College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Of course if you man up and follow through with that, it's going to be tough to watch the Gophers as well.;)

I know that lots of fans root for "my team, period." To each their own. My "root for the league" approach is probably a little old school. But that's how I've always followed college football, and it probably always will be.

I root for all the Pac-10 teams except for FUCLA. And even when they beat UT this year, and Tennessee in previous years, I was pleasantly surprised.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I'd say most of my Cornell peers root for anybody from the conference except Harvard.

Come on, rooting against Harvard nowadays just isn't right ;)

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Couldn't give two ****s about the rest of the ACC. As long as Florida's on the non-conference schedule, a undefeated or one loss Florida State will get a reasonable shot, and North Carolina not sucking isn't going to change that.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

The joke was that Minnesota IS a Division I-AA school in football.

I got THAT. Considering the last three years, and the quality of some of the teams RR lost to, the App St. debacle was nothing.

Yep, they're a **** good program down there in Boone. They could have beat quite a few other big programs, only if they had the guts to play the Mountaineers.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I think it's somewhat of a generational thing. My dad (Michigan '78) usually wants to see the Big Ten do well in bowl games, but a friend of mine (Michigan '09) won't root for any other Big Ten schools during bowl season.
Yes, I think there's something to that.

The internet could be part of the explanation. With just a few mouse clicks you can find people from almost anywhere who are willing to insult your school/team. For better or worse, technology has made it much easier to develop an "us against the world" mentality. Back in the day, when your Dad and I grew up, you went to your own stadium every other other weekend, and watched The Game of the Week (meaning B10 Game of the Week) when the local team was on the road. The broadcasts generally painted each league member in a favorable light. Negativity was harder to find, or at least easier to ignore.

The other thing that may be in play is a lifers vs. transients split. If you've lived in the same community all your life, it's a little easier to maintain an "our team or the highway" mentality. If you've moved around a bit, or at least traveled, you find that neighboring communities have redeeming qualities, even similarities.;)

I am 28 and generally root for Big Ten teams, except Wisconsin.

Perfectly reasonable to root for your league, but to make an exception for an arch-rival or two. Certainly that approach is widely taken here in Columbus.

I wouldn't say that rooting for the league is dying out among your generation. But I do think that "my team, period" is gaining numbers.

Also, IIRC, you have ties to more than one campus. So you would actually fit in to my previous comment.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

26
Tier 1: Gophers
Tier 2: NW, Penn State
Tier 3: Underdogs not named Wisconsin or Michigan

Only ties to Gophers

I only have ties to Minnesota in the Big Ten. I also have ties to SCSU and UMD in the WCHA. I am one of the few SCSU/UMD hockey fans that will root for Minnesota in the NCAA tournament, but not Wisconsin or North Dakota (Due to unprovoked unpleasantness with Badger fans at Gopher football games, and Sioux fans at hockey games/division 2 sports events).

Michigan losing to Appy State made my heart smile too :)

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I typically root for most Big Ten and WCHA teams that aren't on the border, even vocally for WCHA teams from MN in the NCAAs.

That's how I remembered it. Based on my reading of the Men's WCHA threads, this pretty much qualifies you for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Again, you're allowed to harbor a grudge or two and still be loyal to your league as a whole.:)

You, and most of Columbus as well. But I had mixed emotions that day. On the one hand, I was genuinely happy the appealing underdog found a way to win. But I was also bummed out about the black eye given to Big Ten Football. A minority view, I know. But I am serious about league loyalty.

Michigan fans salute OSU on breaking their monumental 0-9 string against the SEC, too. Kinda like having a great meal then purging it.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Tonight's game intrigues me.

Boston College used to be Mr. Automatic when it came to winning bowl games but they've lost their last two and didn't have a great year in a weak ACC. On the other hand, has Nevada already acheived its crowning achievement of the season by getting a share of the league title and beating Boise? How focused are they on this bowl game?

I picked Nevada, but it wouldn't shock me if Boston College won it. The key matchup is Luke Kuechly vs the Nevada QB and keeping him contained from busting off long runs. Boise shut down Nevada and the QB for 2.5 quarters and dominated the game and then he scored a rushing TD and the Wolfpack dominated from there on out.

I can understand you feeling that way. Just clean up when you're done.:D

Dave Brandon is the AD of Michigan. His private jet is in Dallas. LSU just played the Cotton Bowl game in Dallas. Les Miles' agent is located in Dallas. Les Miles has a speaking engagement in Dallas on Tuesday.

That could all be a coincidence...
