CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Actually, Anchorage is pretty awesome. Visited for what I thought would be the only time, only to end up going back the next year. Great city to visit, the people are awesome, I don't know if I've ever been somewhere as scenic, and plenty of stuff to go see during the day when the games aren't going on. I would love to go back someday, but I'm waiting for the opportunity to visit in the summer.
I don't doubt it. I was talking more from a distance and cost stance, though, whereas uaafanblog was speaking of the quality of the city itself. I have wanted to make a trip to AA but with the conference disbanding and not really having the necessary funds at the moment, it probably won't happen. I just found it slightly hypocritical that a fan from Anchorage is criticizing another team's city:rolleyes:.

Marquette doesn't belong to that category. Fairbanks certainly doesn't. Um ... I think lots of Minnesotan's might argue that Bemidji is comparatively pristine. Even Mankato's small scale industry doesn't begin to compare. Then there's Houghton and Sault St. Marie ... don't think either was ever industrial in any measure (i could be wrong as their local manufacturing histories are mostly unknown to me).

So um .. completely different.

The Houghton area was one of the wealthiest areas of the country at the beginning of the 20th century. The whole area revolved around the copper mines, which led to the creation of Michigan Tech.

Haha. Houghton was once EXTREMELY industrial. The copper country name is there for a reason. It was a powerhouse of the mining industry for years. Now... Not so much.

The peak of "copper country" was 100 years ago. I would stipulate that mineral extraction is a major pollution generator. However, my link above is an indication my context when I said "post-industrial" at the beginning of this convo.

In any case, Toledo is a dump.

uaafanblog hooked me up with free tickets when I went. If you ask nicely he might be willing to subsidize your trip too. So there's that.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Chris Dilks figures that St. Cloud leaving will probably make it "impossible" to keep the WCHA alive, since without them Bemidji and Mankato are irrelevant and will fold, followed by every WCHA team in Mich and Alaska. This is the most bizarre reaction I've seen yet. What am I missing?

The name of his crack dealer.

Seriously though this can be good as well. It will open up room for Minn-Moorehead and UAH into the WCHA. I am sure they both will try and get in.

:) I think what gets lost in this whole discussion of the imminent demise of the WCHA and CCHA schools is the fact that the discussion (and the NCHC) is based on a faulty premise. That hockey is somehow a national sport in the US. At the end of the day, it's regional. An overwhelming majority of fans cheer for their own team and have an interest in their own conference. Nobody in Texas or Florida is going to watch North Dakota on TV now just because they are playing Miami instead of Bemidji. The exception is possibly the economics of hockey in Minnesota, but again, that's a regional issue. At the end of the day, hockey will survive at these smaller schools because of the support of the communities and because it is part of the identity of the school. Hockey for 90% of schools was never about contributing to the bottom line of the institution other than maybe spurring alumni donations.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

So, St. Cloud was the glue of the whole shebang? No offense to St. Cloud people on here, but lol?

I think there's some truth to it. 3 Schools in Minnesota is a lot more games in a smaller area then just two schools. The ECAC has tradition on its side so it will be fine. Atlantic Hockey has a smaller geographic footprint. I'd say the new WCHA is almost as bad as the CHA was. I can't see it surviving. We're going to lose a ton of D1 hockey schools in the next 5-10 years. You can thank Barry Alvarez, Penn State, and UND for that happening.

I'm convinced that Mankato will be one of them.

I actually somewhat agree that the size of the schools and the geographic distance in the merged WCHA and CCHA....let's just call it WC-HA for short :), that it could be similar to the old CHA. But, the thing is that there are more programs here and until the other conferences start picking off some, I think it could still last. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss? That is not going to happen.

You better give your memo to Minnesota State Moorhead so they don't waste their time or energy.
