Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Interesting note from tonight.. Kacy Ambroz dressed at the backup goaltender..not sure if or when she's ever been in net before nor where Lana Steck was tonight.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Tried to catch some of Hirsch's play after reading her inspiring story a few weeks ago but B2 was up to its old ways...audio was cutting in and out and then the video froze for maybe 10 minutes or more...terribly unreliable service.

Any news on what happened to Steck? Hansen said she got injured in the pre-game warm up and didn't dress but he didn't know the nature of the injury.

Ambroz dressed in her place to prevent UMD from getting a minor for not dressing 2 goalies. He was laughing during the post game handshakes saying she could hardly skate with the goalie skates she had on and that she was leaning forward just to prevent herself from falling. Regardless, it takes guts to do that...unless it was an "order" from Miller and Ambroz didn't volunteer.

Binnyrus and I were having this very conversation earlier this year when I asked what would happen if... and Binnyrus's answer was a skater dresses...and thus ever it was.

Some good photos.

Years ago, UMD took such a penalty for only dressing one goaltender, I tried to find which game that was but gave up before finding it..

Some of us noticed that Harss was the only goaltender warming up and never knew or saw what happened other than seeing Ambroz in the goalie pads. I believe Ambroz wasn't slated to even dress tonight, didn't actually see her in warmups that I can remember.

As for the photos, I mentioned it before, the DECC is a hard place to get even light when shooting fast enough to stop most of the action, because the really old lights cycle even though we can't actually see it with our own eyes. The best way is with the strobes in the arena but those aren't available to us peons! :D

Four Nations weekend of 2000 UMD came to Minneapolis w/o their Swedes/Finns meaning no Puputti. Backup goalie played, no other goalie or extra skaters to dress in pads, so they were assessed a minor to start both games of the series.

I wonder if the rule would apply if the goaltender was in fact injured in the pregame. IMO, that would qualify as an unforseen emergency, as much as getting injured and having to leave the rink 10 seconds into the game would.

Puputti was the one thing we were sure of about the original situation, but remembering who/what/why/where/when ..all the details, were lost.. of course now that the memory is jogged http://collegehockeystats.net/0001/boxes/wminmnd1.n10

I would hope that actually being in the warmups counts as the fact that a player dressed for the game.... but I've been saying since recruits were announced we really needed a 3rd goaltender on the roster and it's already become a problem 3 games in.. hopefully it's nothing major, I wasn't watching the pregame for one of the rare times so I didn't see anything.. usually I actually watch the entire pregame THEN spend the next 15 minutes in 'BS' mode.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Great weekend for the Bulldogs! Not bad starting off with a sweep...lets carry the momentum into next weeks series!!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

UMD had Saara Tuominen on the ice when Caitlin Hogan was today and managed to get Jenny Harss her first career shutout in the 2-0 UMD win. This game was one of the better UMD/SCSU games I can remember with both teams having chances, and though I could post about the zebra brothers (Licks) I will attempt to refrain because it was just as bad on both sides of the ice.

I had really expected the Huskies to come in and take two points from UMD, but UMD's team defense stepped up big this afternoon. Harss looked more comfortable in net than the previous 3 games as well, but still has some work to do between dropping to the butterfly every chance she gets and getting rebounds away from the net. She was better in moving across the crease than previous games as well.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I would have to agree with dhmn, Harss looked much better today and the defense stepped up huge....blocking shots and clearing the rebounds....Hopefully Steck is back quickly

Shannon is quoted as putting word out on campus looking for a student who's played high school hockey who can come in and suit up. Hopefully there's someone willing to be Harss' backup and who knows, maybe join the team for the season as the third goaltender and have a good experience they never expected.

Neither Justine Fisher nor Kacy Ambroz can skate with the flat blades, which was obvious.. Fisher basically held onto the goalie leg pads to maneuver herself off the ice after the stick salute, in which she was assisted to center ice.

Now she's actually looking for "fringe" players?

Just someone to fill the injury hole.. after all the years of 3 goaltenders.. having only 2 has backfired in only the 2nd weekend of the season!

I heard Steck should be good to go in a couple of weeks...apparently happened in the locker room during a warm up drill...seems to me that someone posted about something similar happening to Demeule (foot/ankle) last year in the locker room just before a game.

Apart from that injury, it was nice to see the other local girls who played in the series did well (Fridfinnson, Wilson, VanDenakker). VanDenakker was actually able to withstand the 'Dogs' onslaught substantially better than the pronunciation of her name did at the hands of Tom Hansen, despite his good intentions.

Yep.. pretty much the same story as when it happened to Karine, though it was 2 or3 years ago, though after hearing that it happened again I didn't really want to post it here :) Probably time to give up the pregame locker room dancing.

When you say local girls you mean Manitoba obviously, for those who might think the post defined local as Duluth.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I was very pleasantly surprised to see the improvement from the opener against RMU and this weeks WCHA opener against SCSU. I really liked the speed and effort shown in three periods each night. Still plenty of mistakes and missed opportunities. But, from the fan perspective one cannot help but be excited by the potential. How many passes just missed? This is a great sign so early in the season. As they practice and lines truly formulate I'd expect that those just missed passes will turn into goals rather quickly.

Has UMD ever had a talent like Jessica Wong - so much raw skill it's frightening. Once her linemates realize that a pass can come at any time from any place (including her back to you!) they'll be ready and great things will follow. When was the last time UMD had a freshman that works as hard as Katie Wilson?? (Naomi Marin?? Jessica Koizumi?)

There's just not a downside to ANY of the freshman. I'm so ****ed impressed with this group.

This team seems to be devloping a real "heart" that could take them a long, long way. I still expect that there will be nights when we all scratch our heads and say "what was that?" But they could be few and far in between . . . especially if they continue to work as hard as they did against St. Cloud.

GO DOGS!!!!!!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I'll agree on Wong.. she'll have the most obvious instant impact of most any freshman in the WCHA if not the NCAA. It's hard to find anything to really critique about the the most skilled freshman we've had overall in a long time.. a different type of skill and hockey sense than Hailey Irwin brings to the game but similar scoring knack. Wong is the complete game.

Thibault though.. she needs to learn to use her incredible speed and be in control of it to use it as a weapon. So far the only impact I see her making is on the penalty kill.. but when she learns to be under control on the offensive end she'll be a Blais type player for sure.

Gina Dodge centering the #2 powerplay line.. she has to know she's not in high school and can't make blind behind the back passes. It didn't bite her Sunday but stuff like that will if she makes a habit of it. It's not all bad though as she is winning a huge percentage of faceoffs (and taking important ones) so she's already making a huge contribution in a positive way.

Cournoyer and Posa I'm kind of neutral about right now... I need to pay more attention to them when the team gets home for the series after the Goofs.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Katie (or Katherine for some people I guess) Wilson is the 'blue collar' type player who I'm sure would do anything asked of her...Binny mentioned her but I missed that and think her hard work will make her a really good 2 way player for UMD.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I would have to agree about the freshman this year....they appear to be a talented group of players for sure, and as they learn to gel with each other i believe we can expect some great games this year.....along with some great leadership from our captains, this should be a good year.....looking forward to watching them play in person!!
