Coaching Openings

What's going on here? Fetter?
Not sure if all the coaching staff was let go, I don't think so, there was no press release about coach Fetter not coming back. My guess is that he will be given the chance to apply for the head coach position. If he is hired, I hope his wife is not part of the staff, sometimes you need a "buffer" between the head coach and his assistants. Not always , but the good cop, bad cop analogy can be used to describe the relationship between head and assistant coaches. I don't think that would be the case if his wife was his assistant, if fact, it would be a terrible idea. You can't have a married couple coaching a div 1 team, it would not be healthy for the players or team.

Yeah. No team could possibly win a national championship that way.

Re: Coaching Openings

So...who we got now, in D-I that will have a new head coach for 2014-2015?

Bemidji State, St. Cloud State, Lindenwood, New Hampshire...not sure, Maine...I assume someone was given the job on an interim basis? Others?

Maine starts their search on May, 11th according to Bangor news. I hope Maria Lewis is considered for some of the jobs that have opened up. I know many players that respected and enjoyed playing for her.

You would think they would start their search for an assistant to the two EXCELLENT coaches they have on staff now at the coaches' convention in Naples at the end of April.

Re: Coaching Openings

I agree. Sounds like the A.D. is being patient. He is also brand new to Maine, but the new season has already started so let's hope things move quickly.

Re: Coaching Openings

Any idea of who the prospective candidates might be? The number of openings this year seems to be greater than normal.

Nicole Goguen, former assistant at Plattsburgh. Way too successful to not land somewhere (if she wants back in, that is).

Disagree - 5 D1 head coach (Maine, UNH, St Coud, Bemidji, Lindenwood) and no D3 head coach openings at the moment. Last year there were a couple of D1 head coach changes (U Conn and Colgate) and 10 or more D3 head coaching changes (NEC, Nichols, Buffalo State, Amherst, William Smith, Concordia-Moorhead, Trinity, UNE, Neumann, Colby). This is a fairly typical year so far. Assistants come and go like the wind.

I believe she left hockey coaching - not sure why else she would have left Plattsburgh without taking a head coach job somewhere.

Sometimes they use their education, I think that is the case here. What about her at UNH? She is an alum. Could be another Wife/ Husband team.

I don't know the stats but 5 D1 schools seems high. Are there enough quality candidates for 5 spots?

Yes that seems high. Suspect the average is about 2 per year. Of the top of my head the coaching changes in D1 over the last four years are..... Maine, UVM, Uconn, Yale, Colgate, Brown, RMU, Ohio, Mankato...That is 9 in 4 years.

In different terms that means ~20-25% turnover rate (9 of 34 teams) off head coaches over a 4 year period.

You can include Penn State in there as well.

Nicole Goguen Williams is still in the Plattsburg area, working in the Fitness Industry - personal trainer... her major was Exercise Science.

Re: Coaching Openings

Penn was/is a "new D1 team" in that time period, so did not include that as a "change of coaching staff".

I get it. The discussion referred to the avaiability of qualified coaching talent. As a coach was required there it required one more qualified person to be included.
