Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Kirsti Hakala is out for the St. Cloud weekend with a concussion so Jessica Wong is moving to defense for this series...Fisher isn't listed as a defenseman in the newspaper preview for the series either so they're skating 4 D..

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

As for this getting to the second page I guess I've been too busy this week knowing I'll be down and back (Yep, I drive the distance both days) to St. Cloud both days that I neglected USCHO for a couple days ;) It's not as bad as USCHO neglecting USCHO though (I realize Brian's in Finland also).. last week's previews are still on the women's front page!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Anyway, very good news on Kim![/URL]

Somehow I missed this article . . . that is great news for Santa and for team Sweden. Her goal to see UMD out with a National title next year doesn't sound so bad either!!!:D

Go Santa . . .

Go DOGS!!!!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

UMD had 14 players (plus 3 goaltenders) for this weekend as everyone knows, but then lost Laura Fridfinnson for the third period with her shoulder going out again in the second period. She skated her normal shifts in the second but every time she got bumped she was done with the play.

Wong was rusty at D, getting deeked a few times, and especially bad once by Felicia Nelson. Sarah Murray got beat on multiple chances when she tried to beat someone to the puck, either getting knocked down, or off it to give up a scoring chance.

Stephanie Lenz got one second period shift, and played a regular shift in the third period with Friddy out.

The best thing for UMD is they stayed out of the penalty box for the most part, only giving St. Cloud 3 powerplay chances (but giving up a goal on one.) I don't know if Tuominen would have made *that* much difference BUT if Posa especially were there to play D and let Wong play forward it might have at least kept the game within a goal. Amazingly, Katie Wilson and Emmanuelle Blais were Even in the +/- rating.

I want to say this experience of playing a lot for the players who don't see much ice will help come the playoffs when Tuominen and Posa are in Vancouver, but that's a long way off still.

Tuominen 100% in Vancouver roster. Posa 25%. There are clearly 7 Ds in front of her. Some of them facing an injury could open a ticket to Vancouver. But odds are not for her now.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Not that there was a lot to cheer for from the UMD side, and I wasn't there shooting SCSU, but anyway some pictures from last night

Hoping for better tonight but we'll see :) 75% of the first two periods were pictures of Laura Fridfinnson since she always had the puck.. the whole team has to step up whether she's able to go or not, and she has to stay away from the boards if she does play.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

It's easy to "scoop" us when the local paper doesn't even pay attention!

I would say that Martin did make it clear last season she was coming back next year to UMD, and is even listed in this season's media guide as doing just so.... :)

I wasn't talking about that.. I was talking about the knee surgery she FINALLY had.. she'd always put it off and just rehabbed and played with the pain every time. I think the extra time where she would normally be in Duluth to study that she could take after the surgery helped make that decision.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

There's something about Shannon Miller's teams that pick it up the second night after a tough first outing, especially when there are injured or missing players.

The third line of Libby Guzzo, Kacy Ambroz, and Justine Fisher worked their butts off as all three lines played consistently, and that work paid off with an Ambroz goal in the third period (2nd career), a great wrist shot through a St. Cloud players legs and top shelf (Picture of that didn't work well, oops.) Guzzo set the tone for that line early in the first period with a hard slapshot from in close, even though it was saved it was big for the line to contribute early.

Gina Dodge really needs to score a goal.. she keeps getting close and good opportunities every game I've seen...and is really good at taking up that space in front of the opposing goaltender on powerplays. When she does get her first goal it's almost going to be a given that it's a powerplay tip on a shot from the point.

Audrey Cournoyer set up the first 3 UMD goals, Katie Wilson scored twice, and Vanessa Thibault scored (a powerplay goal also) for the second night in a row. Jenny Harss stopped all 24 shots she faced, and her defense played so much better than Friday night that you'd think other people were in the jerseys!

Fridfinnson played the entire game, scoring the first goal of the game, and though she's got the bad shoulder, still got into the corners some, as did the entire team, maybe taking notice of her play?

I forgot to mention the old man walking around in Goofer attire! At least he wasn't wearing RED!

I'm 99% sure I know who that was (it wasn't me -- I was home in Eagan) and he was suffering from the withdrawal of the Gophers being idle  -- particularly after he and I saw some of them at the Gopher football game earlier in the day.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I was told last night that the 10 year celebration/anniversary of the program will be during the upcoming (in 2 weeks) Mankato series.

Sorry to invade your thread, but I had a similar thought. Its almost as if both teams traded jerseys from each night.

Friday my Huskies just seemed to outplay the bulldogs while getting the puck to just bounce right to there sticks and on Saturday, the opposite seemed to be the case. The game on Saturday really seemed to lean even more towards UMD after Hirsch lost her temper and got that double minor.

From the SCSU point of view, the only thing good on Saturday was when Nixon got ****ed after coming into the game and pushed a bulldog down and into the net after a save.

No need to apologize.. there's not a ton of posting here and Binnyrus only posts during the week so that's one of 3 of us not posting!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Sounds to me like the 'Dogs just weren't mentally ready for the Friday night game. I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall when Coach Miller talked to the team after that one!! Who knows??

I don't like the sound of Friddy's injury. It would be great if she could take a game or two off . . .

I'm glad they rallied (or SCSU dropped off) for the Saturday game. It would have been hard for them to take 2 losses there!! Seems like getting two wins at OSU could be a challenge . . .

What a strange season it's going to be . . .

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

The thing about Friddy's injury is.. UMD usually has a bye week by now! With the 3 non-conference weekends this year they've bi-passed the bye and she hasn't had that week of no-contact to heal some.

It's still early in THIS season but I'd really like to hear that Friddy hits the WEIGHTS between her junior and senior years.. she needs some extra muscle for all the work she does along the boards. She did a great job Saturday keeping up with HER game while not getting punished as much as she did Friday.

There was a better UMD fan turnout on Saturday as well.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Even though UMD has 2 games at hand on OSU... this coming series is huge with OSU second in the WCHA for the time being...UMD can't go there and only split and stay behind them.

Wisconsin is in non conference also so it's big to get ahead of them also since we're tied right now and need to win the games that give them 2 at hand to catch up later.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Audrey Cournoyer is WCHA Rookie of the Week for her efforts against St. Cloud, especially her 3 assists on Saturday.
