with close ties to law enforcement.

I'm disgusted by the tactic. Ok, sorta arrest us, and we'll go home. It's negotiations with law-breakers. No. You knowingly break the law, you pay the price. Sorry. It DOES set a precedent.

This has all happened before. And it will happen again.

During the late 1960s, the United States saw firsthand what could happen when institutional racism was allowed to persist. The string of racial violence Americans have witnessed in the past three years has brought the nation to a comparable historical inflection point—and one that, depending on the results of the election in November, could be just as consequential.

If the precedent is a preferred outcome over the alternative (continued rioting, law-breaking, etc.) it's not disgusting. If they do in fact get arrested I am fine with that, but is it disgusting?

I know you're not a rabble-rouser, you are an intelligent person. We happen to disagree on this issue. I would like that known. :) I hope tonight is not a repeat of past protests.

I'm kind of closer to this line of thinking or even that this is a decent proposal. I get the law breakers should go to jail thing. All this pretty much usually holds true. But every once in a while things get critical...and problem solving requires being creative.

Protests are legal and part of free speech. Even if protesters continue to protest strictly legally, they can cause problems and its within their rights to do so. I think everyone gets that there's a proposal of moderation here. In fact, there's an opportunity for the government to be the bigger party. If that leads to the other side disbanding protests...that's a pretty big move too as protesting is a right. Frankly whoever suggested this goes a ways towards showing who's wearing the big boy pants in this situation.

I interpret that as to who's running the show. And it shouldn't be the protesters. It should be those that have sworn to uphold the law.

Edit: I HOPE that you mean "who is the adult in the situation" but in this case, the protesters are not being the adults.

Ok, some reprieve for the protesters last night. Apparently 8 of the 21 arrested were from out of state, which I see as just people trying to start sh*.

Perhaps this is the source of the disconnect - I'm not saying there should be any negotiating with anyone that engaged in violence and/or assaulted anyone. If it's just dummies standing in the way though? I don't see all that much harm. And in this regard the cops are still the ones in charge. :)
