College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

It is amazing that Duke gets all the calls yet somehow this is the first time they made the Final Four in like 6 years. (unlike say Izzo who has made 6 of the last 12)

This stuff is as funny as the UND Conspiracy Theories!

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Anybody else hear the segment on espn radio this week where the guest discussed the coach k factor?...here was the theory: his influence in USA basketball and NCAA basketball is so strong that refs have to consider their jobs if they irritate him...he can can influence who gets picked to do college and national tournaments as well as regular season assignments.

There was no conclusion, just the explanation of why some people in basketball, besides biased fans, think there is some merit to the "Duke gets the key calls at the key time" theory.
When I see BU fans admit that same thing about Jack Parker and HE, I give that crap about Coach K some thought

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

I've always hated UNC more than Duke. I've never been a fan of Roy Williams and in when I was growing up they seemed to attract all the jersey popping bandwagon d-bag fans with no connection at all to the state, school, or program. They basically became the Yankees for a long stretch of time.

Did Coach Parker pick the refs for games like Coach K does in his USA basketball capacity.

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

In the last 9 years, Duke has been in the top 10 for free throws attempted 7 times.

No other school has been in the top 10 more then three times.

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Rumors? Walton basically came out and said it! :)

Walton was probably so stoned out of mind that he probably didn't know if he was getting paid or not. He just probably remembers getting lots of free weed and free hippy poonaie!

So your problem is with the refs...or do you expect Coach K to decline fouls?

Oh, that's right...it's all part of a huge conspiracy...that's why Duke wins the tournament every year.

Most basketball coaches spend the entire game screaming at the officials to call things. K is no stranger to that. Amazingly, it translates into more shots for his team..more often than other coaches probably because he is the most famous college coach outside of Wooden. He's pretty clearly the most powerful basketball coach in the United States.

And to anyone who has watched ACC basketball, the Tobacco Road conspiracy (UNC-Duke) is common knowledge.

But you can now tell me how this is all in my head, despite the facts and figures, and Crosby doesn't get the benefit either.

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Except the VAST WCHA CONSPIRACY is very much real Handy....you Gophers just refuse to admit it...publically.

I admit it fully. And it's tConspiracy. It covers all of college hockey.

And can ANYONE stop the UConn women's team? Not that I'm a fan, but that streak is amazing. And the old record is also amazing. Funny, same school.

Do you see black helicopters everywhere?

And MNS I admitted the Vast WCHA Conspiracy existed back in '02...I decline to admit that Brenthoven's fake conspiracy exists because the name sucks and the team hasn't won since he started spouting off about it ;)

I still dont get why no one hates Izzo, the dude has been in half of the last 12 Final Fours...HALF!

2003 ring a bell?:p

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

You starting posting in March 2003, I highly doubt the first things you were posting was BS rhetoric about fake Conspiracies but then again I dont much care either way. Plus it didnt take a Conspiracy for Thomas Vanek to be better than the rest of college hockey :p

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

Pick'em?, he owns them

So, do you think Parker gets calls just because of who he is? Does his status in hockey allow him to get the ref's ear easier than a 1st year coach? Does a HE ref ever think twice about calling calls like 'too many men' or 'knocking the net off'?

You can't believe in that stuff and say it can't happen in basketball. Only Parker is one of the top 6-8 most powerful coaches while K is the undisputed #1.

I asked if anybody else had heard the segment on ESPN...it was the first time I had ever heard an explanation for the disparity in fouls and key calls that wasn't just sour grapes.

Re: College Basketball 2009-10: The Road to the Road to Lucas Oil

So let me get this straight, Coach K has the power to rig everything basically and every other coach just sits by and lets it go? Yeah sorry but there is no way that would happen these coaches whine when another coach sends to many texts to a player yet some of you assume that they just bow at the alter of K.

The theory has come up a few times during the last week and it just makes no sense. People hate Duke, people deny Duke is any good but then when they prove they are they obviously are cheating or have an advantage. It can't be that they won the games Coach K had to pull some strings.

Let me put it another way, going into the tourny all the haters said Duke had no shot at the Final Four and was a weak #1 and yada yada yada but strangely the conspiracy theories were nowhere to be found. Where was the schmuck on ESPN talking about how Duke WOULD make it because Coach K has all the power? Nowhere to be found because it is all smoke and mirrors.

And still no one has answered the question, if Coach K is this powerful and can basically hand pick the refs for his games and get every call, why has he not had a team make the final Four since 2004? I mean the way it sounds he should have no problem cakewalking in since it is obvious he the most powerful man in basketball, the NCAA wants him to win as does ESPN so shouldn't they just always be there?

No, going into the tourney people said Duke was the weakest #1 seed yet somehow got the easiest path to the Final Four (weakest #2 seed in Nova, an unproven #3 Baylor which is still rocked by the scandal from a few years back, and a #4 Purdue team that was devestated by injuries). It was pretty much a national consensus that Duke got a cakewalk to Indy.

You put Kansas, Syracuse or Kentucky in that bracket, and they likely make the Final Four, too.

I don't think this is accurate, considering two of them lost to mid-major type teams and the 3rd lost to WVU who Duke just blew out. On paper it was easy, but we all know they don't play on paper, they play on TV.

This year was a weak year for #1 seeds across the board. There was no clear cut favorite like there is the women's game.

First off, both UNI and Butler were both grossly underseeded as midmajors tend to be - and in that respect, Duke got the only bracket without any major underseeded midmajor landmines (see UNI, Butler, Cornell - even Old Dominion and St. Mary's were on the other side, and could only face Duke in the Elite 8) awaiting them, just lots of middling major conference teams that probably were overseeded if anything.
