Re: Colgate 2010-11

Nice job, 'gate. Always tough to see one team's season end. Just glad we're in it to fight another day!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Wow...what a series! Congrats to the coaching staff and the players. They hung in there and found a way to beat a very good hockey team in their own building. Good luck against the Dutchmen next weekend.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Congratulations, Colgate. It was a ton of fun having your band play with ours this weekend - I'm glad you made it to the next round, just wish it hadn't been RPI you beat.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

There IS joy in Mudville !!! I'm not going to think about Union for a day or two !! Just going to savor this like a fine wine. If we didn't deserve this finally....WOW !!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

watched the Bourdon shot and didn't think much of it, then saw the water bottle on York's right dislodged...game over...great, great effort in third period and for whole of ot...first two periods 'Gate seemed not to have their legs and lucky to be tied 1-1 after two...from that point on they played well, had the better scoring chances...both goalies played great...Smith, Brisbois and Mayer were very good...BTW, would like to second previous post: the RPI student feed was well done and the young men who announced the game were the BEST (and most obejctive) student announcers I have heard in any sports broadcast in the last 20years...congrats to kids and the coaches for refusing to quit...no matter what the outcome from last night they deserve A LOT of credit

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Watching game #3 now. Mayer's shorty was nice. It was because of Austin Smith...great stick check on the puck...stolen from an RPI player in the neutral zone...not too many can make that kind of play. Then they went in two on York. Will watch the game winner in about 2 hours lol.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Congratulations. I liked the RPI team you beat, but you and your team certainly had some good luck and positive feelings coming to you! Have fun in Schenectady.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Most exciting and amazing game of the season!...especially with GR's good play-by-play. Always tough to see a team lose after playing OT (or Double OT) but our guys hung in there to the end. Hitting pipes, Mihalik playing on his head, Bourdon snapping the winner - all good stuff. Great to beat a nationally ranked team, and come from behind 1-0 in games. The team certainly buckled down and took care of busines in these last two games; let's hope for a repeat next weekend. But that's for another day. Just savoring the huge vistory today. Team and coaches must be proud. (Shabby - hope you're enjoying the third period! :)

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Congratulations on the victory over RPI. I think it's going to be a competitive series in Schenectady since you guys have been playing so well recently. I hope the students show up in full force...I'm a bit concerned though because finals start on Monday.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Retractions may be in order for some of the early, mid, and late season Colgate postings after the phenomenal weekend in Troy. The Red Raiders are and have been formidable, though snakebitten, for much of their frustrating season. Do they own the record for one goal losses in a season? It would not be surprising to see a team that has lost twenty-five games take twenty-five game winner Union to three games at Achilles.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

WOW!!!!!

3 years ago, I saw the Colgate hockey team upend Clarkson in double overtime on the road in Potsdam. David McIntyre (then a sophomore) scored the game-winner, and Mark Dekanich stood on his head to keep the team in the game.

And last night, I had the honor of seeing this year's Colgate hockey team upend RPI in double overtime on the road in Troy. This time, it was Robbie Bourdon (also a sophomore) who scored the game-winner, and Eric Mihalik (a freshman!) stood on his head to keep the season alive.

That 1st overtime I was running out of breath thinking when was the goal going to happen. We hit the post, Day got stymied on a mini-breakaway, then Wagner had an opportunity and couldn't solve York. Then in the 2nd OT a few minutes before the game-winner we had a chance and York stood on his head. I was starting to think we were going to get the short end of the stick. But we won :D

I am very proud of the players on this team. They overcame so much adversity and never lost confidence when in that 14-game winless slide. We lost so many close games, and now EVERY one of our victories since (and including) the Clarkson win have been "close" victories -- either we won by a goal or iced the game with an empty-netter. This is clearly the team that was supposed to finish 4th/5th that's coming out to play right now.

Next weekend won't get any easier, but I have confidence that this will be a great series. I'm unsure if I can make it back to the Capital District but at the very least I will watch the games online if not in person. We're due for a win or two against the Dutchmen.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Double OT, come on now, that game was just getting started by Union OT standards. ;). Seriously though, congratulations coming back from one down to win in it. (And by the way I called it in the Pick the Playoffs contest). The season standings are irrelevant in my view when it comes to the postseason, it's who is or isn't playing well when the postseason begins, and obviously, Colgate was and is playing well. The Raiders are playing with house money and should come into Messa relaxed and confident...all of the hallmarks of a dangerous foe.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

I would argue that Colgate has had confidence all season but as stated many times, one-goal losses for whatever reason(s) and inconsistent play has lead us to the bottom of the league and national standings. That said, the team never relented.

Disagree about being relaxed. Colgate has had to work for every goal this season. Nothing comes without hard work, dedication, leadership, and coaching. A string of wins hardly dictates a reason to feel comfortable and relaxed, particularly against the 4th ranked team in the country on their home ice. I'd say Colgate is the obvious underdog in this series. We are inconsistent on many levels and are undisciplined which are disasterous flaws against a team of Union's national caliber. As with RPI, hoping for a win and proud to play regardless of the outcome.

One poster said, "Colgate is the best last place team in the country".
That argument could definitely be made for the ECAC.

Go 'Gate

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Defense and goaltending were great. After the first period on Friday we gave up a total of 4 goals in 9 and a half periods

The D-men were very strong on the highly talented RPI forwards--met them at the blue line and were very strong on the boards
