Coaching Openings

Re: Coaching Openings

Total silence out of Bemidji. I posted the question over on my BeaverPond Facebook Page, and nothing......

Must be something big going on!

maybe they are waiting for the NHL to settle out
then during the summer while the fishing/golf/vacation season...

fly in some big names and show them while they may not have known anything about the place or where it is ... that will make it tough for others to disrupt their golf game or fishing outing, who like a disruption of eating their samich or drinking warm beer?

Bemidji ... not a bad place for the guy that likes the outdoors and wants to get away from the NHL ... but still wants to be deeply involved in the competition of hockey and make good money

Troy Jutting just seems strange. I think Bruininks will end up getting it.

Re: Coaching Openings

Jutting does seem odd and I'd be concerned about how his teams played at Mankato. But him and Tom Serratore were roommates at Mankato State I believe.

Don't know much about Scanlan, but sounds like he's on the almost the same path Sertich took.

I think it'll come down to Bruinicks or Amber. I would think the head coaching experience may give Bruinicks the job while retaining Fryklund as assistant.

Re: Coaching Openings

I had "heard" Fryklund and Scanlan...didn't know the other 2 were part of the field. I'm going to guess Scanlan lands the job.

An Easterner chiming in, but doesn't it seem a little strange that NONE of the St Cloud candidates are on this list? Wouldn't you expect at least a little overlap (1 or 2)?

I give Frykland about a 200% better chance of getting the job than the women who applied for the SCSU job, gotta give her at least partial credit for the program moving in the right direction.

St Cloud is about 20 minutes north of the MSP Metro area. Small town feel surrounded by farm land. About an hour from the MSP airport.

Bemidji is about 150 miles north of St Cloud. It is really pretty with many trees and lakes, but it is also very isolated. As long as you like the outdoors and don't mind the isolation Bemidji is a great place. My son went to school there, I was ready to move there. Cost of housing is also very reasonable. Location just ends up narrowing the field of candidates.

I give her a 0% chance based on the fact that no recent assistant for a women's team took over as the head coach when there was a permanent vacancy. In fact, correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think any current DI women's head coach was hired from their position as assistant on the women's team.

Re: Coaching Openings

Minnesota, Dartmouth, Clarkson & Boston College promoted their assistants to Head Coaches. Worked out pretty well I would say.

Hate to be picky, but even from the farthest godforsaken NW suburbs (Maple Grove, Rogers) St Cloud is a good hour from the Twin Cities. It is NOT just a distant exurb/bedroom community out in rolling meadows with bluebirds and bunnies, and is in no way part of the Twin Cities. Some of the worst traffic I've ever sat in has been on that main drag out on the west side of town near Waite Park. For a better depiction, google "Stearns County Syndrome".

I agree with your description of Bemidji though. Beautiful area, big pine trees, beautiful lake. God's country for the outdoorsman.

Does Scanlan have any college coaching experience? I just know he has been head coach for East Grand Forks girls high school team. Nice guy. I coached against his team 2 years ago and we had a great talk about girls hockey.
