Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

I have no idea about the inner workings of our coaching staff but I can't honestly believe it was revenge driven in any way. If both were offered, the staff obviously wanted both of them. What sense does it make to lose one of them and then sacrifice another player they wanted just out of spite? It's only logical to try harder to keep the player. I think it makes much more sense that he did not want to come to MSU without his brother.

That's just my opinion, though.

I'd go with this. But I now wonder whether kd's claim in his piece is that Jacob Johnstone going to MTU prompted Comley to drop his offer to his brother, David - leading to D.Johnstone going north. Now that would be a HUGE reach (for one thing J.Johnstone was never recruited here. For another, sort of a gaffe - DJ's putting up monster numbers in Indiana).

Not revenge just negative. They seemed to turn off the players. Sometimes honey works better than vinegar.

Do you have any evidence, or is it just a feeling you have? Put up or shut up.

Watch the Big Chill game. Listen to the interviews (both Hollis and Comley). Then look back at the last few seasons.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Insane Kool-Aid Alert:
Winning out puts us at 47 points, which right now would be first place if every other team lost out. Since that is impossible, let's take a look at the standings after the Big Three. Western is sitting at 36 points, probably 39 after tonight even though they did lose last night. Their problem is that they have to play the Big Three to finish out the season, 5 of 6 on the road with ND being the lone home game. Now I haven't looked at the other schedules, but if this team can somehow win out, who knows what will happen, perhaps we somehow slip into that #4 spot for the first round bye, or at least get a favorable first round home playoff series with a 5 or 6 seed. With Yanakeff anything is possible!!!

Now something a little more level-minded:
Did anyone think that Comley's post game interview with BTN was a little odd? They were making all the "well, the players sure made you look good didn't they coach?" jokes, but he didn't really seem to laugh them off. In the end it he made it feel like he just sat behind the bench while the players did whatever. But it was a W so maybe he needs to do that more.

Yes. Wife and I noticed that too - he was a little ....grumpy?

Spartans played maybe 15 minutes - especially at end of 2nd period - at a high level last night. Yanakeff did the rest. We had a pretty good penalty kill for an 11th-lace PK team; power play - not so much. "good road win" as has been said, but they really need to duplicate last Saturday's effort to pick up league points tonight.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Well, good win last night. I don't think either team looked particularly good for any consistent stretch of time. It may just be the building because man, is that place barren. Yanakeff was the star, like he has been for nearly every game he has played. We are on a roll when he is in net.

I think we need to get more consistent offensive pressure. Despite the wins, we are not scoring goals. Yanakeff isn't gonna be able to keep the other team down every game.

Huge 3 points on the line tonight. We are in position to make a significant leap in the standings over the next few weeks and with 2 games in Alaska, we can't let these slip away. It would be a a great time for our first CCHA sweep of the year.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

So, what's the likelihood we somehow take five of our next six? I have a feeling that's probably what we're going to have to do if we don't want to be in a hopeless playoff position.

I think we have a pretty good shot at sweeping NMU and BGSU. UAF will be a terrifying series, however.

(That said, we haven't swept anybody all season.)

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

Well, we failed to sweep again. Shocking.

We mounted a pretty exciting comeback and OSU barely hung on for dear life but we couldn't capitalize. I don't even remember the last time we've scored a big, game tying goal with the 6th attacker at the end. I know that it is not easy but I would love to see it, especially considering it feels like we've been on the wrong end of such goals oh, say, probably at least 10 times over the last 2 or 3 years?

We have lacked some serious offensive punch, recently. With the way things are going, it would not surprise me at all to see us come away from Alaska with 1 goal on the entire weekend and 0 points.

However, This upcoming weekend, I think we can take all six points. It's at home, and Northern has been floundering recently.

I've mentioned the points need on at least 4 separate weekends and we have never got there so for now I am just gonna let it be, because maybe it's some curse, or something? Anyway, we all know what the results this next weekend must be.

Or foundering. Like with the fishes. Flounder, for example.

What is the playoff format now that there are only 11 teams? I'm so confused!!!

Here's the drill - First weekend, the top five get byes. #6 hosts #11, #7 hosts #10, #8 hosts #9. Second weekend, #4 hosts #5, and the top three get what's left - for example, if the seeds held #1 would host #6, #2 hosts #7 and #3 hosts #8. That still sends 4 to the Joe. Got it?

On that note, am I the only one who still misses the Super Six?

Every year i practically forget that we don't do that anymore. If people were to still ask me about playoffs in casual conversation I would probably still talk about the Super Six.

That was ugly, awful hockey, and the result could not have been any worse.

Bad, bad loss to take. I'm mashing the hell out of the panic button right now.

Re: Come Back With Your Shield, Or On It: MSU Spartan Hockey 2010-11

OH PUL-LEEZ let's not drink the arsenic. Guys when we're outshooting the opponent 52-26, something's being done right. Unfortunately it's one of those things where when their g is so good, after a while we start to take chances. By the third period we're sending defensemen in deep (look at Joespher battling for the puck in the corner) and yeah you give up some odd man rushes and we did - I think Northern had only one "dirty goal". So we just have to do EXACTLY what we did for two periods last night.

Just lift the puck a little bit.
