College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

I don't really care who wins this final. I don't hate either team.

Obviously Duke is a team that a lot of people either love or hate, but they just don't fall into either category for me. Coach K has never seemed like a bad person to me (unlike Huggy, or Calipari).

Go Butler! they'll need to play alot better than yesterday to beat Duke.

Root for Butler!

Butler spent $347,108 on player expenses for its entire team. Duke spent $394,068 PER PLAYER.

Duke spends $67,820,336 on its athletics. Butler spends $10,595,162.

Duke spends $15,047,984 on men's basketball. Butler spends $1,803,345.

When you play at Duke, you get everything you could ever need or want. State of the art athletics facilities, academic support centers for basketball palyers only, complementary massages from Dick Vitale. Duke represents college sports gone insane. They are playing with a different set of rules than Butler.

I think I remember reading that Butler only made two dollars from their basketball program last year.

I'm rooting for Butler, but I hope that the success doesn't ruin other sports like it has at Northern Iowa. After UNI gave the basketball coach a raise, they announced the baseball program was going to be dropped to save money.

You realize I root for Minnesota in hockey right? It's a bit hypocritical of me to root for Butler based on finances. ;)

But to be fair, Vitale has two degrees in physical therapy and multiple chiropractic certs so they're good to go.

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Why do you dislike Duke? If it's because of the media attention they get, then you should dislike the media. Disliking Duke because the press fawns all over them is akin to saying a pretty girl "deserved it" when she gets raped. They had an easier road to the Final Four? That's an NCAA problem, not Duke. Is Coach K supposed to tell the NCAA selection committee "No, our bracket is too easy, let Kansas have it."

They run a clean program, win a lot of games and actually graduate their players - many of whom stay for four years as opposed to the hired guns others bring in for one season.

Yesterday ESPNCL showed the 1992 Duke-Kentucky game. Aside from being arguably the greatest college game ever played, two actions by Coach K stood out: While Pitino disappeared from the court and the Duke players were celebrating, Coach K went and consoled the Kentucky players. He actually picked one of them up and cradled him in his arms. Then he went to the radio booth for Kentucky and told all the Kentucky fans listening that their team played a great game. It was also legendary play-by-play man Cawood Ledford's last game and Coach K took time to thank him. What a jerk!

But people don't like Duke for whatever reason. So on Monday, go Butler.

Coach K is no saint- ask William Avery and his family.

Oh come on, like that is going to stay the same if Butler keeps up the run they have been on. They are going to dump a bunch of money into a program that has been one of the better ones in the country for a few years now. Like has already been said, look at what happened at UNI and they didn't have a chance to win it all.

Once again...where is the hatred for UNC why is it only Duke that gets everyone's panties in a bunch? Vitale loves UNC just as much as Duke, I am guessing they have a similar budget and get just as much press yet I don't remember the public outcry the last few times they won the title.

BTW I am a Duke fan cheering for Butler because I think it is the better story.

Who is a saint in big time Athletics, John Wooden? That was 40 years ago, who else?. Duke graduates its players, what else do you want?

John Wooden had his players bought and paid for. That Bruins dynasty was one long ride of NCAA violations.

:D

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

its the classic story. David and Goliath. big school. small school. big time program vs unknown. old guy vs young guy. rich vs poor. Cinderella. Hoosiers.

I just hope its not a Duke blow out.

Sometimes it's hard to understand anything that comes out of Walton's mouth.

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Anybody else hear the segment on espn radio this week where the guest discussed the coach k factor?...here was the theory: his influence in USA basketball and NCAA basketball is so strong that refs have to consider their jobs if they irritate him...he can can influence who gets picked to do college and national tournaments as well as regular season assignments.

There was no conclusion, just the explanation of why some people in basketball, besides biased fans, think there is some merit to the "Duke gets the key calls at the key time" theory.
