Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Someone thinks that Tim Brewster is a good enough coach that they're hiring him to be a head coach again!?!?!

Guess where they play their games? Jim Wacker field at Bobcat Stadium
School Colors? Maroon and Old Gold

Apparently Texas State is moving to the WAC in 2012.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

This time, I would belive it.

edit- watching the press conference- Brandon claims to make the decision last night, not before then, and seems pretty convincing.

Does he know that National Signing Day is in about a month and you can't d!ck around on your coaching decisions like you're replacing a district director at Domino's?

He was reminded of it by some of the reporters, but, yes. Apparently, they are holding off on some campus visits, even.

Yeah, I would have expected to have a replacement coach on hand to put ink to paper there before they gave word that Richrod was out.

For sure, that did not happen. Brandon made it clear that everyone is on the table, and nobody is off. Moreso- nobody has officially been contacted.

he had some funny things to say about Jim- more about there IS contact, on a regular basis, for years, for fun. I thought the press conference was pretty darned good, in terms of being realistic and not filling the press with a bunch of, well, filler.

Dear god, why not? The only defensible reason to wait this long is so that you (or your proxies) can make those kinds of communications.

In defense of the stadium name, in Wacker's four seasons there he was 42-8 and won two national titles.

Well, REAL quites from Harbagh are few and far between, except that he's spending this week thinking about the future. All real quotes I've sread say nothing about for or against any possible place to coach- much unlike what has been reported- or much like how Tuesday was reported in Ann Arbor.

Brandon wanted to fire the coach before hiring a new one. Unless it's one of the 3 favorites (Har.., Miles, Hoke), I think they are going to take their time finding the right one. And that's realtive, of course, since time is important. but I don't expect them to rush or be forced into hiring the next big name. last time UM tried that, it didn't turn out too well.

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Dave Brandon's not a dumb guy. The most important factor here is he did not hire Rich Rodriguez. That's why the patience argument holds no water. RR is not his guy and has not done enough to show he can turn this thing around. The timing? It's clear to me they wanted to wait till Jan. 1 for the buyout reason. Factor in the embarrassing performance against Miss State and this was a no brainer. The only problem I see, and it's a big one, is if Harbaugh does in fact say no, who is the best candidate? There has to be more out there than Les Miles and Brady Hoke. For the people saying Miles wouldn't leave LSU, the fans down there don't even like him.

I thought the CW was RichRod's scheme ripped everything up by the roots, so to go back on it after just 3 years would essentially doom Michigan to 6 down years?

OK by me. We need the wins.

I almost hate to quote you on this, but reading some of the AA.com articles and comments, but I'm not liking this "an instant answer isn't good enough" thing.

Brandon got a bad rap for not firing RR yesterday, and gets a bad rap for not having a coach in place before the firing, or not contacting anyone....

This may be the twitter universe, were instant answers are ok, this is a college FB team where UM is trying to make the right choices. IIRC, once the miles situation meandered into the obsurd, Martin rushed into RR- which was a bad idea.

OTOH, the hand picked Sweatervest wasn't confirmed until mid Jan. As far as I can tell, he's a pretty good coach, if not lacking in integrity.

I hope they take their time, and if any candidate asks for a quick response for whatever reason, the answer is no.

Unless you want another appearance coach like the one UM just fired.

Huh?

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Brandon's mistake isn't that he fired RR today instead of yesterday, it's that he fired RR today instead of end of November/beginning of December.

First, I'll withhold judgment until a new coach is hired.

Second, Brandon isn't taking heat just because he fired him now, but because of what he's saying.

Saying the process is just beginning now is the wrong answer. It's one thing to wait until today to pull the trigger, but then you'd better have some legwork done already in the coaching search. This, of course, was the whole presumption why he waited so long in the first place.

Brandon's failures aren't about the lack of a new coach, it's about the lack of communication about a new coach. It's one thing to play things close to the vest, but it's another to just let rumors spread like wildfire.

He needs to take control of the process and get it moving, or else the new coach is going to be in a very similar position that RR was in - with a poor recruiting class and lots of attrition that will make it hard to win games.

I want more Stanford Tree!

Ask and ye shall receive:

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VE1ic3kXmjo?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VE1ic3kXmjo?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Stanford's band has been banned from playing at halftime tonight

Edit: Goddammit, Gruden doesn't know jack about college football. Why must I suffer this again?

Nah I think with all the money they paid the Goo Goo Dolls they felt they were a better fit. :P What a show, two whole songs, and none of it was good stuff from the first album!

Nice catch by the Stanford center. 9 yards deep in the end zone.

Yeah betweeh Terrell not letting the punt go for the touchback and the right tackle not letting it drop that wad a bad sequence. Though it says a lot when you consider those plays gave VT 9 of their 12 total points.

I think I could have thrown that touchdown pass. Holy crap VT's defense has been picked apart in the second half

What a game for Coby Fleener! And it says something about the play calling when he's that open, since he's not exactly a speed demon.

So has their offense...

Because Shayne Skov is a beast!

WHAT THE HELL is Michele Tafoya doing?! That was the single most awkward postgame interview I've ever seen.

Yeah she had asked Harbaugh about his plans before the game, when he in no way wanted to discuss it, so I loved how he essentially blew her off after the game.

Well that was an awesome experience. We were in the Stanford corner and one of my signs (CHOKIE THE HOKIES) made it up on the jumbotron. The first half was a little touch and go, though it says something about where the program is now that up by 1 in the Orange Bowl can be considered underperforming. The defense was a tad tentative, and Luck seemed a little nervous and forced, and while he was getting time I don't think receivers were getting open. But whatever they did at halftime worked. The run game got awesome blocking and thus opened up the play-action, and the aforementioned Fleener was all over the place. After the game my friend and the guy behind him caught one of the oranges Luck threw into the stands, so we got to have a piece of ther orange which was awesome. What a fun way for just a great well-rounded and fun to watch team to end possibly our best season in history!

hopefully ND can scoop up a few disenchanted recruits that would be a good fit in South Bend

I agree that changing from spread to non-spread is going to set them back (assuming the new guy is non-spread). Linemen need different skills, you tend to have too many WR's, small RB's, few TE's on the roster...if the new guy is pro-set look for a few transfers in addition to the aforementioned recruit reversals

Re: College Football IV: The Hand over Fist Cash Grab Time, or Bowl Season for short.

Brandon's failures aren't about the lack of a new coach, it's about the lack of communication about a new coach. It's one thing to play things close to the vest, but it's another to just let rumors spread like wildfire.

What you and others are saying is that he should have been searching for a coach before the old one was gone. Before he had a real sit down with an employee and review all aspects of the job, be pre-determined that in all instances he will fire the coach, no matter what information comes up. If a top supporter comes up and says he will fit the bill for the current coach- there's no going back. Basically, knowing that the coach will be fired before anything else, including playing the last game and telling the coach.

Sorry- completely disagree. You can't search for a position when the position isn't even open.

What communication are you laking? He told you he's looking- do you NEED to know who he is talking to? You want to make sure all of the meida frenzy that is already going will jack up the price of the next coach? You want Harbaugh to be distracted for the Orange bowl since he was called, or Miles for whatever game he's playing?

As far as I can tell, he is taking control, and not letting emotion cloud the decision process. Unlike those who want a new coach named before the old one is fired.

This isn't an instant process. That worked out pathetcially bad the last time. This is supposed to be a coach's last job.
