Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Hey everyone-- been lurking here for a couple of years now so I finally decided to get an account.

I'm headed to the cities for work this weekend, anyone hitting up the game? I've only been to Ridder once, for playoff action, so I'm curious to sit among like minded people and possibly raise a little hell. Especially if the Dynamic Duo of Team Lick shows up. Gawd those guys were awful last week.

I'm glad you decided to post and I sure hope you hang around and continue to do so!!! Not enough Dog fans stick it out . . . it's a hard thing to be a fan of the best team in DI Women's hockey history!!! The Dogs and their coach get A LOT of grief - some warranted most of it not . . . so it can be easy to say "screw it". I hope you don't.

I don't think there's a person on this forum who've ever seen the Licks go at it that don't agree with you. Terrible, terrible, terrible. The Licks suck and there's just no doubt about it.

It's hard to put too much in to the Gopher series . . . this early in the season I guess it makes for a good measruing stick. But, UMD has not usually played all that well at Ridder - or the Goofs just seem to play really well there. I just hope the Dogs continue to show improvement with each weekend.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

The News Tribune confirmed on Gilderman.. though she didn't travel to Minneapolis as of this morning, pending NCAA clearance she'll be there. The knee surgery only allowed her to play one game last year but she says it's strong now.

<* Raises hand. *> In the context of WCHA refs, I believe that there are worse.

I have a few photos up from the St. Cloud series. Use the link at the bottom...hopefully, I got it right. Will add more as time allows. Late Sunday or Monday will post shots from tonight's game at Ridder.

The first pictrue of Harss coming out in the spotlight is a really, really beautiful picture. Well done!! I liked looking at all of them. Thanks.

I also wanted to say for anyone that hasn't seen them these pics by norskidotter from the UMD v SCSU will preview SCSU's new jerseys.

It looks like you're learned a bunch over the last year or two :) Next stop is noise reduction software that helps removed the spots and grain that comes from higher ISO indoor shots ;)

Sitting with Clint (the News Tribune photog) for part of the game probably helped also?

My shots from the St. Cloud series if ya missed them.

I can think of two in particular right off the top of my head....one shares a last name with a retired North Star defender..another I was hoping was done with refereeing the women's game when I saw he was working as a linesman for somemen's hockey the first weekend. (C.P... obviously!)

I had no idea Ludwig was going to be one of the referees this weekend but he hadn't seen UMD yet this season.. Doocy on the other hand..

As for the game, just looking at the game stats it seems UMD took a couple periods to wake up and actually play? Good to see Katie Gilderman on the stat sheet so her NCAA clearance came fast.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Pretty much what I expected from Minneapolis. Solid play but the mistakes the inexperience breeds. They weren't blown out and I think that's a big "win". The only other thought is that is would seem that Harss is getting her D1 legs . . . that will be a big plus for the Dogs.

I listened to Saturday's game and though it is always hard to get a real good feel for a game Tom Hansen calls, (what's his name Gilbert was doing "color" - maybe they follow the thread!! LOL!!) it seemed as if Raty came up huge for the Goofs. It sounded as if UMD could have had a couple on a less talented tender.

GO DOGS!!! Keep building, no letdowns!!

Whatever way you need to look at it to stay positive is good. Who was expecting blowouts? Why? There were six freshmen on the ice for Minnesota as well. There were things to be positive about for the Bulldog fan. I think Minnesota Duluth will really have to minimize opponents PP opportunities, somewhat obviously. I wouldn't expect the trend in shorties to continue. Those were quite surprising for me, against UMD.

Noora Räty was instrumental in the outcomes for sure. There were mistakes made in the Gopher D zone. I think she will be key to any Gopher success every time she plays this season. I don't think there's any way around goaltending being a large factor in WCHA team fortunes this season...I should say this season in particular.

I wasn't expecting any blowouts per se, (ie, UMD getting wiped out by the Goofs) but I would not have been surprised. Don't forget that UMD lost to RMU 4-1. To date still RMU's only win. Granted, first series of the year but when you see weak D and a shaky tender you do wonder what will happen against a top ranked opponent! From that perspective, anything could have happened.

Based on Saturday's game, UMD should limit their own PP chances!!! The Dogs have only allowed two PP goals so far (out of 30 PK situations). I'd take that stat any day. Obviously they need to work on the PP - something that is certainly getting to be a mantra with UMD - not a strong point over the last few years. I'd hope though that the two shorties by the Goofs will be an abberation as the year unfolds.

It will indeed be an interesting year in the WCHA.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

It's NOT a good thing when you've given up more short handed goals than the number of powerplay goals you've scored!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Okay . . . here's an idea about game watching. There are just a few UMD fans that post here regularly (and also attend games) so I thought maybe we could decide to watch a particular player or two in each home series and then compare notes here about strengths, weaknesses, attitude . . . all the stuff - afterward.

I think with so many new players, and if most people watch games the way I do - by following the puck - we miss a lot of stuff that happens away from the play. So, one way I could watch the game in a different way, and to become more familiar with new (or "old" faces) would be to focus on one or two specifically at least part of the time.

Anyone interested??

I think the obvious first choice is Harss.. considering that Kim Martin was interfered with heavily (mostly in the legal way) against the Sioux last year I expect nothing but that with the freshman in net to try and rile her. She handed it well against SCSU and it sounds like she wasn't too bad with it last weekend, but it will worth paying attention to considering she commented on it after the SCSU series.

The Sioux women have started off really slow this year, with only 5 goals in 4 games since beating Wisconsin 2-0, so maybe the above will turn out to mean nothing ;)

It's a little harder to focus and watch just one player while taking pictures of the game but we'll see. We need more UMD fans posting on the women's hockey side of USCHO to really make the idea work well.

Thibault is a player I'm interested in seeing progress this season if/when she learns to control her speed and use it as a weapon.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I would say Wong will be one to watch as she gets acclimated to the D-1 game (hopefully quickly).......and interesting also is the role Rasmussen as a senior, seems to have this year, anchoring the D as well as the privledge and responsibility of wearing that "A".........We will see.........i think the Dogs will fair well this weekend :)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I think Wong was "acclimated" and made the most impact from the start..

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Well i guess that is what we are talking about...watching individual players, are we only watching goal scoring? or the whole game?

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Great . . . some interest! Based on what's been said so far, and given that there's an entire season ahead of us why don't we start with one new face and one that's more familiar:

Jenny Harss and Jamie Rasmussen.

Again, I suggest we each try to focus somewhat on each player while watching the game. I know it'll be a challenge for me since I'm so into watching the puck.

And, Harss is also this week's featured player:

Also, there's a chalk talk tomorrow (Thursday Oct, 22) 6:30 at the Blackwoods in Proctor.
