After less than a week of rumors, Union Pacific makes a bid to buy Norfolk Southern for $85 Billion in a stock-and-cash deal. This would create a the first coast-to-coast transcontinental railroad company in the US.

CSX is also rumored to be open to a merger, and BNSF may take advantage to maintain itself against UP.

This comes just a year after Canadian Pacific purchased the Kansas City Southern company to create the first North American railroad with direct connection to Mexico.
