Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

Andrew Takacs and Ian Shane are in goal for Colgate and Cornell, respectively, tonight.

Lynah Rink is ‘sold out’ on this ‘white out’ night, complete with toothpaste thrown on the ice.

Colgate’s Brett Chorske opens the scoring with a beautiful goal. Max Nagel and Jacob Napier with the assists.

Colgate penalty. Killed.

Cornell 5, Colgate 4, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, Cornell 0, score after one.

Colgate penalty. Killed.

Cornell penalty. PPG by Ryan Spinale from Michael Neumeier and Tommy Bergsland.

Cornell scored a beauty with 45 seconds left in the second period.

Cornell 17, Colgate 8, SOG after two.
Colgate 2, Cornell 1, score after two.

Cornell penalty. Killed.

Colgate penalty. Another Colgate penalty.
PPG by Cornell to tie it up.

Cornell 28, Colgate 10, SOG after regulation.
Colgate 2, Cornell 2, score after regulation.

OT loss.

I made a quick exit after the winning goal.

Normally you would say OK a point at Cornell is not the end of the world but WTH was that? We got a goal early and just decided to never play offense again. 10 SOG and 8 with like 4 minutes left when we woke up? I can’t remember a game in the last 10 years that was that porous offensively. Frustrating loss up 2-0 but also a miracle we got a point. I have no idea what this team’s identity is right now.

All alone in first place after a Dartmouth loss. Enjoy it for a night. and Cornell only gained one point on us, not three.

BTW...The call on Schneider to put Cornell up two men was a ticky tacky bs call. Cost us the tying goal. Being outshot 31-10 is never a good thing.

We never trailed, and lost.

Cornell had a 3 on none in OT leading up the game winning goal. Yeah, it’s 3 on 3 OT, a unique situation that never happens in the playoffs but this is something that should be addressed at practice.

We didn’t deserve to win… and didn’t.

Things got chippy at the end of the second period and through the third. I expect that will continue tomorrow night.

Ian Shane is beatable. We just need to get 30 shots at him through three periods. But, that is hard to do with Cornell’s style of play against the boards.

Saw most of the game on SNY....a real treat not to have ESPN+ to watch. Tonight's game will probably not be on TV, right?

Harder was on the Cornell radio pregame last night and he seems like a very funny all around good guy.

Both teams made a ton of mistakes last night; it didn't exactly look like a Lake Placid preview. I assume they will each continue to work the kinks out. We have several key guys out and are playing with a flotilla of injured bodies, and I'm sure 'Gate is as well.

Good luck for the rest of the RS, except tonight.

I thought the Cornell broadcasters were very good.

That's Grady Whittenburg, who has been behind the mic coming up on 35 years including a long stint for the Binghamton AHL team, and has been a fill-in for the Caps, and Tim Vanini, a former Cornell player and an experienced coach who gave up the coaching life to be closer to family. We are quite fortunate.

Well, ticket manager Jackie said tonight’s game is sold out for the third or fourth consecutive year. Crazy!

Andrew Takacs (Colgate) and Ian Shane (Cornell) led their teams out onto the ice tonight in Hamilton, N.Y., as they did last night in nearby Ithaca, N.Y.

Halfway through the first period… Colgate 6-1 SOG.

Colgate penalty. Killed.

Cornell icing. Colgate wins face-off in Cornell’s end. And goal by Jake Schneider (from Alex DiPaolo).

Colgate defensive error leads to Cornell goal on their second SOG.

Colgate 8, Cornell 3, SOG after one.
Colgate 1, Cornell 1, score after one.

Colgate penalty. Killed.

And seconds later, Colgate’s Nic Belpedio scores (from Robby Newton).

Matching minor penalties. 4 on 4 for two minutes. And immediately, Colgate’s Alex DiPaolo scores a beautiful goal (from Max Nagel).

Colgate penalty with one minute to go in the second period. And Cornell scores a PPG.

Colgate 13, Cornell 12, SOG after two.
Colgate 3, Cornell 2, score after two.

We’ve seen this before, where we let them back into the game late in the second period.

Less than two minutes into the third period, Cornell’s Ondrej Psenicka scored a beautiful goal.

Cornell penalty. Cornell 15-13 SOG going into it.
Under coach’s review for 2 or 5 minutes. Successful. Cornell gets 2-minute penalty and 5-minute penalty. 2-minute penalty killed.

Colgate’s Michael Neumeier (unassisted) scored PPG. Colgate 17-15 SOG.
Colgate’s Reid Irwin scored PPG (from Brett Chorske). Colgate 18-15 SOG.
Penalty over. Colgate 19-15 SOG.

Cornell penalty. Killed.

My last posts didn’t save, I guess. But we know we got an ENG from Max Nagel to ice it away.

Very happy with the 6-3 win and first place. Phantom 5 min major on the Big Red ? Noone knows why, Shafer didn't complain so it must have happened ? Cost Cornell the game as we scored twice on it. My arms were raised when we scored goal number six ! Joy in Mudville tonight !!

And for the 2nd year in a row, we go into the holiday break with a win over Cornell!

It would be great if the student fans in attendance tonight return for our remaining home games this season and give us that home crowd boost.

Phantom 5 minute penalty is right!! Did anyone see it? Nonetheless there was a phenomenal crowd tonight and what a fun atmosphere!!! The students made a difference. It was satisfying to this old fan to see Shafer lose his last game in Hamilton. And, just wondering - how many visitor teams do a stick tap to their fans other than Cornell? Way to go ‘gate!!!

Not even a 135-minute drive home on snowy, slushy, slick roads can keep the smile off my face tonight. And who would believe that just getting back to .500 hockey is as exhilarating as it is tonight?!

All I could say to the Professor, “Red,” Charlie and that ‘Gate-lovin’ father with the autographed jersey tonight, on my way out the door, is… ‘I am one happy camper!’

Maybe it’s because Colgate was able to bid Cornell coach Mike Schafer a fond farewell from its home ice with a 6-3 final score. Live by the sword and die by the sword, and that is what Mike’s chirty style of hockey netted him tonight with that five-minute major penalty. Read that as ‘Karma.’ Hopefully Casey Jones can get Cornell back on track next year.

As for Mike, he jawed at the ref, post-game, right in front of me (as I was waving and bidding him adieu, as was “Red”). I am positive that he believes that the falling snow somehow caused the moons to misalign tonight, thereby causing the loss. It certainly wasn’t his fault, nor his team’s fault, nor Ian Shane’s fault, nor…

My biggest takeaway tonight was not about Cornell’s entitled coach, though, but instead about Colgate coach Mike Harder. He comes across as a young guy that just wants to have fun, wants his players to have fun, wants his fans to have fun, etc. He has a quick smile and a great laugh when he is interviewed between periods. But he is incredibly shrewd, or at least he is in radio contact with someone upstairs who is incredibly shrewd. Think about it. How many times has he, as coach, challenged for a five-minute major penalty on what was originally called on-ice as a two-minute minor? And how many times has he been successful? I don’t have the facts in front of me now, but I dare guess that he has been successful at more than a 2-to-1 margin (and maybe even a 3-to-1 margin). This fun-loving guy is serious.

While I am really enjoying seeing Dartmouth, Princeton and maybe even Brown starting to turn the corner in ECAC Hockey (‘a rising tide lifts all ships’), maybe Colgate under Mike Harder is there, too. Maybe, just maybe, .500 hockey won’t be enough to satisfy anyone in or near Hamilton, N.Y., anymore. As the ball drops in New York City on New Year’s Eve, Colgate will sit atop ECAC Hockey standings. Happy New Year, indeed.

Finally (for tonight), as someone else has posted here, tonight’s attendance and atmosphere were both incredible!! While I personally didn’t appreciate the long lines at the concessions nor the restroom(s) between periods… what a great advertisement for college hockey in upstate New York in the winter!! The pep bands, plural, were outstanding!! Even the old man passing out newspapers, who left the Class of 1965 Arena with his tail between his legs, was part of my fun tonight. Ken Parrotte of West Monroe, N.Y., and Hamiltonian Russ Lura had a great time. We really need to all try to make this a regular occurrence. Come out, support Colgate ice hockey (men’s and women’s), and bring a friend (or a frat)!!

P.S. - My guys Brett Chorske and Andrew Takacs made themselves known this weekend as we took 4 of 6 points from Big Red. But does Antonio Fernandez need a Christmas break? I don’t recall seeing him this weekend. Just curious.

The Cornell recap said the 5min major was a “butt ending penalty.” Also in the recap, which is a welcome surprise:

LONGEST ACTIVE GOAL-SCORING STREAKS

Division I Programs
  1. 83 games, Colgate
  2. 76 games, Minnesota
  3. 68 games, Arizona State
  4. 60 games, Denver
  5. 48 games, Cornell
  6. 43 games, Wisconsin
Along with everyone else, will share my Adieu to Schafer with a gratifying Colgate W and a special finger to their AD. My wish for the New Year is a lower GAA!

great finish to a good weekend...love the traffic in front of their goal all night...hopefully Panetta and LaBelle back in early 2025 but Harder & Company brought in four defensemen for this year, 2 frosh and 2 sophomore transfers...yes, Colgate and Cornell lucky to both have quality broadcast teams...and congrats to Coach Schaefer on a great career...Cornell has a great program and a win over the Big Red anytime is great...full house tonight and, yes, would like to see more fannies in the seats starting in January, 2025...solid finish to 2024, no doubt...

Chatted with some of the hockey parents post game... apparently the players called out the butt-end to the coaches, was to the head. Saw Labelle in a sling at Ithaca Friday, was told he's 4-6 weeks... they're hoping he's back when league play resumes.

Fun weekend, the crowd at Lynah is always great and our place was hopping last night. More crowds like that please!

I cant remember the last time that we were in first place this far into the season (hasnt helped that QU has been playing great hockey in years past and running out to a huge lead). Be nice to have a Cleary Cup this year, but really we need to focus on the top 4 and get through the one and done games. I dont know about anyone else that was at Lynah but the atomosphere did not step up to its normal. The band played sparingly, no real chants except a "something, something, something, you suck...." chant. I actually for the first time have thought that we had the better atmosphere.

I do wonder if the cornell players hear about how few fans we get and then sit there and say, when ever ive been there its been loud....but anyways.

I do think having the cornell game earlier in the season could help with student involvement, especially, when you win like that and are first place in the league. Hopefully when league games start up again the school can really push the games and come up with creative reasons for the students to show up, Free Slices, idk and did we just hear positivity from GreenCoat? this weekend must have gone really well...(
