Given how tight Trump has been with the Clintons and various Democrat donations until recent years, I'm tossing my hat into the conspirtorial ring and saying he's doing this to help Hilary and somehow get a big payday (rescinding of some law or the push for another) from her after the election.

I've heard that rumor floating around. I'm not sure on that. He's always seemed like a self preserving optimist to me. Its true, he's not a typical GOP candidate...but it just seems to me that he's kind of doing it to gain publicity. What do you want when you have anything you want? To make a public splash in the national scene I guess. And to that end, it seems he's kind of winging it along the way. But we may find out...and we may never know.

Yeah except that wouldnt be where the GOP loses them and you know it. Trump is going to pull fundies from all over and every white male who doesnt vote GOP is a huge loss cause White Males are pretty much their only base.

But you do have to admit that the fundies tend to be congregated in states that are bleeding red. So what if he pulls 5% away from the south? Loss of thousands of white males in Georgia is just as irrelevant to the GOP as losing thousands of African American votes in NY would be to the Dems.

It would be weird for the Fundies to rally behind Trump, about the least spiritual man I can think of, but their patron saint is The Actor, who was the model of Hollywood spiritual superficiality. If you suck up to them then they love you, whatever your real world behavior. I believe Jesus had some words about the Pharisees on the subject.

The battleground states with important Fundy centers are FL, NC, VA and CO -- any three of which the GOP has to win to have any shot . So it would matter, though I don't think it would happen. Running for president is a lot of work, and Trump is lazy.

Some are Jesus-philiacs, some are the loonies that live in log cabins ready for the militia revolt, some are tea partiers who government handouts but take more government handouts than poor people and some are the real wackadoos like Flaggy. To me, fundies are the people who watch Faux News and think they are too moderate.
If Trump gets these people to vote for him (cause he represents them because all he does is provoke fights like a troll) then the GOP will lose pretty much all the battleground states.
