Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

GreenCoat… truer words have never been typed on this thread than what you just wrote.

MarkEagle… did you see that Brown knocked off Merrimack tonight at Merrimack? he he he

Huge win. We own tiebreakers with Dartmouth and Cornell.

#22 in pairwise. Let’s keep it going tomorrow.

I don’t care what their record is - Harvard always worries me.

Wow!! HUGE win is right!!
Clarkson also scored a huge win, as we both fulfill ECAC games-in-hand on Quinnipiac this weekend.
I assume Andrew Takacs was in goal.

I had never been to the Harvard at Cornell rivalry game, and I decided this was the year.
While the atmosphere was over-the-top with the jam-packed crowd, I think I was the only one cheering for Harvard. Seriously.
And, yes, they still throw fish on the ice, clean 'em (up) and then announce that throwing anything on the ice is strictly prohibited.

The final score was Cornell 4, Harvard 1. It is hard to believe, but the GWG was scored 83 seconds into the game!
Aku Koskenvuo was in goal for the Crimson and Ian Shane was in goal for the Big Red.
Ian played well, but he didn't stand on his head. Neither did Cornell, but they didn't have to do so against a struggling Harvard.

Well, I am looking forward to getting back to the Class of 1965 Arena tomorrow. Harvard-Cornell was fun, but I don't need to do it again.

What I like so much about this team is not only are they winning but the Harder style of hockey is so much more watchable.

Keep it going tomorrow night. Agree that Harvard is always dangerous. Not the best record but a loaded roster.

The scores are all final tonight, so here are selected PairWise Rankings (PWR) for the 64 NCAA MIH programs looking towards 16-team NCAA tournament...

1-BC, 2-Michigan State, 3-Minnesota, 4-Western Michigan, 5-Maine (with Ross Mitton), 6-Connecticut, 6-Providence, 8-BU,
9-Denver, 10-ASU, 11-Ohio State, 12-UMass Lowell (with Nick Anderson & Pierson Brandon), 13-Michigan, 14-Quinnipiac, 15-Wisconsin, 16-Minnesota State,

19-Cornell, 19-Northeastern (with Ryan McGuire), 22-Colgate, 25-Dartmouth, 26-Clarkson,
39-Union, 42-Harvard, 43-Princeton, 46-Brown,
50-RPI, 52-Yale, 60-Saint Lawrence.

As for the 12-team ECAC Hockey...

Quinnipiac-28 points in 13 games, Clarkson-24 points in 11 games, Colgate-23 points in 11 games, Dartmouth-22 points in 12 games,
Union-21 points in 12 games, Cornell-19 points in 11 games, Harvard-18 points in 13 games, Yale-14 points in 12 games,
Brown-13 points in 12 games, RPI-12 points in 12 games, Princeton-11 points in 12 games, Saint Lawrence-8 points in 11 games.

The bad news is that Colgate has no more opponents this regular season that are ranked higher than them in the PWR.
That means that we are favored in ALL 11 games and that we need to 'run the table.'
Realistically, we had better do well enough to place in the 'top four' of ECAC Hockey standings and earn a bye in that tourney's first round.

Andrew Takacs led ‘Gate out onto the ice for tonight’s pre-game warmup.
Ben Charette did the same for Harvard.

Colgate penalty (hooking). Killed.

Harvard 8, Colgate 5, SOG after one.
Colgate 0, Harvard 0, score after one.

Posts pinged on both ends.

Colgate penalty (interference). Killed.

Beautiful goal by Max Nagel (from Jack Brandt and Antonio Fernandez).

Harvard penalty (cross-checking). Killed.

Harvard goal. Mike Harder not happy with officiating.

Colgate penalty (Takacs, interference). Killed, unbelievably so.

We really turned our play around that period. Whatever Mike Harder told them between the first and second periods, it worked.

Colgate 19, Harvard 15, SOG after two.
Colgate 1, Harvard 1, score after two.

Harvard penalty (holding). Killed. No sense of urgency.

Michael Neumeier went down hard. No penalty called, but Mike Harder challenged for major penalty. Unsuccessful.

Harvard goal after deflection. 28-18 Colgate SOG.

If we lose, we are really going to regret this game.
Clarkson is losing and Dartmouth is leading and Quinnipiac is playing non-conference.

Colgate net empty.
Colgate miscue and ENG.

Colgate net empty again.
Another Harvard ENG.

Colgate 36, Harvard 24, final SOG.
Harvard 4, Colgate 1, final score.

Well, a 90-minute drive home tonight and I am still struggling to find one positive from tonight’s game. The closest that I can come is that I thought we ‘won’ the second period, overall. Unfortunately, it remains a three-period game.

In my book, it was just one big missed opportunity.

A tough loss, our offense disappeared this weekend. Irwin is our most steady dman, Chorske looked slow and lazy, wonder if he's hurt ? Takacs continues to play well.

Maybe but you're not giving credit to our goalie. The final score is not indicative of how close this game was from start to finish. Two empty netters make it seem like it was more one-sided. The conference as a whole isn't that strong and there are teams bunched in the middle that can take out any of the top four teams. So chalk it up to another night in the ECAC and get ready for a trip to Canton and Potsdam.

Skate79,
That’s the beauty of life… everybody is different and everybody views college hockey games differently.

I was there, so I am very well aware of the fact that the final two Harvard goals were ENGs. Having said that, I wouldn’t put last night’s game into the ‘you win some, you lose some’ category. I believe that we have the talent to finish in the top four of ECAC Hockey this year. I am not so sure about Harvard.

But, if we are going to do so, we need to put in maximum effort every game. I don’t think we did so last night and I can’t believe Mike Harder was happy with his team’s 60-minute effort either. There was just a lack of urgency on our part throughout the game. I am a huge Brett Chorske fan, but I don’t think he had a great game. The same with Andrew Takacs. I thought he played a good game, but not a great one. A case in point was his unnecessary interference penalty. No, Harvard didn’t score on that Power Play, but that was two minutes that we were on the defensive, playing in our own end and not playing in their end. Two minutes may not seem like much, but I was at Lynah on Friday night and watched Cornell score two goals against Harvard in 82 seconds!!

I truly believe that we could have (and should have) beat Harvard at home last night. We knew it was a game in-hand on Quinnipiac. And, as it turned out, Clarkson lost their game in-hand on Quinnipiac last night. We need to capitalize on those opportunities.

But woulda-shoulda-couldas don’t count. We need to head to the North Country and exert maximum effort both nights. If we do, I truly believe that we have the talent to win both games on the road. And I will be there supporting them in that effort. Go ‘Gate!

P.S. - Another prime example of our lack of effort last night. I think it was on Harvard’s holding penalty… I am not sure if Colgate had one SOG on that Power Play. Sheesh!

That's all well and good but you are dismissing the fact that during any given season, a team will stumble at an unlikely time and lose a game they should win. You're not always going to get max effort for 60 minutes for every single game. Teams that are uber-talented can sometimes get away with bringing their B game against an inferior opponent at home and manage to win the game. Earlier in the season, we shut out Quinnipiac at their place. It happens.

Harvard is in no danger of finishing in the top 4. We don't have the skill up front and our D structure needs work. Ben Charrette has been a pleasant surprise and hopefully, future recruiting classes will get us back to the NCAAs. But for now, we're looking at a sixth or seventh place finish.

I really don't think that there is a dominating team in the league this year. Playing well down the stretch(now) is all that matters. There are about eight teams fighting for the first round bye, who gets hot ?

I agree that there is no single "dominant" team in the ECAC this season. One team is capable of beating the other on any given night.

As for us, the goal should be a top 4 finish and avoid the now-single elimination first round. As for the NCAAs, it's hoist the Whitelaw Cup or bust.
