Canada IS hockey

Re: Canada IS hockey

Hmmm, the Swiss are really coming along. This is what kills their game.

Looks to me like they had their veteran goaltender Slongo in net for just over 55 minutes for 53 SOG and 16 GA. Dunno... but if I have Florence Schelling on my bench I certainly would have given her the start against Canada.

Reminds of the beating the Bemidji goalie took last year, on national television no less. And she's real good.

Re: Canada IS hockey

Why did Canada only take 10 forwards to this tournament? It's fine if you don't want to take a tournament like this all that seriously with roster selection, but surely the extra two or three spots could have been given to other up-and-comers they were trying to give some NT time. Are they leaving those stalls empty out of respect for unavailable players or something?

Commitments probably. That time of year. And when you think about it, only two teams competing. :)

I've always wondered if, and how, the growth of Division I & III women's hockey will have an effect on national programs. If I'm not mistaken, there's a national camp in Canada coming up in a couple weeks which will be the first full week of practices for some university teams.

I assume that it would have a positive effect, eventually. They will find the time. Other countries have to get on board to strengthen a world presence for women's hockey, especially if they ever want to get a descent pro league off the ground. If there are more opportunities, the game then becomes more competitive for those spots. Foresight is the key; plenty of room for expansion. Better education through tougher competition and balance. National programs can only get better, hopefully; but the economy, well that's another matter. :)

Re: Canada IS hockey

I can't see how women's hockey will continue as an Olympic sport when there are really only 2 teams. I think you may have a Women's Softball scenario on your hands very soon unless the rest of the world gets a lot better, very quickly [and if you think that's going to happen, good luck].

The main difference is that the venue cost for women's hockey is nothing in an Olympics that isn't bulging at the seams with events. It's easier to keep pointing out that more girls are playing and that having it in in the Olympics is vital for the growth outside of Canada and the U.S. when you don't have to justify the costs of building the arenas at the same time. It's not like they have to build a hockey rink with different dimensions from the men.

I'm not saying it's in the clear, but it's a much different fight than women's softball.

The Olympics is about a lot more than the athletic competition. It is important to keep in mind that the Olympics is a business and a pretty successful business at that.

It is also important to differentiate between the Summer and Winter games.

Every winter games host city already has to have the required hockey building for the unquestionably successful men's hockey tournament. You can't fill the building for the two and a half weeks of the TV schedule with only men's hockey. The building is there, if you hold a women's tournament history shows that tickets can be and are sold for women's hockey. Tickets sold for one sided games between either of the two powers and the unfortunate also inviteds are still tickets sold, cash in the till. In addition, women's hockey, and again, even women's hockey games between the two powers and any of the unfortunate also inviteds, help fill the TV schedule until the really big Winter Olympics event (women's figure skating in case you hadn't noticed) begins. Filling the TV schedule is also cash in the till. It seems to me that if you look at the business side that women's hockey within the context of the business of the Winter Olympics is doing just fine, thank you very much, and isn't likely to be subject to any Summer Olympics softball scenario any time soon.

Here's an article that answers some of the questions posed on this thread concerning the tournament in Finland:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2011/08/31/sp-12nations-wed.html

While I cheer for the Canucks (Unless they play my native home nation :) ), it is good for the game in general that the Fins and the Swedes are starting to win the odd game over the US and Canada. More competition will lead to a better chance of the game surviving on the olympic program in 2018 and 2022.

Sandbagging, for the good of the game. :)

I know you meant to say Development, for the good of the game... ;)

I like the fact that they had three rook tenders in the lineup and getting some minutes.

Beware the Russian Bear however...

If the Kremlin wants a competative National Womens team for Sochi and beyond...the Kremlin will get one.

The Canadian girls just like to give the rest of the world a false sense of security in these short-turnaround events where there isn't as much time to prepare. When the Olympic years roll around and the Canadian girls go through that boot camp called Centralization, they are Golden, pun intended! No problem with this American, though, as long as there are former Ohio State Buckeyes playing for them (LOL)! I am completely neutral in those gold medal games when there are former Buckeyes playing for Team Canada. I cannot bring myself to root against those Canadian girls who have worn the Scarlet & Gray for Ohio State. I sincerely hope Olympic Women's Hockey survives, even if it means a little "development" at these other tournaments. College women's hockey shouldn't be the end of these young ladies' careers.
