College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

The best part about the whole Luck decision is that he had been indicating for quite some time his desire to stay in school and get his degree. But apparently the ESPN talking heads, in all their wisdom, couldn't believe that someone would not want to be involved in their 4 month long draft coverage and speculation, and that someone would do differently than they would have if they were remotely athleticly talented.

Lets be honest, the Talking heads at ESPN aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed now.

It honestly seemed that from the way Luck was posturing, he would come back for another year and maybe he knew something about Harbaugh that the media didn't...maybe they feel their year is next year and they'll run the table.

Well next year you're playing at USC and you won't be able to cheat with the clock to get a win that way. You'll have to earn it next year. :)

Yeah, I don't think we'd ever be able to win at USC! :p

As opposed to buying runningbacks cars right?

The Irish cheated there this year by scoring more points.

Once again, we are reminded that the E does not stand for News. Niether does the N.

The goal is to create entertainment either way. It's just as stunning and breaking news when a "Luck" forgoes his last year of eleigibilty and gives up on his education as much as when a "Luck" gives up on millions of dollars in one year in whatever pro sports they would be playing.

The point is to get you to watch, not be factual.

This is every bit as true for the acronyms where the "N" does stand for "News."

True, but in this instance, and other sports related instances, ESPN has a pretty major conlfict of interest- money vs. the actual reporting of sporting news. It's pretty easy to suggest that they altered the debate on recent NCAA rules violations.

You could argue that there is a similar conflict of interest with news networks. The networks need strife, so they stress stories that rile people up and create the very crises that they then use to boost their ratings. The domestic equivalent of "you furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war."

But yes, I agree ESPN is ludicrously compromised since it plays by turns the roles of newsman, fireman, arsonist, and kerosene salesman.

IMHO, The billboards are quite funny, and I'm guessing a majority of Buckeye fans agree.

Overall, Gordon Gee has done a fine job as University President. But when it comes to Athletics, the foot occasionally finds its way to the mouth. In this case, the comeback was well deserved. I only wish I was as well-funded as the guy who paid for the billboards.;)

And BTW, I was rooting for Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. I always root for the Big Ten teams in their bowls. Yeah, January 1 was brutal. But I still think the billboards are funny.:)

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I would rather poke my eyes out with hot pokers than watch a Big Ten (minus the gophers) team win a game. :)

Don't want to defend ESPN, but I think people just get caught up in Luck being the #1 prospect. Throw in that everyone thought Harbaugh would be leaving and I think everyone just assumed Luck would leave.

This needs to be repeated. And bolded. And put into big letters.

Carry on.

Oh yeah, that's right they did... keep getting mileage out of that old bit. RR lost to those I-AA like teams-Purdue,Toledo, etc. (Minny could be included) which were "so much better" than that App St. team. At least they were a NC of their division the year before- and at least that LC Michigan team beat Tebow in his backyard to save some face.

The joke was that Minnesota IS a Division I-AA school in football.

But since you are so eager to relive the glory days:

Of course if you man up and follow through with that, it's going to be tough to watch the Gophers as well.;)

I know that lots of fans root for "my team, period." To each their own. My "root for the league" approach is probably a little old school. But that's how I've always followed college football, and it probably always will be.

I think it's somewhat of a generational thing. My dad (Michigan '78) usually wants to see the Big Ten do well in bowl games, but a friend of mine (Michigan '09) won't root for any other Big Ten schools during bowl season.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

For me it's always a team by team basis. There's a few Big Ten schools I have no problem rooting for come bowl season.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I'd root for any ECAC team against any non-ECAC team (absent any bad effect to my own of course). I found that out during our 20-game winless streak against Harvard when I hated them passionately but still found myself rooting for them in the NCAAs. That was a... surprising... moment of self-discovery.

I'd say most of my Cornell peers root for anybody from the conference except Harvard.

A rising tide and all that.

Fans from less, ahem, respected conferences may be more likely to support their conference.
