Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Cournoyer and Posa I'm kind of neutral about right now... I need to pay more attention to them when the team gets home for the series after the Goofs.

Cournoyer absolutely undressed an SCSU defenceman in the second game which enabled her to get a good shot on VanDenakker...one of the most gorgeous moves I've seen in quite a while!!...VanDenakker made the initial stop but couldn't control the rebound as her momentum carried her to her left and the puck popped out into the crease to her right and Wilson, who was crashing the net, scored into a half open net...I think it was UMD's 1st goal of the game. All initiated by Cournoyer's stunning move...(that's another name Hansen has been having trouble with...I think he's a talented, knowledgeable and entertaining commentator but maybe he should do a little homework on some of the names he's unsure of before each series in order to round out his professionalism...caught the first BSU vs. UMD game last year and listening to him talking to himself for the entire game trying to get "Zuzana Tomcikova" right was a riot...I thought he was in pain...just sayin')

I think you are giving him far too much credit. For the number of years he has been doing this, and the fact that being a sports anchor is his chosen profession, his broadcasts sound like the work of an amateur. Pronouncing names should be easy. When picking up an unfamiliar line chart, spend a minute going over it with the SID. Although admittedly, Doug Woog never learned to say "Wendell" right, and he had a play-by-play guy saying it right next to him.

So UMD at UM -- anyone coming to Minneapolis this weekend? I know dhmn will boycott to protest the lousy sight lines. :D

Even though I don't know how long he has been doing this I have gotten the impression that it is quite a while and that it is his chosen profession and I agree that there are times when he does sound amateurish but my comment was meant in a relative sense...meaning relative to the others I've heard...eg: watched a Niagara game and (even though this may have been an exception, I certainly hope it was for Niagara fans' sake) the commentator sounded like a student who didn't know much and his colour commentator was a female student who seemed to have some hockey background but had no clue as to the names of most of the players on the opposing team...the goalie was more often than not referred to as "the goalie", as in "that was a good stop by the goalie", and many of the skaters were just referred to by their jersey number...in an MSU game the commentator seemed somewhat knowledgeable but was constantly bad mouthing players with derogatory remarks throughout the entire game...and I mean MSU players...I couldn't believe some of the things that he was saying...some quite personal.

Although my experience in this matter is far from vast, I think the most professional I've heard is the guy (I don't know his name) who does coverage with Laura Halldorson. She is obviously knowledgeable and her comments consequently add interest to the game but she always seems too reserved and up tight for my taste...it doesn't exactly flow naturally and often feels and sounds awkward to me, as though she is constantly thinking/worried about which words to use to express herself in order not to offend anyone...I prefer the relaxed natural flow of Hansen's commentary...but maybe that comes from her years in a profession where political correctness for most, I would imagine, is an overriding concern...then again, maybe it's just her personality.

At any rate, since these services aren't costing a ton of money I'm not sure what level of commentating we can realistically expect.

Brian Schulz. I think most of the fans on this site, while we don't agree on much, would agree that if we have to follow a game on-line rather than watching it live, please let it be Mr. Schulz providing the play-by-play. And even though he has been calling games for a decade, it is a sidelight, not his main career. He puts the time and effort into making his broadcast entertaining and accurate. Maybe the difference is that he is a fan of the game like the rest of us, while a lot of people are directed to cover the women's game and have no interest beyond that.

So that is the standard to which I hold Tom Hansen, rather than that established by students, some who act like the whole thing is a joke. I agree that a few I've heard are offensive.

My focus in my last post was on commentators that (at least in my experience) work their home team's games. If that focus were to be broadened then I would agree with you completely...Brian Schulz is superb, especially considering that it is not his principal occupation. I've also found him to be quite willing to offer assistance/advice on technical matters/problems.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I completely agree that Brian Shulz is the cream of the crop in terms of announcing women's games. And ARM is right on . . . Brain's a fan of the game and as such cares about it - hence he does his preperatation home work. Also, he's got a knack, a natural ability for it.

On the other hand . . . though I think Tom Hansen is a fan of women's hockey he's NOT a natural - and all the preperation in the world would not make it so. Tom Hansen is another Sid Hartman - phonics is a complete mystery to them!! No, names in general. (Sorry for all the non Twin Citians who don't know Sid.) Me, I'm just grateful the UMD women are on the radio. I don't have internet at home and for me, it's the only show in town.

ARM - I can't make it this weekend but wish I could. It would be really fun to see these two young, teams battle it out. No outcome would surprise me. Just off the top I'd say MN will sweep because they have superior goal tending. But, as usual it could go in any direction. As I said in an earlier post, if UMD works hard and skates with authority they can stick with anyone. If they started standing around . . . well, if MN is skating they'll hammer 'em.

Should be fun. Hope to read a few unbiased (as possible ;) ) reports!!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Hey everyone-- been lurking here for a couple of years now so I finally decided to get an account.

I'm headed to the cities for work this weekend, anyone hitting up the game? I've only been to Ridder once, for playoff action, so I'm curious to sit among like minded people and possibly raise a little hell. Especially if the Dynamic Duo of Team Lick shows up. Gawd those guys were awful last week.

Anyway, thanks for the commentary, it's helped me learn the sport more. I'm excited and nervous for this weekend series. With Harrs saying that she was surprised at the rough play towards goalies/ people rushing the net (or something to that effect) in her first few games here-- I'm hoping she's ready for some goon action. That seems to be the UM way-- or has been in the past.

My first thought was that binnyrus or dhmn signed up for a second account just for provocation purposes.;) Rest assured that in the first ten years of this rivalry, the identity of the goon and the offended party has varied depending on the emblem that accompanies the maroon & gold worn by the observer.

Tom Hansen, while he's done more women's hockey broadcasts in 10+ years than anyone.. is still a bumbling moron at times, whether it's names or filling time. He desperately needs a color commentator to keep him from rambling but being women's hockey, and the fact that UMD doesn't have the extra player or goaltender to bring to games, he has noone to help him. A few years ago he had it good, with the extra player or an injured player who could put on a headset and at least give him someone to talk to.

I haven't been to Ridder in 6 years now.. and still haven't managed to get to a UMD game/series down there.. I do have plans to at least watch the Frozen 4 this year but being nearly 6 months away plans can change.

I stick to one ID here :)

As for 'goon' etc.. I think it's shown.. the better the two teams are, just as with Team USA/Canada the more physical the game evolves into. The teams with the actual 'goon' seem to have worn black/red or green/black more often than not. There's been emotion at times obviously, but not the obvious player out that looks like she's actually trying to put people on their butts rather than play hockey. I think Sammi Bowers has two years of eligibility left by the way.....

I always have and always will give and take hits as binnyrus. If it wasn't such an intense rivalry with an unliked foe, it could be fun (like Wisconsin) . . . but being as it's Dogs and Goofs . . . . As I said, I hope the Dogs win, rough 'em up a bit while they're at it, and come out with 4 points. BUT . . . anything can and will happen. Hopefully no one from either side gets hurt in the process.

Any word on Tara Gray's availability??

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Ok ok, so I was just poking a little at the Gophers. I mostly respect them and they seem to have a solid group this year. And yes, dhmn, you're right. The true goons have usually been wearing Red/Black or Green/Black. I'll give you that.

I'm still making anti-goophers shirts though. Who wants in?

You sure earned your red status fast!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Jeeze guys. I thought my earlier comments on the Gophers were lighthearted. I'm new to the group and just wanted to goof around a little and given that this is a UMD thread, thought it would be received as such. But this whole rating the comment business and members getting down on me right off the bat? Well, I'm happy to go back to reading and not participating if I'm not smart enough of cool enough to be in your club. Uh, it's supposed to be fun.

Yeah, I have been watching games and not just lurking. I've been watching games since before UMD went NCAA when I played CLUB hockey at UMD with some of the original members of the first team.

Thank you, however, to the gopher fan who appreciated and read clearly, my intent.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Yes, Katie Gilderman played for PHM, and is an actual goaltender so she can actually skate, though she didn't play in PHM's section semi or section final last year.. she had knee surgery sometime before last season so I don't know exactly how much she did play. I do know she played softball pretty well this past spring though.
