CCHA teams will join WCHA

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Back on track: There's one interesting angle to all of these developments that I'd be interested in hearing your guys' take.

Let's say that the CCHA is saved by having BGSU, the AHA4 (Niagara, Mercyhurst, Canisius and Robert Morris) team up with either an upstart Buffalo or RIT. What becomes of AHA? Let's consider something with AHA: those leftovers are not exactly moneybags. While I'm sure that there are a few schools in there that are getting by just fine (Army and Air Force, in particular), several of them get absolutely abysmal attendance figures and I can't imagine that they're doing very well in the bank. If they dwindle down to 7 or 8 teams, is there a danger of the AHA becoming the new CHA?
Good question. In fact, I was asked that by one of my Niagara buddies. He wondered, if the new CCHA were formed as above ... and make the assumption that another AHA team goes to the ECAC (assume it to be HC), then that would leave:
AFA
Army
UConn
SHU
Bentley
AIC

Two-six team groups. One not too bad, the other pretty sad. The question was, would Army and AFA bolt for the new CCHA?

Tough question ... that is a pretty weak group of six, with at least three (maybe four) of the programs operating on a shoestring and not really capable or inclined to upgrade. So perhaps the two military schools would jump. Thus far they have held together pretty tight but that would be a difficult choice. They would know that if they did bolt, then it would doom those other programs.

The solution is for those programs to either step up or step out, IMAO.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

All of those things are the intellectual property of the professor. The school can't just take them and put them online without permission. I think you'd be surprised how few courses have such material available like that. You really think any significant percentage of daily class lectures/activities are being video or audio recorded?
Wow, your school is behind the times then. I think by the time I graduated all of my ME classes had material online, with about half having archived videos of lectures.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

So the new WCHA will have four WCHA schools and five CCHA schools. Who saved who?

The answer is both. Since neither a conference of 4 schools nor a conference of 5 schools could retain an autobid without a special exemption.

not sure why you keep trumpeting this little factoid. But if you're suggesting the league should retain the CCHA name, there's no way they'll give up the WCHA brand regardless of where the schools come from. If you just want recognition that the WCHA leftovers would've been in a world of hurt without the CCHA merger, nobody is disputing that. It also works both ways. You can let it go now.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

That leaves the WCHA with 9 teams. Hey, if they add UAH they have a nice, round number!

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

I hear UAH is dropping its hockey program and is therefore not interested in joining any conference.

No decision has been made in that regards, tho the lack of a firm position in support of keeping the program by the administration is naturally making any potential conferences wary. The latest rumblings this weekend have interim president meeting with both McLeod (WCHA) and the UAH alum/fundraising leader (Nathan Bowen) between now and Oct 18, so the timing of BG's decision fits in nice with that.

Sounds like a little bitterness there. I just look back at some of the comments from WCHA fans about throwing the CCHA a life raft back in August. The bottom line is they'd both be in trouble without the other.

I see. I missed the original exchange about life rafts.

Re: CCHA teams will join WCHA

Yeah, that'll happen.
Probably right. Besides, it'll be easier for HE, and better for college hockey in general, if they just poach a team from another league, leaving that league to deal with an odd numbered situation.

Hey, if I were asked, I'd take UAH in a heartbeat. No one is asking me. I doubt Joe B or anyone else at HEA has UAH on speed dial.
