Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I know it was a chalk talk item.. from comments of those that were there.. but anyway .. it's "official" on the UMDBulldogs.com now that Katie Gilderman will be on the team the entire season. Originally there was talk of having her only until Steck came back from injury but what sense does it make to only have two goaltenders on a roster (obviously!)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I didn't realize during the game but Fridfinnson didn't play the whole game, after the bumps she took on Friday night she has some sort of shoulder injury that hopefully is nothing serious, just a way to get her off the ice with the game going UMD's way... especially if the 4 Nations Cup takes away Tuominen/Posa

Apparently dislocated her shoulder in Friday's game...had it popped back into place in the dressing room and continued the game...but couldn't make it through 3 periods on Saturday.

That obviously happened when had her legs taken out from her going after the puck in corner.. it launched her sideways into the boards.. the same people who yelled for UMD to play classy when North Dakota got their 5 minute major for slashing were saying yelling that she dove to draw a penalty (though no penalty was called..and obviously wasn't a dive.)

This group of Sioux fans was very vocal all weekend, which is good, but not always vocal in the right way... Harss made a huge glove save over her shoulder on Saturday.. so one girl stands up and yells "I could have made that save in my sleep!" I wish I could retort "then go home and go to bed" but can't do that anymore... some of their other comments definitely weren't fit for a family audience.

Not just from an injury standpoint, but also because it allows goalies to take a breather during practice.(Small area games can be brutal)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Rasmussen-i agree one of the ,if not the best series of her career with 1 g and 4a!! She definetly appears to be embracing her leadership role and working hard on both sides of the ice.....

Also, it is pretty cold to have someone help you out while you're short, have them put in all of the work, then boot them during the season.

Those were my thoughts exactly, plus it would send the wrong message.

Given that she was an unknown quantity, I think it is understandable that there was some reserve regarding making a commitment to her too quickly. Actually, the UMD coaching staff, with Coach Miller in particular, has anything but a reputation for coldness, insensitivity or indifference when it comes to the players. Given that, I would guess that the hope from the get-go was that they would be able to keep her for the whole year.

It is great to see Iya Gavrilova is back, tho too sadly not on the ice. While plenty took pot shots at her, if not directly, then indirectly thru 2008, she is a talented player, who was simply fun to watch.

Have posted photos from Saturday night's UND game. Have a few more to go up yet from each game and will add more from the Goofer game and the St. Cloud series. Use the link below. (Binnyrus, thank you for your compliment of the Harss photo. I like it a lot too. I am finding that she is very fascinating and fun to photograph).

Definitely.. but that was a statement made before they'd found someone... they were looking for someone until Steck returned from injury. An interesting note though.. if Gilderman sees any ice time and outplays Steck does she get a shot to make the team behind Martin (if she comes back healthy) and Harss next season. Steck is still a complete mystery, as she didn't play well when it was her time to step up and be the #1 when Martin got hurt.

I really will be watching the 4 Nations results/stats to see how Martin is playing. She gave up a lot of goals in the last round of International play and probably needs another surgery on that knee but that would probably mean that her career is over.. but that's obviously speculation because of statements made where she was forgoing surgery last year to attempt to rehab it back.

If the 25th birthday rule indeed means a player can't play on or after their 25th birthday she misses the post season next season anyway

Another quick note.. Heidi Pelttari won't be playing in the 4 Nations tourney if anyone looks for her name.. she broke either a leg or ankle training to be on the UMD soccer team this fall I was told, and is just off crutches this week and is in a walking boot now.

Euro Hockey Tour was played last weekend in Stockholm, Sweden. In final game Sweden won Finland 1-0 (0-0, 0-0, 1-0). Martin between the pipes. She was nominated the best goalie for the tournament. Game was a quite close one. Finland did not have potential college players there. Tuominen and Posa (UMD), Raty and Jalosuo (Gophers), Tuominen (Ohio), Tikkinen and Leinonen (Min Mankato), Pelttari injured, Pehkonen ex Providence.

That's good. I kind of wondered based on how roster moves were made during the last two Olympic years.

I hope this doesn't negatively impact her chance of playing at the Olympics. Best wishes for a complete recovery.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I think the Gilderman decision came to two things: 1.) Did she have enough talent and skill to play at the D-1 level - maybe not start, but enough to be a servicable back-up? And, after she realized the full committment was it really what she wanted to do? I think it was more of a two-way decision. Coach Miller was very clear that Katie stepping forward was a huge favor to the team, and by all appearances they're thrilled to have her.

I checked in with Heidi Pelttari at the chalk talk as well . . . she did indeed break an ankle . . . and is hoping to be ready for the Olympics.

I sure wish I could have seen the Friday UND game . . . it sounds like it was a crazy deal. I heard that the coach from UND asked for the 5 min major and game DQ for his own player . . . . anyone else hear that?? I wasn't there but I would assume that meant some discussion between coach and Ref before the penalty was assessed. Anyone see anything like that??

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

On the DQ for the UND player...Tom Hansen announced during Saturdays game that the UND coach made the decision to toss her.I had never heard of that happening but he obvisouly saw her pounce on Harss and thought it bad enough to warrant that type of call.

Fridays game was crazy and ridiclous...but the refs seemed to be keeping a better eye on things then in times past....they missed a few behind the play early, and then started to pay closer attention to the entire sheet of ice.....however there was no penalty called on the play that hurt Friddy :(
One of the refs started writing them down, as they were being called so quickly and so many(penaltys and palyers involved).

That seems like an extraordinary step for a coach to take. I guess I can see the point, but it almost seems like it could have been a more powerful statement if Idalski had done it himself. Clearly he must have felt she was playing out of control. Maybe just let her sit her (another) 2mn minor, and then let her sit the rest of the game. Maybe even dress her the next day but don't put her in. See how she'd like that. At any rate, could make for an interesting thread topic all on it's own.

Saturday's game seemed controlled . . . and it makes sense why some stuff was called so tight early on. Normally, I prefer to let the players skate and sort out the little stuff themselves - but given the wild ride from the night before I can see why that was never allowed to develop on Saturday.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

The player tossed by Idalski didnt dress on saturday either from what i heard.........I felt the refs were ready for Saturday after Fridays melee and kept control from the begining........

Could it be that the coach knew she would likely be called for a game misconduct and he was trying to lobby the ref for "just" a game DQ?

D2D -- reverse that thought. My guess was that Idalski was lobbying for the misconduct instead of the DQ because the DQ included a mandatory one-game suspension (which is why Williams sat on Saturday).

While the box score on collegehockeystats.net indicates only a major penalty for slashing, the UND-provided box score does list a DQ.
