Re: Colgate 2010-11

By the time we reached the end of the ECAC season we had the somewhat curious phenomenon of 10 teams being within perhaps one standard deviation of being equal...Q-Pac could easily beat Cornell (they've had success in Ithaca over the years) and Harvard could certainly beat Dartmouth...our task (and SLU's) is tougher for Union and Yale are the real deal...nonetheless, I agree with Gaterooter; despite some continuing concerns about the program (structural issues being paramount) I know this team will give 100% and both players and coaches are to be congratulated from turning a disasterous season into something much more for all of us (quite a lesson in the vissitudes of life as well)...go 'Gate and go SLU...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

A previous out-of-town commitment means I will not see/hear/be at this weekend's games.:( Would appreciate posters giving a rundown of the games so I know what's happening.

GO 'GATE - BEAT THE DUTCH!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

It's a generally good idea to avoid taking TWO too-many-men-on-the-ice penalties against a team that converts 31% of their PPs. The last two Union goals resulted from a lack of effort on our part; the fourth goal was especially inexcusable. I don't care if it's 1-1 or 7-1; you don't leave your goalie (particularly one who has kept you in the game for 58 minutes) in that situation. No doubt Union is good and they have one of the best (if not the best) freshmen classes in the country. We could learn a thing or two from their efforts. Nonetheless, other than Wagner, Mihalik and a few others, I thought we played a subpar game (I hope nobody was resting on their laurels, because laurels this year are few and far between) and we will have to play our best to even be competitive against a team that has more depth and skill than Colgate. I sincerely hope I don't have to make such a statement in 3 or 4 years.

Ditto. TWO of Union's 4 goals were the result of this "you can't count" fiasco. Other than that a valiant effort by the team tonight. Just regroup tonight and come out firing tomorrow.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Mihalik kept Colgate in the game. Hatch's hustle play keeping the puck in the zone and subsequent wrap around score was the backbreaker. It looked to me as if Colgate didn't quit but was really worn out by half way through the final period.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Somehow Don and senior leadership has got to get us ready to play flat out from the drop of the first puck in the first period tomorrow night...If not this Union team will kick us in the teeth, back over our carcass and chuckle on the way out of the arena...

Do it Gate...smart and clean knowing anything less could result in no hockey for 7 months...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Two mental lapses, but give Colgate tons of credit. We are not playing like our record indicates or like a 12th seed. We have great talent and can hold our own against the #4 team in the country. I'd say we have a lot to be proud of. We are fighting a good fight when it matters most in the season. Losses this time of year are a bit easier to swallow. If the Saints and Crimson can get it done, SO CAN COLGATE!

Hang tough, 'Gate!
Thank you seniors!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Again we got hammered in the first period, shots 22-4. Why aren't we ready ? Again, penalties crushed us, two five on threes, took four seconds to score and we're killing off another almost full penalty !

Thought we played much better and about even for the second and third periods. I was extremely happy at 2-1 going into the third and we should have tied it when somehow the puck stayed out of the net in a scrum with their goalie flopping all over the place and we must of had three or four whacks at it. Then penalties !! 3-1 and it was over.

We're cooked if we play a first period like that tonight. We had our chances. Messa had a true hockey atmosphere, it was great.

BTW...I can't sign into USCHO this am..too many hits ?? Signed on to USCHO Fan Forum...I can only stay here.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

No offense TchrBill but exactly how do we have "great talent"??? My God, let's cut the hyperbole a little...we're all rooting for the same team and last weekend was great, but...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

saw the video...congrats to Don in challenging some of his players; if you watched the game you know what he's talking about...

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Tough to be at the game last night.

To start, a standing room only crowd (note the listed capacity of Messa of 2,225 is less than the listed capacity of Starr - 2,246). The introduction of the players makes you feel like your at the Stanley Cup finals - the crowd is soooo loud you can't hear the public address system. The atmosphere there is amazing.

We are totally intimidated and shots on goal are 17-1 after about 8 or 9 minutes.

We lose almost every loose puck. Normally a strength of Colgate teams is winning, and controlling pucks on the boards. Union's really good, but we didn't show a very good effort. Looked like we were pee wees out there.

Smith, Bourdon, Brisebois, Bartliff were all shut down. Frank looked better in the 3rd stanza.

Day, I think was our best player, and the breath-of-fresh-air 4th line of McCann McNamara and Nasca, who came out in the 2nd period seemed to be the only ones putting out like they should in a playoff game. Mayer and Wagner also played well.

Union routinely skated around us to be able to generate scoring chances.

We did not put any defensive pressure on them in their zone in the first period. Little neutral zone pressure in the first either.

Union constantly had 2 men deep forechecking and stole the puck from us during our breakout plays frequently.

Our defensive effort in our defensive zone was very bad for most of the game.

Mihalik was very good in the nets for us - without him, they score 8 or 9 goals.

The first too many men penalty was 'one of those things' where we had a scoring chance and one of our guys is not off the ice when the puck is passed from our bench area creating a mini break. The refs had no choice but to call that one. The second one with a minute left ... we had 6 skaters and Mihalik on the ice for a good 20 seconds - I had time to count our guys twice. How does that happen?

Union took the body far more effectively than we did. They gave us very little room to breath in our own end and in the neutral zone. We probably had more time to control the puck in our offensive zone, although we didn't seem to have much patience for doing so.

Union will be tough to beat tonight, although I know we can certainly play a lot better than last night, with a hot goaltender and real effort, who knows? Don't think I can get there tonight.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Greencoat..Are you "off u'r meds" again ? Don't be so critical...We have talent, just not as much as Union, man are they deep ! When we won a few games this thread was very amiable again. Stay positive! Thought we got rid of all the "whiners" And please don't jump on "positive fellow posters"

Shabby...who really needs the meds, someone who say we've got "great talent" when the team is 9-26-3 or someone who might advise "toning" the accolades down a little...please...if the sole purpose of this thread is to be nothing but positive 100% of the time then I suggest everyone go work for the federal government and spend as much money as we can since we really don't have deficit (and unfunded liability) problems...we did not play well last night (see DV press conference)...would you like to impose a speech code? I think my criticisms over the years have been fair and, for the most part, accurate. It gives me no great pleasure to what us play .400 hockey for the past five years. I won't get into specifics about my "maroon" heart, but sometimes a judicious use of one's head makes sense.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

last night was my first ever trip to Union. Their rink is terrible, The ice is small and it was warm so our speed was nullified. Brisebois had no chance to wheel and deal. They have a big team that forechecks well on a tiny ice surface. It doesn't seem like a legit D1 situation. Plus their guys are mostly very old. I was not impressed by the whole thing. Except for the noise of the fans--that was good and we could use that at Starr. We played fine in the last 2 periods. We had an incredible chance to tie it up at 2-2--I don't know how the puck didn't go in then. That would have changed everything. The situation was very adverse for Colgate and we did a good job of recovering from a tough first period. I wish I could have stayed for tonights game. Good luck to our guys -- we have shown great character since the Clarkson win over a month ago. Why is GreenCoat so negative--our guys have made a complete turnaround and are playing very well.

Re: Colgate 2010-11

Achilles was packed; could barely hear myself cheer at times. The fans create a great atmosphere, but the rink itself is lackluster. Have been to enough Union games when the stands are only half full...simply awful. Who knows how great 2245 at Starr could be on a regular basis? Too many improvements to be made tonight - as listed by other posters - I'm guessing we won't make the same mistakes twice. Great to get a second chance. That's what the postseason is all about.

More harmless opinions that get slammed. Just can't win on here.

Go Colgate!
Take Game 2!

Re: Colgate 2010-11

RaiderJoe...I'm delighted they've turned a very bad season around to some degree...my basic point is that they did NOT play that well last night (again, see DV press conference)...BTW, you're a little negative on Union apparently and I've given them due credit all year long...Nate Leamen and the entire Union hockey program deserve a ton of credit for what they've done...
