Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

IOWA - some friends and I are going to the 5:30 seating. Steve - this is a fundraiser for the Hamilton Food Cupboard. The team will be waiters, bartenders and cooks. All of their tips will go directly to the Food Cupboard. Season ticket holders were notified.

Well based on the preseason review of UConn on CHN they lost their best goal scorer to Minnesota and had a down year last year. We definitely need to get at least a win out there to start the season. 0-2 to a not great UConn team would hurt early. Maybe we get a win and a tie or two wins. Go Gate and for those going enjoy the weekend.

Happy opening night everyone!

I'll be making the trip out to Storrs for tomorrow's game. I get to add another hockey rink to my "rinks visited" list!

Andrew Takacs (#1) led ‘Gate players out onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warm-up. UConn goalie #30 (Tyler Muszelik) did the same for the home team. Nick Haas (#30) is also dressed for Colgate.

UConn’s Jake Percival scored on UConn’s 8th shot. Colgate has one SOG so far.

Colgate takes first penalty. Getting chippy ten minutes in. Killed.

Colgate Score by Ryan Spinale. Unassisted. Rifled it.

UConn 13, Colgate 5, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, UConn 1, score after one.

Defense needs to tighten up, bigly.

UConn penalty. Killed.

UConn goal. Challenged by coach Harder. Good goal. 16-7 SOG.

Colgate penalty. PPG by UConn.

Another Colgate penalty. Killed.

Another Colgate penalty. Killed.

UConn penalty.

UConn 28, Colgate 14, SOG after two.
UConn 3, Colgate 1, score after two.

UConn penalty killed. Then UConn scored at even strength.

UConn penalty. Killed.

Colgate’s Antonio Fernandez scored. Unassisted.

UConn 38, Colgate 23, final SOG.
UConn 4, Colgate 2, final score.

The good news is that the coaches won’t be struggling with trying to find aspects of the game which need improvement this coming week.

The bad news is that we are no longer tied for PairWise Ranking #1 in the country. Well, it was fun while it lasted.

Watched the game on ESPN+ last night. Not the start we all wanted. We were outplayed at times but we didn’t quit, scoring to make it 4-2 late in the 3rd then pulling the goalie. We also pulled the goalie while down 4-1 on a power play. Even though we didn’t get the extra attacker goals we didn’t give up the empty netters. Both of our goals were scored by defensemen, and both my new additions to the team this season.

Of course, every game counts in the Pairwise, so a win tonight will certainly help there.

Nick Haas led ‘Gate out tonight for the pre-game warm-up, as did Tyler Muszelik (again) for UConn. Andrew Takacs is also dressed for Colgate.

I watched Penn State women take down UConn this afternoon, 4-2. Colgate women defeated Minnesota - Duluth in Hamilton, N.Y., 3-2.

These non-conference games are not only important for us, they are important for all of ECAC Hockey with regard to PWR.

UConn penalty. Killed.
seconds later, Colgate penalty. Killed.

Colgate score!! Another first year player… Simone Dadie!!

Colgate 14, UConn 13, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, UConn 0, score after one.

A much faster-paced game tonight, by both teams.

UConn score. Over Haas and in.
We are playing whack-a-mole this period and they are playing hockey.

UConn scored a beautiful second goal. Well-played.

And their third goal was equally well-played.

UConn penalty. Colgate pinged one off the pipes, but not in. Killed.

Chorske and Sullivan have had good chances, but right into the chest of their goalie.

Pinged it off the pipes again. Dang!

UConn 23, Colgate 22, SOG after two.
UConn 3, Colgate 1, score after two.

It is going to take a Herculean effort to climb out of this hole (which we dug ourselves).

Haas beaten on a breakaway. 4-1.
seconds later, he was beaten again.

And then Nick Belpedio scores for Colgate.

UConn penalty. Haas pulled. UConn ENG.

UConn penalty. Killed.

UConn penalty with 20 seconds left.

UConn 44, Colgate 35, final SOG.
UConn 6, Colgate 2, final score.

This weekend, we have seen the advantages of having free-wheeling, offensive-minded defensemen, and the disadvantages.

Sorry about this weekend. D-men need to step up.

Off subject: Shabby, I can't write on Tap-A-Talk. An ad asking for $$$ keeps appearing and can't be deleted. What's the matter over there?

Andrew Takacs (#1) led ‘Gate players out onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warm-up. Sacred Heart goalie #39 (Cullen DeYoung) did the same for the visiting team. Nick Haas (#30) and Jack Olson (#35) are also dressed for Colgate.

Sacred Heart penalty (hooking). Killed.

We are again giving up the puck in our own end.

Colgate goal… Jake Schneider from Tommy Bergsland and Antonio Fernandez. Beautifully set-up goal.

Another ‘Gate goal… Alex DiPaolo from Nic Belpedio.

24 seconds left in period… Colgate’s Simone Dadie scores from Nico Rexine.

Colgate 15, Sacred Heart 8, SOG after one.
Colgate 3, Sacred Heart 0, score after one.

Andrew Takacs made some great saves, too.

Well, seconds into the second period, Sacred Heart scores.

Colgate penalty (boarding) and Sacred Heart scores on the PP.

Sacred Heart penalty (holding). Killed.

And Sacred Heart tied it up.

Sacred Heart penalty (tripping). Daniel Panetta with the PPG from Brett Chorske.

No matter how this one ends, it is a wild one. Six minutes left in the second period, Colgate leads 21-19 in SOG and 4-3 in the score. Getting chippy.

Wow!! Colgate’s Michael Neumeier rifled one from the point and it goes in. Sacred Heart’s goalie never saw it.

Sacred Heart scored, but likely to be reviewed for high stick. Colgate loses the challenge and it is a goal.

Colgate 24, Sacred Heart 21, SOG after two.
Colgate 5, Sacred Heart 4, score after two.

Random thoughts… The Colgate pep band is in the house tonight. Did a great job with the national anthem. For the record, we miss the spirit of Nick Anderson’s mother (and Ross Mitton’s father). And Sacred Heart’s Felix Trudeau is wicked talented. When he is on the ice, their tempo is upped a notch. Linesman Taggart seems to know Max Elberty and Mike Harder on our bench. Chatted pre-game.

Sacred Heart with an unassisted goal. 5-5 score with twelve minutes left. Not pretty.

Colgate 30, Sacred Heart 26, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 5, Sacred Heart 5, score after regulation.

Going to 3-on-3 OT.

Daniel Panetta scores with 36 seconds left in OT, from Tommy Bergsland and Simon LaBelle.

Colgate 31, Sacred Heart 26, SOG final.
Colgate 6, Sacred Heart 5, score final.

It was good to be back at the Class of 1965 Arena tonight and seeing Zach, Red and the Professor amongst others. ‘A Win is A Win,’ I guess, but it wasn’t pretty and it could easily have gone the other way. Maybe this is just our new style of play (seemingly less disciplined than in decades past) and I am just slow to adjust. It certainly is exciting (read that ‘wild’) to watch. We’ll see what Saturday brings…

You're right about a wins a win ! 0-3 would have been an abysmal start. Still worried about our goaltending !

Not too worried about style points right now. It’s a win at home. And our freshmen/transfers have been contributing offensively. Good to see.
To your point Shabby maybe Gylander covered up for some sloppy defense last year.

Nick Haas (#30) led ‘Gate players out onto the ice for today’s pre-game warm-up. Sacred Heart goalie #39 (Cullen DeYoung) did the same for the visiting team, again. Andrew Takacs (#1) and Jack Olson (#35) are also dressed for Colgate.

Sacred Heart players are not afraid to block shots.

Six minutes in, Ben Raymond makes a spectacular solo effort to score, end to end. Alex DiPaolo with the assist.

Colgate penalty. Killed.

Colgate 9, Sacred Heart 7, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, Sacred Heart 0, score after one.

Colgate penalty (cross-checking). Killed.

In the last twelve minutes of play, we have had four golden opportunities to score. On two of ‘em, we tried one trick too many, IMO. Sometimes you just need to shoot it on net yourself.

Getting chippy again.

Sacred Heart goal when ‘Gate gave it right to him (alone) right in front of Haas. I sincerely hope that one isn’t the difference in this game.

Sacred Heart goal. Likely to be reviewed (‘as to whether it actually crossed the goal line or not’). But, again, during that shift, we gave up the puck in our own end. There is getting to be a pattern here. No goal.

And a good Sacred Heart goal.
And another Sacred Heart goal; Haas being totally screened on that one. Quebec’s Felix Trudeau with the goal (see last night’s comment).

Colgate’s Antonio Fernandez scored a similar goal (totally screened) from the point in the last minute of the period.

Sacred Heart 19, Colgate 18, SOG after two.
Sacred Heart 3, Colgate 2, score after two.

Sacred Heart penalty (high sticking). Killed.

Colgate’s Brett Mercer with a beautifully set-up goal from Ryan Sullivan and Max Nagel.

Seconds later, we pinged it off the pipe. Maybe we are showing a sense of urgency here in the third. And pinged it again.

Sacred Heart penalty (holding) to the young man from Grinnell, Iowa. Killed.

Colgate tried too many men on the ice in order to win, but we got caught and penalized. Killed.

Headed to OT, again.

Colgate 30, Sacred Heart 23, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 3, Sacred Heart 3, score after regulation.

NCAA and I recognize this game as a tie.

Colgate 32, Sacred Heart 26, after OT.
Colgate 3, Sacred Heart 3, after OT.

Well, one positive is that we haven’t lost at home yet this season, which is a stark contrast to Mike Harder’s coaching start at ‘Gate. Another is that, tonight, we were the team to come back and force the overtime.

On a personal note, it was fun to visit with Zachary, Red, the Professor and golfer R. Braden Houston. And the early game in Hamilton allowed me to drive 90 minutes home and still see Notre Dame vs. Clarkson on ESPN+. It will be an early night so tomorrow I can drive to BGSU in Bowling Green, Ohio, for an exhibition game against Simon Fraser, Canada’s only school in the NCAA.
