Canada IS hockey

Re: Canada IS hockey

OnMAA are you a Habs fan?
Nope. Where would you get such a silly notion. Pretty much anti Habs. Back in the days of the Battle of Quebec, used to cheer loudly for Les Nordiques and their coach "Le Petit Tigre". How is that for a monster :D. As a fan who used to cheer on Chechoslovakia agains the Russian Red Army back in the 70's, became a Nordique fan when the Stastny's moved over, around the same time as I did. I still have the #26 Nordique sweater at home.

Re: Canada IS hockey

Just a question, I was looking at the University of Calgary Dinos info, seeing how Iya Gavrilova did tonight for them.. and saw that Hayley Wickenheiser got a game misconduct, and then later a gross misconduct late in their game tonight.. just curious what might have led to that, having not actually seen a gross misconduct listed on a score sheet. Sounds like that Canada West league is as 'tough' as the USHL here from the amount of penalties

She had some choice words and gestures for the ref after she scored the winner.

Re: Canada IS hockey

Now I ask you..... is that any way for a recipient of the Order of Canada to act? :o

It might be considered unbecoming of a Companion but the Officers are a bunch of rogues anyway, they play by their own rules. And I doubt abusing a hockey official is something the Advisory Council considers un-Canadian. :D

I'd have the Advisory Council run it by Allan Eagleson....you know, just to make sure it passes the litmus test. ;)

This brings Five Minutes for Fighting to a whole new level....

Two famous 73 year old CFL'ers, and bitter rivals, duke it out at a pre Grey Cup (CFL championship) alumni event this weekend:

Now THAT is funny. Always hated that big mouth Mosca; finally got the mouthful he deserves. :D Unbelievable how these guys couldn't control themselves. I guess it will always be in the blood. Ya gotta win.

I know this is not hockey, but vintage Canadian comedy for our American friends.....

The End of Movember by Rick Mercer.......hilarious:

P.S....Hockey Angle....He did a recent stint with the Canadian Sledge Hockey team....
you can see that here... http://www.youtube.com/mercerreport#p/search/0/FiDvpFeipEE

This thread is reserved for the discerning hockey fan...you can post whatever you want here. Seymore said so...

I had the opportunity last weekend to see both the Bronze and Gold medal sledgehockey games out at the Winsport. It was awesome...a real war out there. If you ever get a chance to go see these guys at this level...don't pass it up

Re: Canada IS hockey

So despite coming up short in the semi-final (an embarassing 40 minutes followed by one of the more stressful third periods I've ever seen) this World Juniors will be the most successful one yet, pushing the $20M mark. TSN wont be happy as they've paid their money already and they haven't had to deal with a gold-medal game not involving Canada in a decade.

But back to the money: 50% will go to Hockey Canada, 35% to the CHL, 10% to Hockey Alberta and I assume the last 5% will go to the IIHF. According to a Gazette article Hockey Canada paid quite a bit of money ("millions of dollars") to ensure four more tournaments in the next ten years and pays for all the other teams' pre-tournament costs. Selling out every game (because you had to buy ticket packages for all the games to get the medal games) at two NHL arenas meant that this tournament set an IIHF record for attendance at any tournament, not just the World Juniors.

This tournament made $20M, Saskatoon and Ottawa each made $15M, Vancouver back in 2006 made about $9M all with similar payout breakdowns as this one. By comparison the Women's World Championships in Ottawa guaranteed a $500,000 profit (though they're probably going to pass the million dollar mark since the Winnipeg tournament made just under $800K). The money Hockey Canada is getting is going (in part) "to recruitment and retention initiatives, e-learning programs and an upgrade to the online registration system used by every minor hockey association."

Big business this stuff is. They haven't even tapped into Toronto and Montreal for the World Juniors yet. And if Ottawa sells out for the Women's Worlds (with a nice profit to go along with it) then even the women will have outgrown the junior hockey markets.

As an aside, the women's centralization budget for 2010 was $3.5M and will probably go up to ~$5M for Sochi.
