Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

My impression from dealing with Gen Z so far is that they are the most sensible and savvy generation in the last century. They don't think they are special. That's been the conceit of every generation from the Boomers through the Millenials. Gen Zers appear to know (1) they are f-cked, (2) they will never have a voice, (3) everybody regardless of age is full of sh-t but (4) nobody else seems to be able to admit it.

I think they will fix things. They just won't fix them the way we want, because we don't understand what's wrong, and that's why we f-cked everything up.

We had 3 consecutive sh-t, self-absorbed generations. Gen Z breaks the streak.

What gen z people are you dealing with? This is not my experience at all. Them being incredibly cynical of everything and adopting an eff it attitude has really saved us so far, hasn’t it? Also, don’t feed their weird fantasy of having no economic opportunities. It is simply false.

Another question, what millennials have you dealt with? I can count the number of them that don’t think they are effed on one hand.

I can’t predict the future so they very well may end up fixing things, but I highly doubt it.

All in all I refuse to buy into all the generation talk too heavily. Feels like yet another way people with money divide us. People are people.

I'll bet I could find a dozen posts by kep stating that EXACT last paragraph almost word for word.

I was going to say, he’s been the one banging on the drum on generations not existing. Idk where this 180 came from, and most of all giving credit to a generation that has seen the largest conservative youth voting bloc since, ever I think?

Weird. My impression of Gen Z is that they're smartphone addicts who barely communicate with anyone by analog means.

So then you never taught Gen Z. Gen Z and the generation after it are beyond self absorbed. I never saw a Gen Xer stand up in the middle of class to livestream a tiktok dance and then tell the teacher to "f off". That happened to me multiple times. And it is getting worse because the parents (people my age...elder Gen X or Millennial) of these students refuse to let their children be punished.

I will say, you really do stick to this character. Like a 1950s wrestler.

Try telling them about pre-existing conditions and lifetime caps. They literally don't believe that was a thing and hand wave away the catastrophic effects they had on people. They give absolutely no credit for the massive difference it has made for people seeking care in the US.

Couple that with the fact that none of them have experienced a recession. Everyone else has experienced multiple. They have absolutely no understanding of economics and pain that comes with recessions without a safety net. The other frightening thing is they don't understand home economics either. Seemingly more eat out and have no idea how to cook nor the willingness to learn. Easier to order a burrito taxi and then complain that it costs $30.
Like i said, a lot of knowledge, zero comprehension of it.

One thing I’ve noticed among my Gen Z coworkers: How basic their tastes are. To hear them talk about video games you’d think the only games ever made were COD or some other shooter COD clone. Food is all basic fast food. TV is whatever their algorithm feeds them. Music is whatever their algorithms feed them.

No. As evidenced by this last election, most of them are ****ing stupid and gullible. They’re undereducated, they have little clue to actual history, and they’re easily susceptible to any kind of propaganda from apps like TikTok. How do you think idiots like Rogan and Tate maintain their popularity?

The biggest problem I’ve seen with my younger Gen Z coworkers is that, thanks to a lifetime with a smartphone in their hands, is that they know a lot about different things, but they have zero comprehension of it. In terms of actual knowledge, most of them know nothing.

Yeah...unfortunately 40 years of Republicans screwing with education (especially NCLB) has lead to a society filled with Don Kings. They can say the words but they have no idea what they mean or how they came about to have those meanings. They don't have to know, all the information they need is in the palm of their hand. (to be fair, the average American reads at a 6th grade level so everyone is some level of stupid)

This leads to a double kick to the groin...you have a bunch of people who have no knowledge but also have no sense of nuance or ability to decipher truth from fiction. They read it on the internet and because for their whole life the internet is where all information is, they take it as fact. Especially if it is repeated ad nauseum. That is why frauds like Rogan (or Trump) appeal to them, he doesn't make them think he talks like they do. He makes no sense, he has no real information he just talks surface level about topics and says the stupid thoughts we all have but never lend credence too. He talks about how Big Pharma forced vaccines and medicine on us but then suppress information about other medicines because...reasons? They are too friggin dumb and lazy to realize that Big Pharma makes the other drug too so why would they want to suppress it? They believe Biden had Facebook cover up the Hunter Biden laptop because they distrust government like HGH-Boy but no one ever reminds them the "Government" was Trump not Biden. They can't even use their long term memory anymore the cell phone has completely warped their brain. They believe the Wildfire Misinformation because hey...California has a lot of homeless people and they do make fires so obviously that makes the most sense! And obviously California is mismanaging everything because why is there not more water? Why can't the planes just fix everything what difference do the 100 knot wins make? I mean they once lit a fire while camping they are obviously experts. (Bill Burr's rant about this was great)

I mean think about it, there were women at ASU (yes I know not exactly a bastion of educational greatness but still) who were excited Trump won because he was going to protect Abortion Rights!

Look generational names are dumb...my personality isn't different because I was born 2 years before my SO. (I am Gen X she is Millennial) Its age and experiences that matter. The kids usually suck and the old people usually wont let go of power and think they are more valuable than they are. But there are other factors at play too. Many of us remember life before the internet. Almost all of us remember life before smartphones. That changes perspective and (in theory) gives us more opportunity for insight into what we are reading/seeing and to filter. They don't have that. Hell in one of my courses we teach media literacy and my god it is scary how illiterate on the subject these people are.

As for TikTok, Bytedance is bending over backwards for Trump, he will stop the ban. He will be seen as a hero to the morons who think Theo Vonn is where you should go for your political opinions.

Cooking takes patience (I suck at it but I try for this very reason) and they can barely stand to watch a video that lasts more than 2 minutes.

Gen X and all non-college white males went conservative hard.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/202...ons/exit-polls

Right, but comparatively 2024 was much more conservative among 18-24 and 18-29 (since NBC didn't provide 18-24 in 2016). In 2016 it was Clinton +19, then Biden +24, then it was only Harris +10. The 2024 Age by Race seems to indicate a HARD turn by young Latinos towards Trump. Went from +41 to +6.

God I just realized from your last sentence that they're the first Gen Algorithm. Such a better term than alpha and beta.

Is home ec still taught in schools? I asked this on Bluesky but don't think I saw a good answer.

im not talking like sewing a pillow or anything but basic shit like how to cook a chicken breast or how to make a basic budget and make wise financial choices.

That would make too much sense.

I remember having to take home ec and shop class
