Re: Colgate 2010-11
Tough to be at the game last night.
To start, a standing room only crowd (note the listed capacity of Messa of 2,225 is less than the listed capacity of Starr - 2,246). The introduction of the players makes you feel like your at the Stanley Cup finals - the crowd is soooo loud you can't hear the public address system. The atmosphere there is amazing.
We are totally intimidated and shots on goal are 17-1 after about 8 or 9 minutes.
We lose almost every loose puck. Normally a strength of Colgate teams is winning, and controlling pucks on the boards. Union's really good, but we didn't show a very good effort. Looked like we were pee wees out there.
Smith, Bourdon, Brisebois, Bartliff were all shut down. Frank looked better in the 3rd stanza.
Day, I think was our best player, and the breath-of-fresh-air 4th line of McCann McNamara and Nasca, who came out in the 2nd period seemed to be the only ones putting out like they should in a playoff game. Mayer and Wagner also played well.
Union routinely skated around us to be able to generate scoring chances.
We did not put any defensive pressure on them in their zone in the first period. Little neutral zone pressure in the first either.
Union constantly had 2 men deep forechecking and stole the puck from us during our breakout plays frequently.
Our defensive effort in our defensive zone was very bad for most of the game.
Mihalik was very good in the nets for us - without him, they score 8 or 9 goals.
The first too many men penalty was 'one of those things' where we had a scoring chance and one of our guys is not off the ice when the puck is passed from our bench area creating a mini break. The refs had no choice but to call that one. The second one with a minute left ... we had 6 skaters and Mihalik on the ice for a good 20 seconds - I had time to count our guys twice. How does that happen?
Union took the body far more effectively than we did. They gave us very little room to breath in our own end and in the neutral zone. We probably had more time to control the puck in our offensive zone, although we didn't seem to have much patience for doing so.
Union will be tough to beat tonight, although I know we can certainly play a lot better than last night, with a hot goaltender and real effort, who knows? Don't think I can get there tonight.
