Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Nielson?? Maybe, just depends on what he wants out of life, he has already once retired from coaching be the AD post at UMD, only to step back into that role when their coach left to go to Southern Illinois I believe. I do believe that his kids are mostly grown, just depends if he would want to leave the comforts of a pretty sweet gig there in Duluth, to meatgrinder that is the Big Ten.

Bob Nielson

I say he is closer to Maturi's position than Brewster's! :)

It's a rediculous jump from the NSIC to the Big 10 though....

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

I think the only thing as stupid as hiring a tight ends coach that had never been a coordinator would be hiring a high school coach. That's a joke for a Big Ten program.

Same with the UMD guy. No offense, but they "turned things around" because everyone else gave up on D-2 football.

Don't tell BigMrG:p

Anyway, Nielson isn't going anywhere. He quit being UMD's coach for awhile...to be the AD. He seems comfortable in a place where there isn't much pressure and he'll have a job for life if he wants it due to the National Title run and multiple conference titles and NCAA appearances during both of his tenures.

The Gophers needed to get rid of Mason, because he had taken us as far as he could (which is admittedly still better than most of the past 40 years). However, they swung and missed on this hire unless a miracle happens the rest of this season (It won't). It is certainly possible for the Gophers to compete at the same level as Wisconsin and Iowa. Wisconsin was awful and the stadium was half-full for 40 years before Alvarez was hired, and the Gophers have the facilities to compete again. It's not going happen until they finally make the right coaching hire though, and the current coach isn't it.

Well, True, UMD did benifit from a shift to a new conference in 2008 with UND, USD moving up to D1-AA, UNO going south to the MIAA, and Central Washington going back to try to hold the GNAC together for football. But they did face some pretty solid teams that year in the playoffs, and have done well to maintain themselves as a legit contender now from the NSIC. As much as it pains me to say it, you don't beat GVSU at home in the Playoffs by being just lucky. You gotta be pretty **** good to be that Lucky. Much like Appy State. ;)

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

I wouldn't be surprised if Vegas is looking at the USC-Minn game this way: USC will probably be winning by about 28 by the end of the 3rd, at which time they'll take their foot off the gas and allow the Gophers to make the score look somewhat respectable..
There is no way they took the foot off the gas. I just read that apparently Lane Kiffin was one of the finalists for the Gophers job and was beat out by Brewster, he was mad because at that point it would have been his first head coaching job. Apparently he's still holding a grudge over it. They might hit triple digits.

Except Kiffin isn't much better at coaching football than Brewster; 7-6 at Tennessee is less impressive than 6-7 at Minnesota ;)

At least Cuse is going in the right direction with Doug Marrone.

I still like the idea of Lucia replacing Brewster. :D

He was kind of a finalist...no one at the time thought he would get the job. Thankfully he didnt he would have pulled a Lou Holtz anyways.

He has no grudge to hold, so we didnt hire him because he went to a Bloomington HS and his dad is a great defensive coordinator...big deal! ;)

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Best coach available is Mike Leech. Plenty of baggage but could certainly turn the Goofs program around.

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

And in related news, the NCAA has announced a formal investigation of the South Carolina football program. It's just five years since the Gamecocks program under Lou Holtz was found guilty of five major and five minor violations in 2005.

I guess SEC still stands for Sure Everyone Cheats.

To be fair, Spurrier has run a clean ship wherever he has coached... I would hope that this is some crap left over from Holtz

Re: College Football II: The BCS hits the Fan

Agreed on Spurrier that, as best as one can tell, he's generally run a pretty clean ship to date.

In other news, turns out none of the 8 or more Tennessee players involved in a bar brawl in Knoxville that sent two people, including an off-duty cop, to the hospital, will be charged with anything. There you have it, law enforcement, SEC style.

Agreed. I just hope that in the next year or two he starts getting the few top recruits that are available in NY and then landing some of the top ones in NJ, PA, and Maryland.

There is no reason why Syracuse shouldn't be able to land the top NY recruits year in and year out. They have to make Syracuse the place that local kids still want to go and play again.

I don't know how well they'll translate to the D-I level but there are two kids out here in the Albany Region that I view as being able to play on Saturdays.

Zay Richardson and Josh Keyes. Two names to keep an eye on. Both running backs. The only thing holding Richardson back is his size. He's only 5'6, 160 pounds. Two weeks ago he had five carries for 297 yards and FIVE touchdowns.

There are two reasons: TV exposure and chances of competing for the national championship. Actually, there's probably a third reason. How is Syracuse ever going to compete with West Virginia and Louisville given the academic differences between them? There's a reason UNC isn't winning ACC football titles (and a lesson in what happens when they "try," see also Northwestern).

Note this is A Good Thing. College football has always had a wink and a nod towards "college."

That'd be awesome. Could turn Dinkytown into a giant pirate-themed adventure park.
