Coaching Openings

Re: Coaching Openings

A guess - he has been the main recruiter, team isn't drawing recruits as well as in the past, on ice performance is getting worse, end of story.

My guess is that he didn't gel well with the head honcho. And although recruiting has been down, MacDonald isn't fully to blame. UMD has had trouble for years getting on the same page with admissions in regards to foreign women's hockey players. Mrázová this past season wasn't admitted until spring semester after she completed a full semester at Minnesota. Seems odd that a kid could get into the admissions at the U of M and not at UMD. Same type of deal happening with this year's recruiting class. Nine newbies because a few of them (Swedes seem to have the most trouble, at least in the recent years) didn't get in last year. New AD, Josh Berlo, seems to be helping the admissions process, or at least the communication between admissions and athletics.

Re: Coaching Openings

Does Scanlan have any college coaching experience? I just know he has been head coach for East Grand Forks girls high school team. Nice guy. I coached against his team 2 years ago and we had a great talk about girls hockey.

Scanlon's profile from the BSU Press Release:

"Scanlan recently completed his sixth season as head coach of the East Grand Forks High School girl’s ice hockey team. In the midst of his 18th year with East Grand Forks school district, Scanlan was also the boy’s hockey coach from 1996-2005 and has served as the Green Wave’s activities director since 2000. Scanlan also has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience. He was an assistant coach for the University of North Dakota men’s ice hockey team from 1989-1996, at Western Michigan University from 1985-1989 and was a graduate assistant coach at Northern Michigan University in 1984-85. Scanlan is a 1985 graduate of Bemidji State, where he was a goaltender from 1978-1982, with a degree in physical education and health. He later earned a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration from Western Michigan University in 1988."

Re: Coaching Openings

As an Athletic Director and search commitee, do you hire a person with no recruiting experience? They better be really impressive to hire them.

Nearly 20 years removed from college hockey, and men's hockey at that??!! He better be Scotty Bowman quality!!! I would guess that his inclusion is a community relations move with the Minnesote high school hockey community. I can't imagine that they would hire him....and I've been wrong before.

was she actually admitted as a degree seeking student in one of the schools at U of MN? I highly doubt it.
at 22 I don't even think they'd ask for previous college transcripts or ACT/SAT scores if all you want to do is take classes, just about anyone can take a class at the U of MN.
Degree seeking student, that's a whole different story.

Good point. I'm not entirely sure on the nature of the classes she was taking or how the entire admissions process works. The fact remains that Mrázová isn't the first (and more than likely) won't be the last kid UMD admissions has an issue with

Re: Coaching Openings

I think it'll come down to Bruinicks or Amber. I would think the head coaching experience may give Bruinicks the job while retaining Fryklund as assistant.

Bruininks (Fabio) is a terrific coach who is well respected by the players he works with. It's interesting that he's looking to move again after just one season with MSU, but not surprising. Why not go for a head position with a team that shows signs of improvement and isn't looking for a romper room to contain its incoming freshmen class?

Re: Coaching Openings

Just a little perspective on the dedication it takes to be a college hockey coach. I caught the following on a job listing on the ACHA board:

Head Hockey Coach - Northland College
Salary: $31,692-$39,616
Status: Full Time

Admittedly a small D3 school in a lower cost area of Wisconsin, but you have to REALLY want to be a hockey coach to do it and not make much more than you can working at your local retail store. And that is a head coach.....I'm sure the assistants are only making 50-75%....

doesn't say if there are additional duties beyond coaching, some of the smaller schools do that, and consequently can pay more.

Re: Coaching Openings

I hear Bemidji will name their new coach today......should be interesting.

Any word on UMD assistant?

Look for that announcement in the next couple weeks. Heard they've got the final list of names for the last step in the interview/hiring process. Not sure who's on that list though

Re: Coaching Openings

Regarding the two goalies leaving Union--Dahl and PIncott-- PIncott is going to play CIS after her horrid experience at Union. She is far from quitting. I don't know where people get their erroneous information from that they so freely post on this site.

UPDATE: Union goalies, Dahl had to leave the sport she loves due to injuries hip and knee surgeries, Pencott just stated that she doesn't want to play anymore.

Not true. PIncott is playing CIS after her horrid experience at Union. Far from done. Get your facts straight.
