CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I always love the spin they put in press releases. BGSU to join the WCHA:
“I’d like to thank the presidents of the institutions in the WCHA for extending this invitation,” BGSU President Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey said. “Our University and our hockey program has many similarities to the current WCHA members and we are excited to join with these schools in two years.”

Translation: We're so thrilled to join that we didn't jump at the opportunity, but rather waited until the last possible minute. Then we asked for an extension hoping that someone, anyone, would make us a better offer to join a league. But in the end, this was the only offer we had, so we were forced to take it. Oh yeah, and we're happy and thrilled, but mainly thrilled to be here in the WCHA where we wanted to be all along...
How long do you think UAH would hold an invite to the WCHA without accepting?

You're right about the spin. BG sure has a lot in common with us MN DIIs, Yooper DIIs, Ferris & the Alaska DIIs, school size, on the geographical edge of the league, only full DI in the group. Man. Instead, just say thank you, the WCHA has been a great league, and this will work best for us in the future. Andrew J Carter

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

FWIW, BG was NOT waiting for an invite from another conference. They were in talks with Buffalo and several AHA members concerning the possibility of forming a new league or retaining the CCHA with those new members. In the end there was too much uncertainty among those schools to continue talks so we took the WCHA up on their offer. To NOT take a look at all possible resolutions is irresponsible.

I'm going to miss road trips to BG, love watching games in that barn (not sarcasm).
Given Bergeron's response when he found out that MU jumped ship w/o informing him that it was going to happen, it will be a long, long time before BG plays MU in either place after these 2 seasons. He didn't appreciate hearing it 3rd hand given his history with MU.

Doesn't suprise me one bit, our atheltic department walks a very fine line between pathetic and flat out comical. Without knowing all the details of the situation, and what our AD was or was not permitting people (Rico) to say, I'll just go with Berg deserved better than that.

Not nearly as long as LSSU and Alaska-Fairbanks did!

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Bowling Green is actually probably one of the better road trips in the new WCHA. I've been to BGSU a number of times, there is stuff to do there if you are going to make a road trip to see your team in the new WCHA. Now, on the other hand, I grew up in Big Rapids, and I weep for those on that journey.

Bowling Green would be a better trip if it was in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Then we could see the Corvette museum and plant. Plus it would be a nice close trip for Huntsville. ;)

Thanks for the link. Just trying to figure out how Anchorage is a longer trip than _airbanks.

All distances are travel by road, so I used Mapquest (or was it Google Maps, I can't remember). Anyway, I guess to get to Anchorage by main roads, you actually have to go north of it and then turn south.

But since no team (I hope) from the lower 48 would be bussing to UAA or UA_, that is the reason I included the two average travel columns with the Alaska schools removed.

You could drive across most of the European continent in 10 hours.
Not remotely true. It's 10.5 hours just from Bordeaux (not even all the way in the west) to Zurich. Heck, Paris is ~8 hours from the Med coast and that's just in one country.
