Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

Have to agree with you Magoo ! You think they don't get "up" for non conf games ?
I hope they do. But maybe the OOC teams are just better.

Really nice article on Chorske. We’ve lost some good players through the portal but also have got some good players from it.

Shabby, I totally agree.

It is fascinating to me how different his style is from that of Don Vaughan, but that may just be a generational thing.

Because I enjoy all D-1 men’s ice hockey, I just wish we were more relevant on the national stage. But, with every new NCAA ruling, the gap between the have’s and the have not’s seems to be getting greater, so my wish may never come true. In the meantime, I will just enjoy our role in ECAC Hockey.

The PWR#21 Long Island University (LIU) home series in early January will be PWR#33 Colgate's last non-conference games of the regular season.
After reading Shabby's post and Magoo's reply, I decided to do some research this morning.
What is our record against non-conference opponents in the regular season in the Class of 1965 Arena era (2016-2025)?
Taking a deeper dive into it, what are our records home and away... and against better and worse opponents (based on PWR)?
Here is what I found...

Colgate vs. Non-Conference Opponents in the Class of 1965 Arena Era (2016-2025)
-Regular Season based on season-ending PairWise Ranking (PWR)-

26-55-15
Overall: 11-20-11 Home, 14-31-4 Away, 1-4-0 Neutral
vs. Better: 5-13-5 Home, 6-19-3 Away, 0-4-0 Neutral
vs. Worse: 6-7-6 Home, 8-12-1 Away, 1-0-0 Neutral

Bottom line? We really suck in non-conference play. We have 26 wins, 55 losses and 15 ties since 2016-17.
Don Vaughan’s teams went 20-42-12.
Mike Harder’s teams are 6-13-3.
We are 11-36-8 against teams that were better than us, including 6-23-3 away from our Arena. Generally, you aren't going to do great against better teams in their home arenas.
But what is really tragic is that we are only 15-19-7 against teams that are worse than us, including a losing record of 6-7-6 at our home Arena.
We have never had a winning non-conference record for a season in the Class of '65 Arena era and we won't this season, even if we sweep higher-PairWiseRanked LIU at home!

Love the work IBT...I may be wrong on this but the last time we beat a non-ECAC ranked team may have been at the opening of the 2014-15 season (@ St. Cloud State)...it's a problem and will be again this year IF we keep winning in league play...Pairwise we're bouncing around in the low 30s; I'd guess that if we had gone 2-4 against UConn, Lowell and Penn State, instead of 0-6, we'd be somewhere in the high teens...

GreenCoat, you are correct. Had we split our series with both UConn and UMass Lowell (still getting swept by Penn State), we’d be 18th in the PWR.

Had we gone 3-3 against UConn, Lowell, and Penn State (splitting all 3 series), we’d be 14th.

GreenCoat,
I don't follow poll rankings, but on Friday, October 19, 2019, Colgate beat #18 UMass Lowell, 4-3 in OT, in Lowell.

Prior to that, Colgate beat #11/9 Western Michigan, 5-1, in Kalamazoo on Saturday, November 25, 2017.

Prior to that, Colgate beat #19 Robert Morris, 6-1, in Pittsburgh, Penna., in the Three Rivers Classic on Tuesday, December 30, 2014.

Prior to that, Colgate beat #6/7 Saint Cloud State, 3-1, in Saint Cloud, Minn., on Friday, October 10, 2014.

Naturally, those aren't off the top of my head. he he he
But your point is well-taken. Four wins against ranked, non-conference opponents in over a decade is definitely not anything about which to write home.

Interestingly enough, all four of those wins came on the road, including one on neutral ice. Crazy!

Shabby, when I do research on a particular topic or aspect of Colgate and/or college hockey and post it on here, it is not ‘positive’ nor ‘negative,’ it is just a record of what happened… history. Afterwards, people can make their own judgement as to whether they think what happened was ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ But we own all of our history… the wins and the losses. And if I make a mistake in my research, please point it out. Live and learn. And Go ‘Gate!

I see our weekend opponent Concordia beat Clarkson 5-1. Might we have our hands full this weekend ?

Iowa...sorry, and you're never wrong. I was feeling a bit melancholy and haven't seen much about us being in first place. Was just trying to savor it as Clarkson is two points behind us with two games in hand, a loss to Q-Pac and they jump us also ! Not sure how long we'll be there.

Happy New Year, all.

Another good article, I think. This one is by Cameron Levasseur on College Hockey News (CHN)…

https://www.collegehockeynews.com/ne...esolutions.php

I watched Quinnipiac at Harvard tonight on ESPN+ and was pleasantly surprised that Harvard took the Bobcats to OT. We definitely have our work cut out for us with LIU and then the roadtrip to QU and Princeton.

For Saturday’s exhibition against Concordia, I would like to see our three goalies get one period apiece.

Good article about former Raider Bobby McMann…

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/603...mann-nhl-goal/

While no mention of Colgate was made in it, we did get multiple mentions tonight by the ESPN+ broadcasters of the Denver at Maine game, courtesy of the great play by ‘Gate grad Ross Mitton. The game itself was outstanding, with Denver scoring in the final twenty seconds of regulation to win, 2-1. “Isn’t that right, Bucci?”

Lastly, Colgate announced today that the time of the puck-drop for next Saturday’s home game against Long Island University (LIU) has been pushed back an hour (to 5 p.m.). Doors will open at 4 p.m.

FYI...Concordia founded 1974 is located in Montreal on dual campuses. A merger of Loyola Univ and St George Williams, 50,000 students. We've had some very nasty games with Canadian schools in the past.
