Business, Economics, and Taxes: Eat Cereal for Dinner

With the Supreme Court upholding the TikTok ban, there was a sudden push back from thousands of TikTok users who in unison decided if the US Government is going to ban TikTok because of a hypothetical chance of propaganda influence, they're going to hand the CCP their data directly. These users started signing up for the Chinese Instagram/Pinterest app Rednote (小红书国际版 or literally "Little Red Book," which side note is absolutely hilarious if you're even slightly history literate).

One of the unintended consequences of the US Government trying to avoid Chinese propaganda was the new American users to the app are also bypassing Chinese propaganda by diving directly into daily life in China. Elementary school children are asking Americans for help with translations. Chinese citizens are helping Americans translate Mandarin. Americans are seeing life in China first hand, and China is seeing American life as well. And it's not going well for the public opinion of the US Government.

With hindsight being 20/20, more and more pieces are being put together on how much Meta and Musk worked behind the scenes with both Government parties (coupled with the Boomers of congress's ineptitude) to single out TikTok to drive those users back to Twitter/X and Facebook.

One of the interesting things I have seen regarding Facebook is how much their apps, especially Messenger, are utilized to sniff the network the device is connected to, and does a deep dive into all the public information on other devices connected to the same network.
(See this TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT212Yc3S/ )
This is why some of the questions asked in the TikTok hearing didn't make sense at the time. "Does TikTok connect to wifi?" Because Meta does these things, and was concerned the new kid on the block was interfering with its game.

TL;DR - Americans are finding out the US was really the bad place all along.

It’ll be all fine and dandy until the Dump administration starts jailing people who download Rednote for “treason” or whatever.

Oh, and while we're at it, someone needs to dig up the $5 gas thread...

Look I support the TikTok ban for a dozen reasons...but i also support the CFPB going after Meta and all the tech companies being broken up (especially Google, Apple and Meta) because of Anti-Trust violations. Tech needs a reckoning...and whether it is is taking them down or the AI bubble exploding something must be done.

I finally saw a clip of Zuck being cucked by Rogan...this country is phucking doomed.

SEC files suit against Elmo for securities violations

duh, he’ll just eliminate the sec because he’s so brilliant. I mean he has to be right, he got rich!!

He better...because when they look into the books for Tesla they are going to see he has been cooking the books.

Just stop. This is particularly silly. Not because I think the US is innocent but because this this excuse making for the Chinese government is a pretty textbook case of republican whataboutism but leftishly.

Of course the US government is going to protect its interests. But if you think that among two bad actors the US is the worse of the two even in surveillance, I've got a bridge to sell you.

The TikTok ban is fine. We shouldn't be allowing foreign actors to weaponize social media. Which is exactly what is happening here. TikTok is full of brainrot more so than almost every other platform I've encountered. Even present day twitter. Everyone is susceptible to propaganda and TikTok has been particularly good at it.

The only reason you're defending it so vociferously is because you are a very active user. Like most of us, you'll do anything to defend that sweet sweet dopamine mine. Social media in general sucks. There's something about TikTok and other video based platforms that are particularly sucky.

TikTok is evil on many levels ask any teacher. And if you want to know where the Gaza War propaganda spread the most it wasn't Twatter or Facebook, it was TikTok and it wasn't even close. Many youth were weaponized against the Dems because of it. Yes some people use TikTok for good, but the non-experts there spreading their BS and making it look all cool and flashy (or worse, professional) are no better than the Dudepro podcasters that speak out of their butt. The problem with all social media is if you dont know what to look for, you can't filter the fake from the real.

And there is no timeline where the Chinese Government is better than ours even with Trump. They lied about the COVID deaths exponentially more than we even had COVID deaths. Their people have zero civil liberties, their entire economy is fraudulent and they basically blackmail the Western World into not recognizing Taiwan by threatening global economic collapse. To pretend they are anything but one of the worst actors in the world is to sound like GOPers saying Putin is a good guy.

America is awful...but they don't even rank compared to China. (and Russia) Hell even Iran ranks below them.

I agree. In my in and out of jobs within the defense industry, the stories I could tell you about the Chinese... Heck, the stories I could tell you about a seemingly innocuous company like Huawei will blow your mind.

If they TikTok’s TOS and ridiculous censorship of content is bad…

”I got banned because I talked about Winnie the Pooh?”

I saw a few comments saying they're trying to not get banned on Rednote and are "Just big Taylor Swift fans" when 1989 is mentioned...

*edit* I can't find the image and didnt save it, but someone on X posted "Ask Rednote users about Tiananmen Square, ask about Winnie the Pooh." And was replied to with just "CIS" which had a notice from X that the reply comment violated the terms and was being muted.

My wife was informed this morning that her job is being eliminated, and she'll be laid off effective 2/14 with 11 weeks of severance. She's a Medicaid care coordinator for a large insurance company. As she predicted in the aftermath of the election, they're preemptively laying off people in her role & department in anticipation of the ACA getting repealed.
