Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

OH PUL-LEEZ let's not drink the arsenic. Guys when we're outshooting the opponent 52-26, something's being done right. Unfortunately it's one of those things where when their g is so good, after a while we start to take chances. By the third period we're sending defensemen in deep (look at Joespher battling for the puck in the corner) and yeah you give up some odd man rushes and we did - I think Northern had only one "dirty goal". So we just have to do EXACTLY what we did for two periods last night.

Just lift the puck a little bit.

You are right on here Owsla... It looked to me like the Spartans really owned the game, other than putting the puck by the goalie. I thought their (Northern's) second goal was perhaps a bit soft as Yanakeff probably should have had that one, but overall the Spartans outplayed the NMU team. Everyone has to respect this team come playoffs.

Man if we could just learn how to FINISH, bury our chances, this team has all the pieces to make a run. Ever since the start of that third period in Ferris 17 days ago, seems to me MSU's done everything else (skating, positioning, passing) well. Just have to figure a way of getting out of 10th place. Even jumping up one place by senior night makes a huge difference, because there're two teams we'd absolutely not want in our way to JLA.

Ah but we'll see how they respond tonight. Stay active in front of the net ye forwards. That freshman Canuckian goalie can't possibly duplicate last night's effort.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

It's not that this team is bad; they just can't ****ing score.

Here's the one thing I see - and I've said this before - players looking for the perfect shot, rather than just shooting. There was one instance last night where DCheli took a pass from someone, puck right on his stick, and instead of shooting right away it was a full two seconds. The angle was gone and it was too late. Shoot the biscuit, crash the net, be in the slot and get the rebound.

Here's one other thing - Yes, players, I know you're frustrated. I know losing sucks eggs. I know you want to win as much as we are rooting you on to win. But please, be mature enough to not let your anger get the better of you. I don't know what got Grassi a game misconduct last night, but it must have been pretty good. Please, for once, walk away? Kthxbai.

I think Grassi, who was visibly frustrated, accidentally slashed a ref.

I blame myself a bit. Looking at the schedule, I really fell in love with the idea of climbing from the depths of hell in the last six games by winning five and vaulting ourselves into considerably better position in the standings.

I'll admit, I'm naive. And mentally frayed from frustration.

In retrospect, I'll say we did a good job in many aspects of last night's game. Still wasn't an artistic masterpiece, though.

That is just the way Northern plays and beats us at Munn, it seems. Lights out goaltending, shot blocking, sticks in the passing lanes and a whole lotta luck sometimes. It's terribly frustrating to watch. After the first period i told my dad that "no team can get dominated in a game, yet somehow stick around and pull out a win as frequently as Northern can". I was already getting that feeling only 1/3 of the way through the game.

The team worked **** hard last night and deserved the win. I felt for the players and coaches because you could tell that they were all very frustrated. It would be one thing to have had a great season and experience one of these losses becuase they are not uncommon, but for a team that is starved for wins and perhaps deserved a few more over the year, a game like this has gotta be beyond infuriating.

Well, tonight is do or die. We are just gonna have to take the series from Alaska next week.

Why is this game at 5? And why is this game on FSN Plus? Bball is off until Tuesday, women's bball doesn't play until tomorrow, and the Red Wings and Pistons are both off until tomorrow.

I say, just never ****ing mind. They really played like crap from start to finish. Can next season get here fast enough?

You know, if I never see Northern Michigan as a participant in a hockey contest again, I'd be OK with that.

NMU's been the total bane of my existence during my time here.

Fittingly, not ready for prime time.

Now THAT game we deserved to lose.

No better way to say it.
How can a team come out of a second intermission so unprepared? How can you, when you're trying to salvage a home series, some dignity - something out of the SEASON - and get schooled in the neutral zone, get outshot 16-7 even with a 6 man-minutes of power play - and worst of all look like you don't even want this game?

Seriously, you gonna blame it on 19 guys in skates?
