Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

After we jumped to a 7-1 lead Concordia got three late goals to make it a 7-4 victory for the Raiders. Three PP goals and a shorthanded goal, and still without two of our best forwards. All three goalies played one period each.

I was pleased with the goalie rotation.

I was also blown away (again) by John McGraw’s pre-game research, this time for an exhibition game against a Canadian university. Crazy!

Lastly, Friday’s home game has now been pushed back half an hour, with puck-drop at 7:30 p.m.

I forgot that we went down to Long Island last season for our first two meetings against LIU.
We lost both games, 3-2 in OT.
Goalies Carter Gylander and Nick Haas played in the January 12-13, 2024, games, respectively.
Noah Rupprecht played both games in goal for LIU, and he is 6-3-0 this season for them.
Simon Labelle and Alex DiPaolo scored for us on Friday, while Daniel Panetta and Ethan Manderville turned the trick on Saturday.
This weekend, then, is the tail end of this non-conference reciprocal agreement.

I can't seem to help myself...

this week's ECAC Hockey PairWise Ranking (PWR) report for the 64 NCAA D-1 MIH teams as we head into our final non-conference series...

(none in the 'top 16,' which just happens to be the number of slots in the NCAA tournament),

17 - Quinnipiac*, 18 - Clarkson, 24 - Dartmouth, 27 - Cornell*, 32 - Princeton,

34 - Colgate, 34 - Union, 48 - Renssalaer,

50 - Harvard, 52 - Brown, 53 - Yale, 57 - Saint Lawrence.

And PWR report for our non-conference opponents this year...

8 - UMass Lowell, 15 - Connecticut,

20 - LIU, 31 - Penn State,

39 - Sacred Heart,

62 - RIT*.

Asterisk (*) indicates 16-team NCAA Tournament participant in 2024.

And, yes, I realize that ECAC Hockey will have (at least) one team in the NCAA tournament via the ECAC provisional.

But major props to UMass Lowell (UML) and UConn, neither of which made the NCAA tourney last year and neither of whom could we beat this year.

And, as Shabby says... LIU is going to be tough this weekend.

My thoughts after driving 90 minutes home (and seeing four separate deer crossings)...

As odd as it sounds, I thought tonight's 2-1 win over LIU was as satisfying as any win this season. Why?

Colgate played three solid periods of hockey.

There were no superstars tonight; in fact, my guys Brett Chorske and Antonio Fernandez did not have career nights by any means.

By the same token, nobody stunk up the rink either. We honestly played as one cohesive unit all night.

My guy Andrew Takacs paid for his mistake, then made key saves down the home stretch to preserve the win.

The defense kept LIU to under 30 SOG. We never took a 'too many men on the ice' penalty.

We didn't just try to sit on our one-goal lead in the third period. And, at one point, the concession stands offered free hot chocolate (while supplies lasted).

As "Red" aptly pointed out between periods, the refs let the players play tonight (on both sides). It got chippy, but never crazy.

Of course, this was just night one of two. We need to do the same 'morrow. Sweep at home. Even our record against Brett Riley's LIU.

Finally, from purely a college hockey fan's perspective, tonight's game was very enjoyable to watch. Pretty evenly matched. 27-24 SOG. 2-1 score. It could have gone either way in the third period. And it almost went the other way. One can't ask for much more. Well, maybe free coffee.

IOWA - I always look forward to your game recaps! Nice, gritty win by the good guys! Wonderful to see Panetta back in the lineup. How many broken sticks last night? Go 'gate!!

Andrew Takacs led Colgate onto the ice for the pre-game warm-up.
Ty Outen did the same for LIU, which is a change from last night (and last season).

9:52 into the first period… first shot on goal (by Colgate). Crazy!

Colgate penalty (holding). 2-1 LIU SOG going into penalty. 5-1 LIU SOG coming out. Killed.

LIU penalty (check from behind). Challenged for 5-minute penalty. Unsuccessful. 5-4 LIU SOG going in. 7-6 Colgate SOG coming out. Killed.

19:29 Michael Neumeier scores for Colgate. Unassisted!!

Colgate 5-minute major penalty at the end of the period. Under review. 5-minute major (check from behind).

Colgate 9, LIU 6, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, LIU 0, score after one.

5-minute penalty killed. 11-8 Colgate SOG.

Another Colgate penalty (tripping). 2-minutes. Officials reviewing for possible major penalty. Stays as two minutes. 11-11 SOG.
Killed. 13-11 LIU SOG after penalty.

Colgate pinged it off the pipe.

LIU 16, Colgate 12, SOG after two.
Colgate 1, LIU 0, score after two.

Beautiful Colgate goal by Ben Raymond from Max Nagel early in the third period.

LIU penalty (hooking). Colgate pinged it off the pipe. Killed. But LIU takes another penalty (tripping). And Colgate (Takacs) takes a penalty (holding). Both penalties Killed.

Colgate penalty (face-off violation) with 5 minutes remaining in regulation. Killed.

Colgate ENG scored by Nico Rexine.

Less than one minute left and LIU scores.

LIU net empty.

Game over!!

LIU 29, Colgate 19, final SOG.
Colgate 3, LIU 1, final score.

Tonight's 90-minute drive home saw no deer, but it felt like Christmas Eve with gently falling snow from Hamilton to Owego via Whitney Point.
The crazy thing was that I had already unwrapped my Christmas presents... 2-1 last night and 3-1 tonight (over LIU).
And Christmas Day got even better for me upon receiving news that Sacred Heart had taken down Cornell, 4-2, after tying last night, 1-1.
Merry Christmas, indeed.

Magoo, I totally agree with you... Andrew Takacs is gaining confidence by the minute.
To my way of thinking, he totally deserved the shutout. He made some incredible saves tonight. But it is a 60-minute game, not a 59-minute one, and I fully realize that fact.

Tonight was a crazy game, thanks to the many penalties by both teams. I don't ever remember, in the last eight years, Colgate fans booing the referees like they did tonight. And it wasn't just "Red." he he he

If I was Mike Harder, Zach Badalamenti, Anthony Walsh and/or Chris Nell (and even Max Elberty), I would be feeling really good about my hockey team tonight (and this weekend).
Goal-Tending was there. Penalty-Killing was there. Even-Strength Scoring was there.
Let's work on Shots-On-Goal (SOG) and PowerPlay Goals (PPG) and we're totally there. he he he

Tonight, we are PairWise Ranked (PWR) #29, which is the same as Cornell (without the entitlement).
From here on out, it is all (about) ECAC Hockey. How best can we position ourselves for the ECAC Hockey Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y., in March?
I have my tickets purchased for Quinnipiac on Friday night, Princeton on Saturday night (and even the Colgate in Princeton pre-game social on Saturday afternoon).
I have also purchased my tickets (and accommodations) for the Lake Placid ECAC Tournament (with Clarkson Doug) and the Saint Louis NCAA Frozen Four (with Alaska Mike, Clarkson Doug and Dartmouth Doug).

Agree with all said, Takacs has really surprised me ! Great day yesterday, girls beat Cornell, Bruins beat Florida in OT.

I know that I am not offering free gold, but it dawned on me last night that I won’t make our next home game against Dartmouth, so if anyone would like a free ticket to the game, just email me at iowabasedtraveler at yahoo dot com with your postal address and I will put it in the mail. Offer only valid while supplies (i.e. - the one ticket) last.

Tonight's take...
ECAC Hockey teams have played anywhere from 8 conference games to 11.
3 points are the max offered per game.
Therefore, here are the current standings with games-in-hand possibilities (potential points after 11 games)...

Quinnipiac, 11 games played, 24 points.
Clarkson, 8 games played, 18 points, potential = 27 points.
Union, 10 games played, 18 points, potential = 21 points.
Colgate, 8 games played, 17 points, potential = 26 points.
Dartmouth, 9 games played, 16 points, potential = 22 points.
Harvard, 10 games played, 15 points, potential = 18 points.
Rensselaer, 10 games played, 12 points, potential = 15 points.
Cornell, 8 games played, 11 points, potential = 20 points.
Yale, 10 games played, 11 points, potential = 14 points.
Princeton, 10 games played, 11 points, potential = 14 points.
Saint Lawrence, 8 games played, 8 points, potential = 17 points.
Brown, 10 games played, 7 points, potential = 10 points.

Bottom line?
If Clarkson and Colgate take full advantage of their games-in-hand, they could be ahead of Quinnipiac in the ECAC standings after each has played 11 games.
Colgate's next opponent?
Quinnipiac.
HUGE impact game.

So nice to see Andrew Takas in the top 5 nationwide goalies after his stellar performance last weekend. Also wonderful to see that Michael Neumeier was given ECAC defender of the week for his stellar play! Go ‘gate!!
