Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

As I get info on this "incident" from Friday, it appears that Judge Downes made a comment to Comely. Comely lost his cool, and left an interview to confront the Judge Downes. Interesting to get the real story on how this played out. Comely seemed to be the aggressor from what I am hearing from some pretty good sources.

Not to bag on your "sources", but it's just not believable. I'm sorry.

From what have heard from sources that were actually there, this other man was the aggressor.

Why would this Judge Downes feel the need to make a comment at all? Unless it was something along the lines of "congrats on a fine career, you've done a lot for college hockey" in which case I'm sure Comely would not have reacted in any sort of a negative way. Any other type of comment and I would have to conclude that this judge is pretty immature and hardly the kind of person I'd think is qualified to sit in judgement of others.

I was at the game, and from a distance saw some of the commotion. Unless your source was the MSU player (I believe Nightingale or something like that) or Comely, I can without a doubt guarantee you my sources were better than yours.

I don't condone Judge Downes for saying what he said. All said, Downes should have said nothing and left it at that. However he did say something and Comely left an interview to confront him. Comely should have kept his cool, let it slide off his back, and moved on. Opposing players and coach’s take gruff from fans at all arenas every night, and you hardly see anything transpire like this. I think Comely, who was going crazy already, lost his temper even more. Both parties are at fault here. It's that simple.

So you have a coach, in a playoff situation, already emotional regarding a possible bad call (it wasn't, by the way... right call was made) and some punk-*** judge spouts off and tries to get his goat? And then is surprised when he reacts? C'mon, hockey is highly emotional and no fan should have access to anyone from another team that easily.

I don't suggest to say that Comley should have reacted, but that fan should not have been able to get that close. I say that the arena is at fault the most, and that the fan should not be allowed back to the arena. If he had done that to a coach that is 20 years younger, there might have been a real problem. Let's face it, you don't poke at a mad dog just because you think it shouldn't be mad.. No excuses for Comley's reaction, but it didn't need to get to that point with proper security.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Comley was wrong in his actions. That is no way to act in front of your team, he should know better. Or, Maybe he has "Woody Hayes Syndrome" or old coots disease.
Luckily it was Comley and not a player.

The rinks have incredibly poor security if you remember the Tropp-Conboy incident at Yost.

Plenty of blame for all for all to get a large portion.

Let's just call this a FAIL with all parties being at fault.

Lock the topic with this .

I could not have imagined a worse way for a career to end than the way his did. Let it not be his epitaph.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I agree with you guys. No argument here. Hockey is emotional (as are other sports), but that isn't a good excuse for a mentor/coach/teacher to act the way he did. The same goes for Judge Downes, it's that simple. I don't care who started it or who finished it, they both acted immaturely. I hope the incident can be put to rest with no further issues. As I said before I don't like Comely, but respect the guy. I've been told he is a great guy by MSU fans. I know Judge Downes, and I can say the same of him. He is a great guy, super nice, and a huge Nanook hockey supporter. It’s a shame when two very distinguished and important people act like children! I'm sure this incident will improve security at future games. Still scratching my head how an incident between a Superior Court Judge and an iconic Hockey coach will be what motivates an improvement in security at future games. Isn't this the type situation you would expect students to be involved with? LOL Take care MSU fans, and we'll see you next year!

Agreed, and if it had been someone of less stature, we wouldn't even be talking about it. Good luck this coming weekend!

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I know no one wants to talk about this any more, but I am going to say one more thing - None of us, except the parties involved, know what was said and how it was said. Conjecture does no one any good. And if it motivates better security, who cares who inspired it? People of any age can act irresponsibly, and areas where players are ought to be secured. That said, good luck to all who have moved on.
