Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

Is home ec still taught in schools? I asked this on Bluesky but don't think I saw a good answer.

im not talking like sewing a pillow or anything but basic **** like how to cook a chicken breast or how to make a basic budget and make wise financial choices.

My nephews born in ‘92 and ‘94 both took it at their local middle school. I don’t know if their younger step sisters took it.

It was at my daughter's middle school but I think it was only a semester.

911 call near forest lake this afternoon reported an Amazon truck ran into their house and was attempting to back out and leave

you have drivers peeing in bottles to not get punished, no shit the driver tried to leave

That's good to hear St Clown & Jim. It's a class I didn't have much respect for in my 20s but like, it was really important. Shop seems less important but I'm glad I took all of the classes they offered.

I wish I took autos. But I honestly didn't have the time.

Honest question. If Zuckerberg so badly wants tik tok banned so more people use his shit apps, isn’t he gonna be pissed off when trump delays or cancels the ban?

How does one decide which billionaire to suck off on a given day?

There were rumors just before the shutdown that Zuck was going to buy it / enough of it to satisfy the government.

Caught in the crossfire of the TikTok ban, handheld app Marvel Snap has been shut down as well despite ByteDance divesting itself from Nuverse, the publisher of the game.

Nuverse, nor the other game studio Second Dinner, who maintain the app, were aware they would be caught in this.

Essentially all apps, former and current, that were once ByteDance owned, have been shut down.

My impression from dealing with Gen Z so far is that they are the most sensible and savvy generation in the last century. They don't think they are special. That's been the conceit of every generation from the Boomers through the Millenials. Gen Zers appear to know (1) they are f-cked, (2) they will never have a voice, (3) everybody regardless of age is full of sh-t but (4) nobody else seems to be able to admit it.

I think they will fix things. They just won't fix them the way we want, because we don't understand what's wrong, and that's why we f-cked everything up.

We had 3 consecutive sh-t, self-absorbed generations. Gen Z breaks the streak.

I’m sorry, but aren’t you the guy who doesn’t believe in generations? Anyways, I’ll have what you’re having.

Oh no! Anyway. :)

Besides, KitKot will be up and running in no time.

Certainly dependent upon the region and/or district, and the perceived importance the School Board places on such content. In our district (Southern Tier, NY), all students take FACS (Food and Consumer Science) in middle school (aka-Jr High), which involves basic cooking and shopping exposure. There is a personal finance course available in High School, but not a required course.

Southern states Boards may put emphasis on caring for babies. (I kid!!!) :0)

I graduated 30yrs ago, but ”back in the day” our Home Ec (Capital district in NY) was a requirement in High School, and extended beyond basic cooking. I recall making a tan-color gym/book bag, which was put to use for quite some time.

I made a pillow which is still in tremendous shape today despite being almost 25 years old.

No offense sir, but if you graduated college 35 years ago, my guess is you graduated high school closer to 40 years ago. :)

Of course generations aren't real and generalizing about people based on age is dumb. I'm just going based on the SSS of people I have personally met and talked with enough to get some idea of their chops. I'm in an industry where this runs into the hundreds and it skews young. It is of course a trivial sample, but it's still a fair number of independent trials. Based on that I am more impressed with the youngest people than any other cohort.

We typically have the same problem judging younger generations as Maine residents do judging black people. They only see them on police reports and sports events. We only see young people doing stupid things on TikTok for clicks. It's not a representative sample.

As evidenced by this last election, most of them are ****ing stupid and gullible.

But that's because most people are f-cking stupid and gullible.

To start with, cut off everybody from the median and below. They're cattle. I'm talking about humans. Those humans are themselves distributed into smart and dumb ones.

Among those humans, even the smartest ones older than around 30 are hopeless caught up in obsolete ways of defining issues -- ways which are played out, have no true explanatory value, and clearly do not lead to results. They (we) still obsess over capitalism vs communism, a dichotomy now approaching 200 years old.

The young are always, by definition, more able to absorb current reality because they were formed by a world closer to it in time. They aren't analogizing it, they are experiencing it. They will, of course, harden and become obsolete just like every other generation before them. But even their ossified perspective will still be decades closer to a fit of what is real than say mine.

From what I have read this is actually a thing. The Trad Way is real.

In 1977 (JFC) I took Home Ec in rotation with Typing and Metal Shop. To give you an idea of how seriously we took it, we gradually dismantled our sewing machine and threw it bit by bit out the second story window over a period of weeks.

Learned to type, though.

I regret not taking shorthand; my god that would have been helpful.

Complaining about the intelligence of youngsters is a time honored tradition that dates back to, well, the beginning of time. Congrats. You guys all made it to middle aged.

Closely followed by complaining about their work ethic, attention span, and seriousness.

One interesting thing, though. The other thing is complaining about their morals, and I don't think anybody complains about Gen Z morals. If anything they seem like terrified prudish shut ins. Boomers were the whore generation (thank you, ladies!!!) and America hasn't gotten over that yet.
