College Football 2022: “Here’s a twenty, bury two.”

Big Ten will be unveiling their new scheduling model today. Called “flex protect”, it’s going to allow between 1-3 protected games per school.

It will be interesting to see how important some of these rivalries are viewed as worth protecting by the schools. Do Michigan and Minnesota try to protect the Little Brown Jug? Just how important does the MSU-PSU game become? Did anyone reach out to try to make USC or UCLA a permanent rival?

Nebraska called UCLA I'm sure. Wouldn't be surprised if Northwestern wanted to get a few games out to Cali. Maryland and Rutgers just blocked their numbers.

Illinois/Purdue? When the f-ck did that become a rivalry? Illinois/Indiana is a bigger rivalry than that. Must be the manufactured close proximity rivalry.

Well, turns out there are significantly fewer rivalries than I would have expected. Only 11 total.

Illinois-Northwestern
Illinois-Purdue
Indiana-Purdue
Iowa-Minnesota
Iowa-Nebraska
Iowa-Wisconsin
Maryland-Rutgers
Michigan-Michigan State
Michigan-Ohio State
Minnesota-Wisconsin
UCLA-USC

Everyone is guaranteed to play each other twice in four years.

Ignoring the west, I must be missing something, but I only see Pedo as not having a rivalry game. Is that right?

Correct. They probably didn't want Maryland and Rutgers every year. Surprised they don't have at least one of OSU or MSU, but both of those schools already have Michigan so maybe they wanted to just keep it at one permanent. Plus this way they can rotate through as "two year rivals" faster among MSU/OSU/UM/Nebraska/USC.

And I just see them as the constant outsider, lol.

I never realized UI/PU were that close together. Shortest drive in the Big Ten behind MSU/UM. Well, I guess soon to be third now that USC/UCLA are coming in.

But what about the governors victory bell?!?!

But what about the governors victory bell?!?!

At least with the Land Grant Trophy the MSU/PSU game was being billed as a new end of season rivalry match-up. It really makes no sense why Minnesota decided out of nowhere they needed a trophy with Penn State.

USC and UCLA play for a trophy as well. Another victory bell, which makes three for the conference after Minnesota-Penn State and Nebraska's now non-conference trophy with Missouri. They already know how to be Big Ten better than Maryland and Rutgers who came in with no trophies, apparently just playing for pride all those year's on the East Coast with nothing to take home after a win.

Pretty sure that was mom and dad setting up a playdate to try to make new friends for the kid who just moved into town

Sorrt to burst your bubble but the Governor's bell thing doesn't seem more less arbitrary, and I doubt Minnesota created it on its own.

Mountain West tells SDSU that they did give an official resignation letter and that their request for an extension on the lesser exit fee will be denied. On the one hand, interesting that they're ready to kick SDSU so willingly, because presumably they would want them in the league if they don't get an invite to a P5 for upcoming media negotiations, and they'd be getting the exit fee if they do end up with an invite. On the other, they probably don't like that SDSU has been telling boosters for months now they're on their way out.

Just saw that LSU is vacating wins because of reasons.

How meaningless is that? Just changes some statistics in the whole scheme of things. Maybe they should be forced to return the ticket money of the fans where the games didn't mean anything. Michigan did that, too, and I also think it ends up being meaningless. Nobody who is a fan will say those wins weren't real- the "penalty" just changes the archives.

Things are not going well at Northwestern…

On Friday they announce Fitzgerald has been suspended for two weeks amid allegations of hazing within the program. Their report found that while he had no involvement, he should have been aware. Then on Saturday more information came out from the whistleblower and NU came out with a statement that they will be reassessing the situation.

As of today there are now reports of this hazing going back to at least 2007 and allegations of racism within the program.

And not just to limit it to the football program, today allegations came out against the baseball coach over sexism, racism, telling players not to seek treatment, and running someone much in the same way a player died at Rhode Island while he was there. How did the coach respond? “Maybe the players just aren’t good enough and are making excuses.”
