Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

Nick Haas led the team out onto the ice tonight for the pre-game warmup. Henry Welsch is in goal for UMass Lowell.

i was AWOL yesterday as I logged in rinks #143 (BU’s Agganis Arena for an afternoon women’s game versus Maine) and #144 (BC’s Conte Forum for an evening men’s slaughter, with AIC being the sacrificial lamb).

UMass Lowell penalty (high-sticking). UML 4-1 SOG at start. Killed. UML 4-3 SOG at end.

Colgate 6, UMass Lowell 4, SOG after one.
Colgate 0, UMass Lowell 0, score after one.

Colgate had three or four good scoring opportunities and just couldn’t get it done.

Beautiful two-on-goalie resulted in Colgate goal by Daniel Panetta from Simon LaBelle and Dom Foglia.

Colgate penalty (hooking). UML PPG. Nick Anderson with the assist.

Colgate penalty (cross-checking). Play is under review. Five-minute major.

Colgate 16, UMass Lowell 16, SOG after two.
Colgate 1, UMass Lowell 1, score after two.

We did a good job killing half the penalty. We need to do it again on fast ice.

Daniel Panetta with a short-handed breakaway. Foiled. Then UMass Lowell scored with one minute left in the five-minute penalty.

UMass Lowell penalty (holding). Killed.

Empty ‘Gate net with one minute to play in regulation. Now 18 seconds left. Now 4 seconds left.

Colgate 25, UMass Lowell 23, final SOG.
UMass Lowell 2, Colgate 1, final score.

I thought we played well, but just couldn’t ‘put the biscuit in the basket’ as needed. Of course, if an ugly ‘win is a win’ then a pretty ‘loss is a loss’ (and a ‘sweep is a sweep’).

I met Jake Schneider’s father and it was great catching up with Nick Anderson’s parents again.

1-4-1 is pretty disappointing. I think it was at the Raiders as Waiters dinner when I chatted with Mike Harder. I said that I had planned on going to the UConn games and the UMass Lowell games (and, of course, the Sacred Heart home games), but that I wasn’t that excited about the RIT games. He seemed surprised and I couldn’t exactly give him a reason for my reluctance. Thinking more about it, it is just my feeling that we tend to go to the RIT’s and Niagara’s of the world and we (p)lay down and we lose. And that’s not to belittle RIT, as they are one of only three Colgate opponents this year that were in last year’s NCAA tournament (of which we didn’t qualify).

Penalties beat us both night. Both UML goals were powerplays last night and I think two more friday night. Last night's game was very even, we're not as bad as our record.

The above article on the ECAC vis-a-vis out-of-conference opponents is timely...since the beginning of last year we are 4-11-3 against o-o-c teams (and with a schedule that hasn't been that demanding)...when was the last time MIH beat a highly-ranked non-conference team? Perhaps at the beginning of the 2014-15 season when we split on the road against St. Cloud State? Last year's 4-4 tie against Maine on the road would probably qualify if we haven't blown a 3-goal lead...HAS to bet better if we ever want to at least compete in the Pairwise...not in panic mode yet but too many stupid penalties taken with a needed improvement on penalty kill...Browns done, Indians (Guardians) done but game, MIH at 1-4-1...tough start to the fall season for TheCoat...

We had a 0% success rate on the penalty kill, both Friday AND Saturday. Yes, you read right- ZERO percent.

The stat sheet for both games may say Lowell went 2 for 3 on the PP both nights, but that's only because we committed a 5 minute major penalty in each game, and a PPG doesn't end those PKs. Every time Lowell went on the power play, they scored.

We only took 3 total penalties on Friday, and only took 2 total penalties on Saturday. And the major PKs were alleviated with a concurrent Lowell penalty on Friday and the 2nd intermission on Saturday. But they still got PPGs on the major power plays.

This is a serious cause for concern. If you can't survive 2 minutes of being shorthanded, you're not going to win games.

Am watching Colgate at RIT on FloHockey, a sister PPV network to FloRacing, in Owego, N.Y., tonight.
Nick Haas in goal for Colgate. Czech Jakub "Kooba" Krbecek in goal for Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
Colgate 7-0 SOG.
RIT penalty. Killed.
Tiger announcers are 'homers.'
Colgate 9-1 SOG.
Colgate women up 5-1 on Maine in the second.
Crowd is over 3,100, according to homers.
RIT's Tanner Andrew scores before crashing into the net. 12-3 SOG Colgate. 1-0 score RIT.
Seconds later, RIT's Evan Miller alone in front of Haas. 12-4 SOG Colgate. 2-0 score RIT.

Seconds later, Colgate two-on-one, first-year player Max Nagel scores, unassisted! 2-1 RIT score.
Apparently matching penalties.
Getting chippy.
Two minutes left in the period... Colgate takes the face-off... Nic Belpedio (or Belipedo as the announcers repeatedly call him) scores! From Ryan Sullivan and Alex DiPaolo. 2-2 tie.
"Wayne Wilson takes some notes."

RIT 14, Colgate 12, face-offs after one.
Colgate 15, RIT 8, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, RIT 2, score after one.

Colgate women now lead Maine, 6-1.

35 seconds into second period... Brett Chorske scores into a near empty net. Brett then taunts the 'corner crew.'

Seconds later... RIT ties it up off a skate. Under video review after Mike Harder challenges. Good goal by Simon Isabelle.

Colgate penalty (closing his hand on the puck). Killed.

RIT penalty (holding). Killed.
RIT's Adam Jeffery scores, unassisted. 4 goals on 11 shots.
Minutes later, Max Nagel scores again from nearly the blue line. Actually, it was tipped in by Alex DiPaolo.

Minutes later, Ben Raymond left alone in front of the net. 5-4 Colgate.

RIT penalty, despite the fans and the announcers not liking it ("classic make-up call"). Killed.

Colgate 25, RIT 15, SOG after two (estimated).
Colgate 5, RIT, 4, score after two.

Goaltender change for Colgate... Andrew Takacs now in goal.

RIT penalty (elbowing). "Who made the call is who we have the problem with."
"And, of course, Colgate is going to over-react."
Killed.

38-21 SOG Colgate.
5:22 remaining and RIT penalty (roughing). Killed.

Two minutes left... Empty RIT net.

Colgate 38, RIT 24, final SOG.
Colgate 5, RIT 4, final score.

On the women's side, Colgate 8, Maine 3, final score.

Good comeback win last night. And 3 frosh getting points, Nagel with a goal and 2 assists. Good sign going forward.

I am watching again tonight on FloHockey from Wilkes-Barre, Penna.
Andrew Takacs is in goal for Colgate tonight.
Trent Burnham is in goal for RIT tonight.

Colgate penalty (holding). RIT's Allen scores a PPG.
Seconds later, Colgate's Brett Chorske scores on a goalie rebound. From Max Nagel and Alex DiPaolo.

RIT penalty. Killed.
Colgate SOG lead, 7-3, a little past halfway through the first.

Colgate penalty (tripping). Killed.
RIT penalty (holding) with two minutes left in the period.
Daniel Panetta with the PPG after the RIT goalie lost his stick. From Brett Chorske and Michael Neumeier.

Colgate 12, RIT 9, faceoffs after one.
Colgate 12, RIT 6, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, RIT 1, score after one.

Colgate penalty (cross-checking). Isabelle scores the PPG for RIT with seven seconds left in the penalty.

1:12 to go in the period and another Colgate penalty (slashing).
RIT penalty (interference).
Now getting chippy.

Colgate 18, RIT 18, faceoffs after two.
Colgate 19, RIT 15, shots after two.
Colgate 2, RIT 2, score after two.

Colgate's Brett Chorske scores 18 seconds into the period. 4-on-4.
Back to full strength and RIT's Andrew scores. Tied again, 3-3.
Ryan Sullivan shoots, Burnham stops the puck, but it falls down and Colgate's Jack Brandt puts it in. From Sullivan.

Colgate 2-on-goalie, but Burnham with the save.

3 minutes remaining and RIT takes a penalty (high-sticking). Killed.
36 seconds left, RIT goalie goes to bench.
5.5 seconds remaining, Colgate takes a penalty.
Colgate wins, 4-3!! And sweeps!!

RIT 30, Colgate 28, final faceoffs.
Colgate 31, RIT 23, final SOG.
Colgate 4, RIT 3, final score.

I give 'Gate grief for trying to sit on one-goal leads in the third period and just dumping the puck out of our zone, but they definitely did not do that tonight. They stayed aggressive.

We also helped ourselves (and ECAC Hockey) in PWR by sweeping a non-conference opponent this weekend.

I was happy with how we played last night, but we made too many mistakes. I mean the second goal, where was any defenseman in front of the goal. But ultimatelywe played better and deserved the win. It is soooo funny how RIT tries to mimic Cornell. Almost EVERY cheer they had was a direct steal from Lynah

Cant lose tonight

Someone needs to explain to me why anyone looks at polls at any time during the year. Polls mean nothing. Not coaches’ polls. Not media polls. It is all about PairWise Ranking (PWR) from day one. It is the only thing that matters, from October 1st on.

Secondarily, with Colgate off this coming weekend, will one or more of the coaching staff go to Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y., to personally scout ECAC Hockey rival Cornell (against perennial powerhouse North Dakota)? I would hope and trust that someone would do so. Films are nice. PPV hockey is nice. But there is nothing equal to being there, in-person, to see an upcoming opposing team. I understand that an ‘off weekend’ is treasured, but there will be plenty of those after the NCAA Frozen Four (or the NCAA Tournament, or the ECAC Hockey Tournament).

Speaking of polls, I find it very amusing how Cornell men are always ranked very high preseason. Think they're #9 right now and haven't played yet. We'll find out how good they are this weekend hosting North Dakota for two.

Hi Iowa, hope you are well. Also, I hope folks don't mind me stopping in from time to time ....as I am a fan of Gate hockey and see a few games in person every season... (except when they play RPI...ha ha). I am SURE that Gate will scout one of the Cornell games...no doubt.

That said, "Off" weeks are really more about getting rested and healed up...they'll certainly be practicing regularly. The staff will use the time to work on aspects of play that they want to improve or correct. Also, For the coaches, it's an opportunity to go on the road to see some of the kids you are recruiting play. I'd be willing to guess that one and quite possibly two coaches are on the road --be it Ontario or B.C....with one staying local to run the practices and monitor the players nursing injuries, treatments, etc. Just an FYI of a little behind the scenes ( as has been explained to me by other coaches in the league over the years!)
