College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

The problem with the delay was that in the absence of an affirmation that Michigan was committed to retaining Rodriguez, the period between the end of the season and the firing gave the appearance that Michigan was not committed to retaining Rodriguez. There was a lot of speculation that the whole thing was part of a dance to try to get Harbaugh. That's the sort of fuzziness that hurts recruiting and may also have indirectly led to the bowl debacle. I think Brandon probably should have fired Rodriguez irrespective of the bowl result, but if he intended to only perform an evaluation after the bowl, he needed to make a strong, public statement to that effect (which I don't recall that he did).

Meh, by all accounts RR didn't recruit very well to begin with at UM. Throw in that the new coach coming in is going to have a completely different style and I just don't things could get all that worse.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Andrew Luck is returning to Stanford. Reports are that Harbaugh will too, but other reports have him close to signing with the Dolphins...

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Switching offensive systems isn't the end of the world.

Charlie Weis sure as heck isn't running the Urban Meyer spread, and no one's acting like Florida's offense is a six year rebuilding project.

They could lose a home game to Minnesota...

The Pac Ten North should be quite interesting with Stanford and Oregon battling once again.

So I'm taking this as Luck doesn't want to go to Carolina? Also, what is Tony Sparano thinking right now? Can you sign a head coach without firing the current one???

It's not the end of the world, but it's still big. Florida has a lot of question marks offensively right now.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Courtside seats don't just materialize for anyone who happens to be down there, and they cost a pretty penny. Sounds legit that Barkley didn't provide the tickets, but sitting courtside at an NBA game is a benefit of significant value. Probably more than the cost of your run-of-the-mill tattoo I'd guess. Who knows, maybe Cam had saved his pennies for months to afford a courtside seat, but color me skeptical.
Maybe his dad gave him the money, rumor has it his dad had a big payday recently. Its still kosher with the NC$$ to get some dough from your parents, right? ;)

Or he actually wants to play next year instead of sitting out during a lockout.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Jack Locker thinks Luck is making a great decision. ;)

Perhaps you are not familiar with his body of work?

Like what the Round Mound of Rebound most famously said, "It's the SEC. If you're not cheating, you're not trying!"

Now, if they were smart, they would have gotten him up in say the owners box, and maybe in the lockerroom after the game prehaps.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

If someone gives a muddled answer to a question, it's not the media's fault if their thinking looks muddled when it's reported.

Come on, you can't be this naive. Perception matters, especially in recruiting.

Brandon's statement was fine. If he wanted to wait until the Bowl game, that's great - I assumed he was still working behind the scenes to find a new coach just in case he decides to axe this guy - that would be the prudent thing to do. How much was one more game, one more data point really going to change his mind?

Sorry, perception is reality. Brandon needed to move faster. By saying he'd wait until after the bowl game, everyone (including myself) thought he'd wait until after the bowl game to actually pull the trigger, but the decision to fire him had been made. Without a vote of confidence, RR twists in the wind, there is no replacement coach, etc.

If Brandon had decided to keep RR after that review, he's already done the coach more damage by letting him twist in the wind for a month.

The only possible reason you'd do that to yourself is if you're waiting on a specific guy you want who doesn't want his name in the papers until after the bowls (Harbaugh - same thing applied to Miles in 2007, as he was about to coach in the MNC game).

Brandon may have been played. I also think that the delay was due to the buyout being less after Jan 1st.

That's certainly part of it.

Again, that has more to do with delaying the action rather than delaying the decision.

We shall see who Michigan ends up with.

I've followed very closely as Weis installed his offense at ND and then as Kelly installed his. Also watched the UM transition with RRod with some interest. The QB's are extremely different...the skill sets are varied...example Dayne Crist. Mallett would have been playing for the Hogs this week if UM hadn't switched to the spread.

There is little need for big backs, no need for a FB in the spread. The spread typically utilizes smaller, faster receivers and TE is a position that isn't even required...ND has made use of theirs but they had 2-3 guys that were top TE prospects in the country...I don't think they'll sign many more and if they do they will be Aaron Hernandez types.

OL are very different too, aside from the pass/run mix and the skillsets that make some guys better at one than another, the spread often means hurryup which means fat slow guys need not apply. Snaps are nearly 100% shotgun so even the center has a different role. Kelly had to do a lot of work to get the current linemen in shape and transitioned to a whole different world without 5 step drops etc.

Can it be done quickly? sure...but anybody watching RRod's first year or Kelly's first 6 games can attest that it doesn't necessarily happen overnight either and a lot of kids transfer or get switched to other positions once the transition happens.

Weis likes at least one big TE who can block and catch the ball (Fasano, Reuland etc.)...I don't know if UF has one but they will soon. Weis will want a QB that is comfortable with 5-7 steps, making 2-3 reads and rarely running...UF may not have one of those either. Weis likes the 6-3 WR, Floyd, Stovall, Kumara...Kelly will use Floyd but the guys he recruited, Jones, riddick etc. are small and fast.

One thing I subscribe to is the average experience level of your team...Stanford benefits from having a lot of 4th and 5th year guys. One of Weis' issues was that his team was too young, he supplanted upper classmen with FR and So and then couldn't figure out why they didn't execute as well and got pushed around in the trenches. In general, 22 year old guys are better prepared than 18 year old guys. If Weis didn't learn from his ND experience and turns over the roster too much they can struggle. He didn't get dumb when he went to ND, but the offense was never really the schematic advantage, save the first Pitt game.

Doesn't have to be 6 years but RRod has already spent 3 of those years, if Weis had replaced him and done what he did at ND that would add up to 6 years of misery.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

I've heard that Mallett was gone to Arkansas the minute Mustain left for USC. Arkansas was his first choice.

Considering the ****hole that Carolina is, I really can't blame Luck. He was in for a David Carr level beatdown on that team. No coach, cheap owner, 28 free agents.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Switching offensive systems isn't the end of the world.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on how flexible the coach is (e.g. Brian Kelly is one of the more flexible offensive coaches you'll find, as he seems to be equally comfortable with a pure dropback passer as with a dual threat, even though he professes to prefer a dual threat) and what's on the roster. It doesn't look to me as though Michigan has a guy on the roster who can be a credible dropback player (but I suppose Robinson or QBForce might surprise me)—that means that any offensive coach who isn't comfortable with a dual threat QB is going to have to wait a year to get a dropback QB in and then another season or two to get him ready to win.

Charlie Weis sure as heck isn't running the Urban Meyer spread, and no one's acting like Florida's offense is a six year rebuilding project.
That's partly because Brantley is, as I recall, more of a dropback than a dual threat QB (making it particularly curious that Meyer recruited him).

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

block- if you want to be so upset with the timing, I guess I can't stop you. You make it sound SO bad that you don't want to be a fan anymore.

I honestly don't want players or coaches who are distracted by media. How that is so bad is beyond me.

We all knew that Michigan always said they were waiting until after the bowl game- how that answer gets muddled or confused by THEM is beyond me. Everything else was media created.

Your preception is different than mine, both of which are irrelevant, and neither of us have any clue what potential players are thinking. But, hey, it's your ulser. I don't give them money, so my opinion is useless.

I've already written off next year as amusemnet over winning- didn't matter who would coach.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

They could lose a home game to a Div I-AA school.

Oh wait....

Oh yeah, that's right they did... keep getting mileage out of that old bit. RR lost to those I-AA like teams-Purdue,Toledo, etc. (Minny could be included) which were "so much better" than that App St. team. At least they were a NC of their division the year before- and at least that LC Michigan team beat Tebow in his backyard to save some face.
