College Football 2021: Cash is King

And then there's the "tickets sold" rule (instead of "actual attendance")

Oh jesus, of course you're one of those pedants.

You do realize that everyone on the entire farking planet uses tickets sold to measure "paid attendance," right?

Ok fine, Montana and Montana State meet attendance requirements.

But I’m sure their fan bases and athletic departments are really itching to ditch their decades long rivalries and historical home for a spot in FBS and watch all the money they were told they’d get go to the SEC.

If anything is to happen it’s more likely the Power 5 conferences will jettison the other FBS schools, including North Dakota and your mythical “Western MAC”.

I do not see a P5/G5 split because the P5 schools still need their home games against G5 teams for easier wins. And G5 schools need those paydays to keep athletic departments. If payday games become unsustainable then you will see the split.

I put your jettison scenario equally likely to the "western MAC".

The P5 doesn't want to share money. They'd gladly keep it all.

TV money will absolutely drive a P5/G5 split, those cupcake games are terrible for ratings and, well C.R.E.A.M.

I'm one of those "pedants" who has read the NCAA Division I manual, specifically section 20.9.9.3, more specifically 20.9.9.3.1.1 "Actual Attendance" and 20.9.9.3.1.2 "Paid Attendance", and who can explain the subtle nuances and obvious loopholes of each. And more schools than you know use "Actual Attendance" because they easily make the 15k number with little effort (versus the extra accounting of tracking "Paid" and how they paid, i.e. students and student fees).

Reading for those opposed to Sominex: https://www.ncaapublications.com/pro...loads/D121.pdf <-- The Manual of Pedantic Nuance Volume DI.

Going into the conference schedules it looks much better for the B10 teams when their records are inflated by 2-3 wins. Iowa vs Penn State both teams are 5-0 going into their game. You must watch these two undefeated go head to head! The early games drive the hype. Plus people like wins. Doesn't matter where they come from.

Didn't expect Cincinnati to get the kiss of death on the first poll, but there it is. Based on Bama at #2, they are in even with a loss to Georgia in the title game- or at least they are over the Bearcats. With MSU and OSU over them- pretty much means a one loss B1G champ is over them, and even with UM behind Cincy- there's a likely out there if a miracle occurs. Oregon is there because OSU, so there's the out for their one loss. And I'll wager OU will also pass Cincy.

At this point, I very much hope Cincy goes undefeated, so that no matter what, it will force a major shake up in how this is done. This should crash down the whole myth that the committee even cares about G5 teams. (and it should keep Notre Dame out... ;)

FBS independents Liberty and New Mexico State plus FCS teams Sam Houston and Jacksonville State were all extended Conference USA invitations on Wednesday, sources confirmed to CBS Sports.
Conference USA is pushing hard to find an eighth member that would satisfy NCAA requirements to stay in the FBS, sources told CBS Sports.

I wonder who the eighth might be. I predict it'll be from south of the Mason-Dixon line.

I’m not sure how that helps NMSU. Their other sports seem to be ok in the WAC and they have a fairly regional schedule as an independent. This would increase travel and I can’t imagine the media rights from the new league will be all that great.

A conference (even one as spread out as that, 1800 miles to Liberty U) gives more stability than the constant scramble mode to find FBS games in October and November when everyone else is full in on conference games. And a conference gives a title to play for.

Their schedule this year is hodgepodge and definitely not low travel: https://nmstatesports.com/sports/football/schedule/2021

Oregon...pfffft. Beat a team 2 months ago and still getting dap for that. Have you seen the Pac 12 this year? Realtimerpi.com has them rated below the American Athletic and Mountain West Conferences. OOC record is below .500. Oregon's strength of schedule is ranked 162nd. Not impressed.

I agree, but WRT "the playoffs"- they are ranked over undefeated Cincinnati. This whole charade is just that, and seeing Bama at #2, it appears to me that it's more a tool for the SEC Network, aka ESPN, aka Disney. As it stands, Bama can lose to Georgia, and still be in. Even though the bottom of the SEC sucks as bad or worse than any other conference. T A&M got beat by a pretty lame UCLA, and a now lame Clemson, so they are far from a great team, but that does not matter to Bama- who they beat. How in the world A&M is that high with those losses is a mystery to me, and their other OCC teams are epic- New Mexico, Kent State, and Lamar are all top 10 teams, right?

This isn't about pandering to the other conferences- but to see the SEC get that much over Cincinnati is pretty telling.

fwiw Oregon beat FSU which is currently ranked and this link for SOS has Oregon at 32 and Cincinnati at 43, while this one has Oregon at 66 and Cincinnati at 94.

I've been following Cincy since the 2nd half of the Indiana game(was channel surfing)and I've watched a bunch of their games and they have an interesting team. I was under the impression that when the CFP started "running up the score" wasn't supposed to count in the bottom line and yet they state that Cincy barely beat Navy and looked sluggish against Tulane(both road games btw). Unfortunately nothing is going to change, playoff wise, until 2025 from what I understand.

SS - I know SOS is purely subjective but I like "Team Rankings" site. You had written FSU and I'm thinking when did they play Florida State but then I looked at their schedule And it was Fresno St in week 1.

James Madison leaving the Colonial Athletic Assoc for the Sun Belt Conf.
From SI:
JMU’s impending move led to CAA membership invoking a two-decade-old bylaw that banned the Dukes from championship competition. The only teams able to compete are football (where the CAA teams operate outside of league purview) and two whose championships are this week, field hockey and women’s soccer.

Everyone else at the best all-sports school in the conference is out, effective immediately. Men’s soccer, scheduled to host the league tournament next week, is out. Women’s volleyball, tied for the league lead at the moment, is out. Men’s and women’s basketball, which cannot reach the dream of an NCAA Tournament berth without the automatic bids that come with winning the conference tourney, are out. Women’s swimming, shooting for an unprecedented five-peat as league champ, is out. Three other league championships scheduled to be hosted at the school in Harrisonburg, Va., are out.
