Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

Wicked, thanks!
I have never played hockey, never coached hockey, never anything except having been a fan in the stands.
So, I appreciate the background. I am always curious about recruiting, season scheduling, etc. It is one reason why, on Friday nights last home season, I attended every pre-game ‘Chalk Talk.’ I wish the Silver Puck organization would sponsor similar events in Hamilton, maybe on a monthly basis.

To use your own words, Shabby…

”I'll take it !”

I am headed to Lynah Rink tonight and tomorrow night for a HUGE match-up… North Dakota at Cornell. When Covid-19 hit, North Dakota and Cornell were 1-2 in the PWR, I believe. On Friday-Saturday, January 7-8, 2022, Cornell traveled to the Ralph Engelstad Arena and they swept North Dakota, 4-3 and 3-1, respectively. Naturally, that did not sit well in Grand Forks. This weekend is the tail-end of that reciprocal agreement. I am conflicted as the three teams of the 64 that I dislike are Michigan, North Dakota and Cornell. But I am a fan of Casey Jones. It should be a great weekend of college hockey in Ithaca, though I forecast a five-minute major penalty or two.

IOWA - sounds like a great weekend of live hockey for you. I'll be watching on ESPN+. Will you wear your Colgate sweater to the games? ;)

I have not decided on my apparel just yet, but I have a custom Frozen Four t-shirt (from Buffalo) that reads, ‘I still dislike Michigan, North Dakota and Cornell.’ Or I may wear my Omaha jersey with my Colgate cap. he he he. Enjoy the games on ESPN+!!

Well that was a fine how-do-you-do at Lynah last night. What could be in store tonight? Retribution?

Speaking of polls, I find it very amusing how Cornell men are always ranked very high preseason. Think they're #9 right now and haven't played yet. We'll find out how good they are this weekend hosting North Dakota for two.

Guess we found out ! Now number six.

Shabby, yeah, they looked really good this past weekend, especially Ian Shane. Both teams were their usual aggressive selves, with plenty of minor penalties (but no majors, as I expected).

On a separate subject, now that I have turned the calendar page to November, I looked at the two-game series at Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Penna. The starting times for the Tuesday-Wednesday, November 26-27, games are 6 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. There are plenty of reasonably-priced hotel rooms as the PSU students will be on break.

And now that I see Colgate’s November home schedule, I see that the Friday-Saturday, November 22-23, Princeton and Quinnipiac games, respectively, will offer free admission with a donation of canned food. While that is a wonderful gesture towards the Hamilton Food Cupboard (like Raiders as Waiters), I wonder if season ticket-holders receive any kind of rebate on those games. Surely that would be a ‘can of corn’ to accomplish by those in charge.

Ross Mitton is off to a great start for #5 Maine, the banger has five points and a GWG for the undefeated Black Bears !

We need a sweep this weekend, nothing less, a split and we're very mediocre this year in my opinion. Have to win at home.

We have almost always had good goaltending, like in football we always had a good running back, now we have neither. Browns are a "train running off the rails", Bruins are a .500 team at the moment. Oh...the Utica Comets were 0fer-October. My teams not doing well !

Just noticed that this will be Brown's first game tonight, and Yale has only played two games. Wonder why the Ivies do this ?

Don Vaughan and Jerry Quill were spotted at the Seven Oaks Golf Club restaurant pre-game. Stanley Cup winner Joe Watson is in the house.
Pre-game warm-up…
#1 Andrew Takacs led Colgate onto the ice.
#1 Lawton Zacher led Brown onto the ice.

Colgate penalty (tripping). 5-2 Colgate SOG to start. 5-3 SOG at end. Killed.

Seconds later, Brown penalty.
Wow. 10 seconds in, second Brown penalty!!
Pinged it off the pipe, but nothing.
First penalty killed, then…
Colgate’s Alex DiPaolo rifles one in. From Antonio Fernandez and Tommy Bergsland.
Colgate breakaway stopped.

Absolutely beautiful pass from Alex DiPaolo (and Brett Chorske). Max Nagle with the goal.

Two minutes remain in period and Brown’s Pineau scores. Takacs screened.

Colgate 13, Brown 4, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, Brown 1, score after one.

Zach and the Professor are here. And there must not be any parties on campus tonight as a ton of students are here. My section is full. Crazy!

Colgate’s Niko Rexine scores, from Owen Neuharth and Tommy Bergsland. Brown goalie getting little help from his defense.

Colgate penalty (hooking). Penalty killed, but Brown scores.

Colgate penalty (slashing). Colgate’s Jake Schneider with an unassisted short-handed goal. Penalty killed.

Colgate 24, Brown 10, SOG after two.
Colgate 4, Brown 2, score after two.

2:54 into the third and a slow bouncing puck by Brown eludes Takacs. 4-3.

Antonio Fernandez with a blast from the point. Pings off the pipe, but winds up behind the backing-up Brown goalie… a much-needed Colgate goal. From Nic Belpedio and Alex DiPaolo.

Empty Brown net with 2.5 minutes left.
Goalie back in for face-off.
Net empty again with 2 minutes left.
6 seconds left. Done.

Colgate 30, Brown 25, final SOG.
Colgate 5, Brown 3, final score.

Took care of business tonight.

Yale beat Cornell in a shootout tonight. They’ll be tough tomorrow.

Well, back home after an exciting 90-minute drive (separately, three Amish buggies and two deer on the roads tonight).

Another ugly win. Alex DiPaolo was interviewed between the second and third periods and he basically said, ‘we need to tighten up defensively.’ Instead, we let Brown back into the game before finishing them off. We were outshot 15-6 in the third period.

While three GA in 25 shots won’t raise Andrew Takacs’ Save Percentage, his Colgate record is now 5-4-0 (compared to Colton Point’s ‘Gate start of 2-5-2).

We have some talented forwards, shaky tending though. Takacs played a good third period after that third goal from center ice !

Yes Shabby, the Browns are a disaster and God only knows if I'll be above ground if and when they're decent again...yes, shaky third period, but credit Takacs after giving up silly third goal...Yale played a good game of rope-a-dope at Lynah and their young goalie is good...why do the Ivies start when they do? Because they are really, really stupid (and arrogant)...gotta get better on FOs...miss Ryan McGuire here...let's get a sweep tonight...will be facing a tough road trip next weekend at Dartmouth, at Harvard...
