Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

It happened again.. UMD gave up TWO short-handed goals tonight.. *9* seconds apart.. and also THREE powerplay goals... to lose 5-2, after actually being ahead 2-0. Emmanuelle Blais was on the ice for all 5 goals given up and Jamie Rasmussen was on for 4 of the goals, and Tara Gray for 3.. Not good to let down after getting a 2-0 lead against one of the best teams in the country.

The second shorthanded goal was not really UMD's fault. The puck had a crazy bounce off the boards near the corner and came out right in front of the goal. All Mercyhurst had to do was tap the puck in as the goalie was going to play it behind the goal.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

This weekend's series was a Manitoba talent fest...with Palmer transfering to MC from Vermont there were 6 "local" players on the ice, Palmer, Bram, Corbett, Fridfinsson, Wilson and Murray (not including Steck & J-Rock who were absent). Great to see their careers unfold and the different paths that peoples' lives take.

Bram, Palmer, Steck and Wilson were all teammates in early '07 on Team Manitoba, winning a Silver Medal at the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon. Great to see their paths cross again even if it is on opposite sides of center ice.

There were other players in this weekend's series who also participated in the CWG in Whitehorse. Very interesting concepts, time and space are.

Fridfinsson was dragging her shoulder around the rink in both games and still racking up points...it doesn't look good...I have to think that she wouldn't be playing if the bench wasn't so short.

So, if MC is the second most penalized team in D1...who is the first?...UND?

The Lakers are #1 in penalty minutes per game. In terms of total penalty minutes, look closer to home, because right now, it is UMD.
<pre>Penalty Minutes: Games PIM PIM/G
1 Mercyhurst 8 152 19.0
2 North Dakota 8 148 18.5
3 Minnesota Duluth 10 158 15.8
4 Rensselaer 9 131 14.6
5 Vermont 7 100 14.3
6 Bemidji State 10 141 14.1
7 Minnesota 9 125 13.9
8 St. Cloud State 8 107 13.4
9 Yale 3 40 13.3
10 Minnesota State 5 64 12.8

Thanks for the info...I meant prior to this weekend's action that MC was apparently the second most penalized team...but I guess it doesn't matter much since they're just jockeying for the #1 spot with UND.

But I'm a bit surprised that UMD is that close to the top...that distinction being assisted in the extreme by the last series vs UND.

Minnesota, UMD, and Mercyhurst finished 1, 2, 3 last season, so maybe it isn't a big surprise that all three are up there again.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

UMD would be the most penalized if they had their size players, Irwin and Holmlov. Those two accounted for 196 minutes in penalties between them.

I had to be told that UMD won more than once tonight to be sure that it was true... Next up is St. Cloud, minus Tuominen and Posa as mentioned a few times. While it's really good to beat the #1 team, winning at St. Cloud is equally as important, to keep Minnesota in their sights... having a good weekend without those two will also make the Olympics a little more liveable if they can play without Tuominen and Posa.. even though that's only 1 weekend *THIS* time.

Moving Justine Fisher to D might turn out to be a really good move.. she's not the fastest player on any team, and if she can pick up the idea and learn the position it would give UMD 6 D and allow Rasmussen, Posa, Gray an extra shift off maybe. It's not like Fisher was seeing the ice as a forward so if it works it's a great decision. She was even a +1 in +/- today while on the ice with Kirsti Hakala (who got an assist (her second NCAA D1 point) on the opening goal.)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

well....friday's game was a bit of a mess...never being able to play full strength really hurt us.......but yesterdays game was a display of heart and talent combined...i am very proud of the Bulldog's and the effort they gave...if we can cut down our penalties...it will help us tremendously......

Not sure i agree with Fisher being moved back to D ,but then again...i dont claim to be a couch coach either...... :)

Of the 3 players we've got that don't get a lot of ice time.. she's be the best candidate for it, and it is required with Posa being gone.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I'd say the split is an EXCELLENT outcome for our team!! I'm just thrilled they showed some resiliency - it's the kind of win that bodes well for later in the season. That is, they're learning how to win; learning what it takes mentally and physcially to work through the normal ups and downs.

Also bodes well for the WCHA . . .

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I also noticed another commitment from that thread: Dana Gallop from Grand Rapids HS. Wouldn't it be just great if UMD regularly started getting a few more of the top D-1 prospects from the local area??

Gallop is a pre-season Ms. Hockey finalist for people who have those thoughts during the pre-season.

Unfortunately, Courtney Esse (CEC of course) seems to have been passed up by Coach Miller.. I think if we could have her coming in it would open the door for the other couple D1 prospects in the near future, including Esse's sister Carly (sp), a smart defenseman with decent size, who still has 3 or 4 years of high school hockey. Jessie Ryan's (Junior this year) another defenseman who'll be able to make a quick impact, she has the offensive skill set (and MORE speed) that Michelle Maunu had in high school, but also can play defense when she needs to.

PHM (Proctor/Hermantown/Marshall) has at least a couple more really good players besides Julia Gilbert also, but they don't have their roster online yet so I am forgetting all their names other than Anja Morris, the goaltender (a Sophomore or Junior this coming season) who played in place of Katie Gilderman's injury last season and brought them to the section final against our CEC team.

After all that this looks like the high school thread.. oops :D I know I left out other schools but without rosters online it's hard to remember other schools' player names before the actual season starts.

Yes, it would...as long as the staff doesn't get carried away and start grabbing all the locals. Dana Gallop is a fine catch for the Bulldogs...and I'm very glad to see UMD recruit her. I dunno...I may have to find another team to hate. I already have one in mind.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

The numbers of highly skilled players still isn't great enough to consistently win with all locals (by locals..Duluth/Range areas) but there have been SOME standouts who were obviously missed or not tried for by UMD. For every area player we do get you have to hope it opens the door for the next player from that school to look at UMD when being recruited but that doesn't seem to work that way other than the Europeans and that's changing some now too.

-- Off topic sort of but anyway --

I don't think attendance will improve that much even WITH more locals either, I believe the people who complain online about all of the non local kids complain to see their posts online and wouldn't support the local girls anyway since they don't what we already have! I hate to think where UMD would be if we hadn't had the international players that we have had... with Bemidji and NoDak in the standings?(OK, off the 'soap box')

We'd welcome such a change with open arms!!! The Dark Side isn't as bad as it's been made out to be . . . ;)

I think virtually every UMD fan has wished for more "local" players - from the very beginning. Heck, I cheer for whoever wears the UMD Bulldog, but you can always tell that the fans are well aware of the local gals . . . as they get a bit of extra in every cheer.

I agree with dhmn too though . . . people either are or are not fans of the women's game. Those who say they'd show if there were more Americans, or more Minnesotans, or more . . .???? aren't being honest. They'd be there this season if they were.

I don't think UMD has any more of a "Minnesotan flavor" this year than they did last. Last season they had Ellison, Mattila, and Olson, all of whom played regularly, that are now gone. The Minnesotans they've added are a 5th D and players who are in that 3rd/4th line mix. I don't think they provide the draw that Ellison alone should have had last year.

Anyway, the signs are positive, because the Bulldogs now seem to be making some effort to recruit Minnesota players beyond the kids that they can get for scant scholarship dollars.
